Choose StreamYard On-Air if your training needs webinar registration, a browser-based viewing page and a straightforward way to bring in guests. Choose OBS Studio if you want hands-on control over scenes, sources, audio and output—and are prepared to configure and rehearse the setup. Both can handle a screen-led lesson with a camera and microphone; the better fit depends on the session workflow, not on a proven difference in learning outcomes.

What each tool is built to do
StreamYard: a browser-based studio and webinar workflow
StreamYard is a browser-based live production and recording studio. Its On-Air feature adds webinar operations: registration, an embeddable webinar, browser viewing without downloads, live chat and optional on-demand access. The On-Air help guide says the feature starts with the Advanced plan, and viewer limits depend on the plan. Check the current plan details before scheduling for a specific audience size. See StreamYard’s On-Air guide.
On-Air does not include built-in admission payments. For paid training, you need an external paywall or another way to handle payment and access. That adds a separate step to the learner journey, so test how attendees receive the webinar link after registering or paying.
OBS: configurable desktop production
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming. It can capture a display or window, webcam and other sources, then combine them in scenes with audio mixing, filters, transitions, hotkeys and Studio Mode. It also supports plugins and scripts. That flexibility is useful when your lesson needs a carefully composed layout or specific production controls, but you are responsible for configuring and operating them. OBS Studio features.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Screen sharing, guests and attendee access
Screen-led lessons
For a lesson built around slides or a software demonstration, either product can combine screen content with a camera and microphone. OBS supports display and window capture alongside webcam and audio-device sources; StreamYard’s onboarding covers slides and camera/microphone setup. Decide whether you value custom desktop production more than an integrated browser-based studio, and test the exact screen-sharing route you plan to teach with. OBS Quick Start Guide · StreamYard First Steps.
Guest instructors
StreamYard is the more natural starting point when you want guests to join through a browser-based studio rather than install production software. Before class, have each guest check browser camera and microphone permissions, select the intended devices and join from the kind of connection they will use on the day. The browser workflow reduces installation steps; it does not remove the need to test a guest’s actual setup.

Registration and paid access
If attendees should register and watch in an embedded or browser-based webinar experience, On-Air is the closer fit. Its built-in registration is not the same as paid admission: set up a separate payment and access-control arrangement for a paid course, and verify that it delivers the right viewing link to purchasers. OBS is production software, so plan separately for registration, attendee communications and viewing access.
Setup effort and rehearsal
Preparing OBS
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS says the wizard considers intended use, computer resources and, for streaming, network conditions. Treat its result as a starting point rather than proof that the full training setup will work.
- Add and arrange sources. Set up the display or window, camera and audio devices needed for the session; build and check the scenes you will switch between.
- Review output and audio. Confirm the recording or streaming destination and output settings, then check that the microphone and shared content are audible or visible as intended.
- Rehearse the actual session. Make a short test recording or stream using the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity. OBS specifically recommends testing before a real session. OBS Quick Start Guide
Meeting OBS’s stated system requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can record or stream at your chosen settings. Capacity depends on the settings, encoder, frame rate and complexity of your scenes. OBS System Requirements.

Preparing StreamYard
- Check camera and microphone permissions and select the intended devices.
- Test the host’s network, slide sharing and any guests’ browser connections.
- Confirm recording settings and the attendee route, including the webinar page or embed learners will use.
- Do a complete run-through with the people and equipment expected on training day. StreamYard First Steps
Test the learner’s view, not just the host’s
Rehearse screen changes, microphone levels, guest handoffs, recording and late arrival from the attendee’s perspective. Keep the slide deck and session link available to the instructor, and prepare a backup way to communicate with attendees if the live route fails. Neither product choice by itself guarantees that a class will run successfully.
Recordings, replay and plan limits
StreamYard On-Air can enable on-demand viewing and a downloadable recording. StreamYard’s paid-feature guide says eligible paid plans record broadcasts in HD up to 10 hours per stream; recording features and limits vary by plan and may change. Check the current feature guide and plan details for the specific account before relying on a limit. Paid-plan feature guide.

Cost: free software or a webinar plan?
| Option | What the documented cost information establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | The OBS Help Portal describes OBS as free for any use, including commercial use, under GPLv2, with no watermarks or usage limits. OBS Help Portal | Your costs may include the computer and production workflow you choose; the software itself is free. |
| StreamYard | There are free and paid plans; On-Air starts with Advanced, according to the webinar help guide. On-Air guide | Check the live pricing page for current price, viewer limit, recording features and renewal or offer terms. Plans & Pricing |
For a fair cost comparison, compare what your actual training needs: attendee capacity, registration, replay, recording, guest participation and any separate payment/access setup. Do not treat a displayed campaign price as a fixed long-term cost.
Troubleshooting before or during a class
- The OBS preview stutters or recording fails: reduce the production demands and test again. A computer’s compatibility does not guarantee it can handle the chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity together. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then rehearse the actual configuration. OBS System Requirements
- A screen, camera or microphone is missing in OBS: verify that the correct source or device is selected and that the scene contains the source you intend to use; test a short recording before attendees arrive. OBS Quick Start Guide
- A StreamYard guest cannot be seen or heard: check browser camera/microphone permissions, selected devices and network conditions with the guest before the session. StreamYard First Steps
- Attendees cannot access a StreamYard webinar: test registration and the attendee viewing route in advance, and confirm the current plan’s viewer limit. For paid training, verify the separate payment-to-access handoff; On-Air does not process admission payments itself. On-Air guide
- The recording or replay is unavailable or shorter than expected: check the account’s current plan and recording limits, then verify the recording workflow in a rehearsal. StreamYard’s paid-feature details are plan-dependent. Paid-plan feature guide
Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not
StreamNeo is not a replacement for StreamYard or OBS when you are presenting a live class from a camera, inviting a guest into a live conversation, or taking questions in real time. It serves a different need: keeping an already-recorded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel continuously. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so a computer, OBS and a home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream built from pre-recorded material rather than a scheduled instructor-led class, see StreamNeo and start the free first day.
