Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Keep layouts in Scene Collections and stream settings in Profiles; they solve different organization problems.
Plan scenes around moments in your stream
A scene is a layout in OBS, not a separate YouTube broadcast. Switch scenes to change what viewers see during the same stream. For a gaming broadcast, a practical starting set might be:
- Starting: a welcome screen while you get ready.
- Gameplay: game capture, camera, and any relevant overlays.
- Discussion: a larger camera view with chat or other supporting elements.
- Break: a holding screen for short pauses.
- Ending: a closing screen for the end of the broadcast.
Use only scenes that serve a real moment in your show. OBS notes that large or complex scene collections can affect responsiveness, and sources may use system resources even while hidden. Keep costly sources and unnecessary browser overlays to a minimum.
Build each scene from sources
In the Scenes dock, add and name a scene. Then add its visual and audio elements from the Sources dock. Depending on the layout, these can include game or window capture, a camera or capture card, images, text, browser overlays, and media sources.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Add the scene: create a separate scene for each distinct layout and give it a name you can recognize quickly while live.
- Add sources: select the scene, add the required capture or media sources, and configure each one.
- Arrange the layers: sources higher in the Sources list appear above sources below them. Drag sources to change their order; use the eye control to show or hide a source.
- Position the layout: select a source in the preview and drag or resize it until it is placed correctly. Check that overlays do not obscure important game content.
- Review names: OBS uses globally named scenes and sources in its interface, so avoid giving a source the same name as a scene.
For details on adding and arranging source types, see the OBS Sources Guide.
Switch scenes without exposing unfinished changes
Use Studio Mode to prepare the next view
Studio Mode separates the current live output from the scene you are editing. Viewers see the live side; you can select and adjust a different scene on the edit side, then use Transition to put it on air. OBS explains that Studio Mode lets you change scenes in the background without viewers seeing those changes. The risk is taking an unfinished preview live, not enabling Studio Mode itself.
- Enable Studio Mode in OBS.
- Select the scene to prepare on the edit/preview side.
- Check the composition and sources there, including overlays and camera framing.
- When ready, select Transition or use a configured Quick Transition or hotkey.
If a scene is already fully prepared and you do not need to adjust it first, selecting it directly may be simpler. For a scene that needs last-minute changes, Studio Mode provides a separate preparation view.

Choose a transition and duration
OBS makes Cut and Fade available at first launch. Other listed options include Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe. Select the active transition and set its duration to suit the pace of your program. A cut can suit a quick change; a fade or other effect can make a more gradual change. There is no universally best transition: choose one that fits the show and test it before going live.

| OBS feature | What it saves | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Scene Collection | Scenes and their sources, including Global Audio Sources configured under Settings → Audio. | Keep different production formats separate—for example, a gaming layout, a podcast layout, or a recording-only arrangement. |
| Profile | Settings such as stream, video, and output settings; it does not store scenes. | Keep different output or streaming configurations organized without treating a Profile as a scene backup. |
Switch Scene Collections when you need another set of layouts and sources. Switch Profiles when you need another set of settings for streaming or output. Because they hold different things, neither alone is a complete backup of every OBS configuration. See the OBS guides to Scene Collections and Profiles.
Connect OBS to a YouTube stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for productions such as gameplay or screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, and multi-camera or multi-microphone setups. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and use the server URL and stream key provided for the encoder. If OBS does not offer a direct YouTube selection in the connection workflow, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding encoder settings in OBS.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not show it in a screen capture or publish it; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Start a short test stream or recording before the actual broadcast, and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Requirements and interface labels can change, so consult YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions when configuring the stream.

Run a pre-stream scene check
OBS strongly encourages a short test recording or stream. Before inviting viewers, run through the whole scene-switching chain:
- Confirm the game, window, camera, and other intended captures appear in their scenes.
- Check that overlays and text are readable and positioned correctly.
- Watch audio meters while speaking and while game audio is playing.
- In Studio Mode, confirm the preview is the scene you intend to transition to, then test the transition.
- Check that the stream preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before you start the public broadcast.
- Make sure the stream key is not visible in any scene, capture, or shared screen.
The OBS Quick Start Guide covers the initial setup and test-stream approach.
Troubleshoot common scene problems
The wrong scene appears to viewers
With Studio Mode enabled, the edit/preview scene is not necessarily the live scene. Check which side is live, select the intended preview, and use Transition when it is ready.

A source is covered or missing
Check the Sources list: an item higher in the list appears above items beneath it. Confirm its eye control is on, then reposition or resize it in the preview if needed.
OBS becomes less responsive with many scenes or overlays
Large or complex collections and resource-intensive sources can affect responsiveness; hiding a source does not necessarily stop it using resources. Remove unnecessary sources, limit expensive browser sources, or separate different show formats into focused Scene Collections. OBS also provides an encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
YouTube does not show an incoming stream
Confirm you selected the intended YouTube stream and copied its matching server URL and stream key into OBS. Check the key privately for copying errors and verify the connection in Live Control Room. If live streaming is being enabled for the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS gives you flexible scene switching for a live, interactive production. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
