There is no single best OBS preset for every YouTube livestream. Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can render and encode, then set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. For a reliable starting point, use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, SDR Rec. 709 at 8-bit, and YouTube’s current bitrate recommendation for your codec and output. Test with realistic audio and movement before going live.
Start with a reliable baseline
For a typical SDR stream, set the output to the resolution and frame rate your system and connection can handle, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and select a sustainable bitrate from YouTube’s table below. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are starting settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection will deliver a stable stream.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds.
- Audio: stereo at YouTube’s listed 128 kbps baseline.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
- Resolution and frame rate: choose a target that the machine can render and encode and the upload can sustain.
Choose resolution and frame rate
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the composition area for your sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the stream’s outgoing dimensions. Select the common FPS value you intend to deliver. OBS’s overview guide describes these settings and is dated June 9, 2021: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Higher resolution preserves more detail but raises bitrate demand. Higher frame rates make motion look smoother, which can help fast-moving gameplay, but add rendering and encoding work. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS advises trying 30 fps. Reduce output resolution as well if needed rather than insisting on a target your system cannot maintain.

Set YouTube bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate
The following are YouTube’s recommended video ingestion bitrates, in Mbps, on its official live encoder guidance page accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not hard minimums or a promise that your connection can sustain the stream. H.264 targets differ from AV1 and H.265/HEVC targets.
| Output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Source: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The page also publishes minimum ranges; the recommended values above should not be mistaken for universal minimums. If your upload cannot reliably sustain the recommended target, lower the bitrate and, if necessary, reduce resolution or frame rate. A speed-test peak is not proof of sustained capacity during a live event.
What to use for 1080p gaming
For 1080p at 60 fps, YouTube’s recommendation is 17 Mbps with H.264 or 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265. At 30 fps, the corresponding recommendations are 14 Mbps and 10 Mbps. Choose the codec your OBS installation and hardware actually expose; do not assume every PC offers all three. If fast gameplay makes 60 fps too demanding, 1080p30 is a sensible fallback when it produces a more stable stream.

Choose an encoder and configure OBS Output
YouTube’s cited live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Available choices depend on OBS, the operating system, and the encoder hardware or software installed. Hardware encoding often reduces CPU load, but capabilities and results vary by system; it is not automatically the best-quality option in every setup. OBS’s hardware encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022, explains the system-dependent options: Hardware Encoding.

- In the streaming output section, select an available encoder and codec suitable for your stream. If your machine struggles, try a lighter encoder preset or an available hardware encoder, then test actual gameplay.
- Set Rate Control to CBR, set the bitrate to a sustainable target from YouTube’s table, and set the Keyframe Interval to 2 s.
- Apply the settings and run a test stream. Exact labels vary with OBS version and selected encoder.

For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Set the corresponding color options in OBS’s advanced color settings when applicable. HDR is a separate workflow, not a generic quality toggle: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited settings. Connect OBS to your YouTube live stream
OBS needs the stream server and stream key associated with your YouTube broadcast. Use YouTube’s live control room to create or select the intended stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not display it on stream or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before broadcasting again.

Test before the real broadcast
YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual event. A static desktop test may not reveal the load or bitrate variation caused by gameplay, scene changes, and active audio. Check the test on the intended viewing device and confirm the stream health indicators in YouTube’s live control room.
- Verify the received resolution and frame rate match your intended output.
- Listen for missing, distorted, clipped, or out-of-sync audio.
- Use gameplay or other representative motion to check visual quality.
- Watch OBS statistics and YouTube stream-health messages for rendering, encoding, or dropped-frame warnings.
- Test under the network conditions you expect during the event, especially if other people or devices share the upload connection.

OBS reports rendering lag or an overloaded GPU
OBS may be competing with a game or complex scenes for GPU resources. Simplify demanding scenes and reduce output demands. An encoder change alone may not fix a rendering bottleneck, because compositing and encoding are different workloads. OBS covers this in Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
You see dropped frames or unstable ingest
Investigate upload capacity and connection stability. Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain rather than treating a brief speed-test result as guaranteed capacity. If possible, test with a wired connection, but a cable cannot fix an ISP limit, congestion, or a YouTube ingest problem. Lowering the bitrate and reducing resolution or frame rate can make the stream more sustainable. OBS’s guide is Stream Buffering Troubleshooting.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames
Viewer device and network conditions, as well as delivery behavior, may contribute. YouTube transcodes live streams, but that does not guarantee every viewer can smoothly receive a high-bitrate rendition. If broad accessibility matters, consider a lower bitrate or output target and test with viewers on representative connections. OBS discusses buffering symptoms at Stream Buffering Troubleshooting; YouTube’s transcoding overview is Transcodes / Transcoding.
The stream seems stuck at a lower resolution
Check that OBS is sending the intended output resolution and that YouTube’s stream-health status shows the expected ingest. YouTube processing and transcoding behavior can affect what viewers see; the official guidance cited here does not establish an exact propagation delay. Test the stream and check again rather than assuming a fixed wait time.
Save separate profiles for different setups
If you stream from different machines, networks, or gameplay types, save a conservative profile and a higher-demand profile instead of repeatedly changing one configuration. OBS profiles save stream, video, and output settings. In OBS, use Profile → New to create a profile and switch profiles from the same menu. OBS’s profile guide is dated January 14, 2022: Profiles.
