A low-cost Indian VPS can keep a pre-recorded video streaming to YouTube around the clock, but the cheapest headline plan is not necessarily the cheapest workable option. Choose the stream settings first, then check whether your VPS can handle the actual media workload and how much outbound data its plan includes. If you use a compatible, already-encoded file, the server may be able to relay it without continuous video encoding; transcoding requires more CPU and must be tested on the VPS you intend to use.
What you need to decide before renting a VPS
There is no established universal cheapest VPS for this job. A suitable plan depends on your target resolution and frame rate, whether you are forwarding or encoding video, the VPS region and network route to YouTube, and the provider’s outbound-transfer allowance and rules for sustained traffic.
Use this checklist to compare plans rather than relying on a low monthly sticker price:
- Region and route: Check whether the provider offers an Indian region that suits your audience and whether its network can sustain a connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A server’s location alone does not establish stream stability.
- Outbound transfer: Find the included monthly transfer, how it is measured, any overage price, and whether continuous streaming is permitted under the provider’s terms.
- Workload: Determine whether the VPS will relay a compatible, already-encoded file or continuously encode/transcode it. Do not infer real-time video-encoding performance from a vCPU count alone.
- All-in cost: Check taxes, optional IPv4 charges, renewal pricing, overages, storage, and any limits that apply to sustained outbound streaming.
- Administration: A self-managed VPS means handling the operating system, FFmpeg setup, process supervision, monitoring, and recovery yourself.
Current provider prices, transfer terms, and performance are not established here, so verify them on each provider’s own plan and terms pages before paying. Test a representative stream on the exact plan rather than treating a plan label or generic VPS specification as proof of suitability.

Choose YouTube-compatible stream settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can sustain and testing the upload bitrate. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or network stability. The values are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate. If your source already has suitable video and audio encoding, preserve those settings where your workflow allows; unnecessary transcoding increases the VPS workload. Confirm that the resulting stream matches YouTube’s guidance and monitor stream health rather than assuming the source file’s settings will work unchanged.

Estimate monthly outbound data
Video and audio both use transfer. For a rough estimate, add their bitrates, multiply by the hours you will stream, and convert bits to bytes. At a sustained 1 Mbps, streaming for 30 days uses about 324 GB decimal: 1,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is arithmetic for planning, not a provider allowance, and excludes protocol overhead. Add a buffer before comparing the estimate with a plan’s included outbound transfer.
For example, the recommended 1080p30 H.264 video bitrate is 14 Mbps before adding audio. A 24/7 stream at that video bitrate alone would therefore require substantially more than the 1 Mbps example; calculate using the combined bitrate of your actual stream. Confirm whether the provider’s quoted transfer is outbound, whether it resets monthly, and what happens if you exceed it. An overage or a restrictive cap can erase the apparent savings of a low-cost plan.

Set up and test the stream
The exact commands and controls depend on your source file, VPS operating system, FFmpeg build, and whether you are copying or encoding the media. Do not use a generic command as if it were safe for every codec and file. The reliable sequence is to verify those details, configure a single YouTube ingest route, and test the full workload before leaving it unattended.
- Set the target: Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, audio format, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the target.
- Inspect the source and workload: Establish whether the file’s codecs and properties are compatible with your planned ingest. Decide whether your workflow can copy/remux the encoded streams or must re-encode them. Test the actual file, filters, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings on the VPS; watch CPU use and stream health during the test.
- Create a YouTube live stream and obtain its stream key: In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream key as the encoder’s credential. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, logs, or public repositories. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest option when configuring your encoder.
- Configure one ingest route: Use RTMP or RTMPS as appropriate for your encoder configuration. Do not mix RTMP and DASH ingestion during a broadcast or use them together as primary and backup ingestion methods. YouTube’s DASH ingestion guide describes implementation requirements for encoder developers; its manifest and segment rules are not a checklist for ordinary RTMP(S) use.
- Run a representative private or otherwise appropriate test: Include audio and motion similar to the planned stream. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check both the encoder’s output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before relying on a continuous run.
- Arrange supervision and recovery: A 24/7 process needs monitoring and a way to restart after a process or connection failure. Check YouTube stream health and encoder messages during testing, and decide how you will detect a stopped process or dropped connection. Test the recovery path rather than assuming a VPS will restore a broadcast automatically.
Copyright and continuous-play considerations
Having a file on a VPS does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use video, music, artwork, and other material you own or are licensed to stream, and check the terms of any licence for continuous live use. YouTube may detect copyrighted material in a live stream; a technically healthy encoder does not settle whether the content is permitted. Review YouTube’s applicable policies for your channel and content before starting a 24/7 broadcast.

Also distinguish a working stream from a channel that is eligible for monetization: continuous playback or repeated material does not by itself establish compliance with YouTube’s channel monetization requirements. Check the current policy and the rights and originality of the material you plan to use.

The key distinction is forwarding versus encoding. A compatible pre-encoded file may be sent without re-encoding, depending on its format and the chosen workflow. Continuous encoding or transcoding adds CPU demand, and advertised vCPU counts do not prove that a plan can encode your particular video in real time. A VPS that works for a simple relay may fail when asked to resize, filter, or re-encode the same source.

Compare the full cost and test conditions together: compute and storage for the workload, outbound transfer and overage, taxes, IPv4, renewal terms, server region, and the provider’s rules for sustained outbound traffic. No provider-specific winner or price can be established without current plan terms and a representative workload test.
