You can broadcast a playlist of local videos to YouTube Live from an old laptop using OBS Studio’s VLC Video source. Install VLC, add the files in order, enable Loop Playlist if you want them to repeat, then connect OBS to your YouTube stream. Whether it runs smoothly depends on the laptop’s operating system, graphics hardware, output settings and internet upload speed—not its age alone.
The setup steps are the same for Indian channels as elsewhere in the sources cited here. Check Live Control Room for your channel’s access, and use only videos you are authorized to stream.
How do I set up a YouTube Live video playlist on an old laptop?
Do the eligibility check first: YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Then test OBS with the actual files and settings you plan to use before scheduling an important broadcast.
- Confirm YouTube Live access. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live and follow any prompts to verify your channel. YouTube lists channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days among its eligibility requirements; its current help page also says creators must be at least 16. Check your own Live Control Room, since these general instructions cannot confirm access for a specific account. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- Check the laptop and install OBS and VLC. Identify the operating system and graphics hardware before building the stream. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as its basic Windows requirements. Those minimums do not guarantee that a particular laptop can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate smoothly; CPU load varies with the encoder, output settings and scene complexity. Install a VLC version that matches OBS: for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist in OBS. Create or open a scene, add a VLC Video source, then select the local video files in the order you want them to play. Turn on Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after the final item. OBS’s VLC source supports multiple files as a playlist; VLC must be installed for this source to work. For one file only, OBS’s Media Source has its own Loop setting. See OBS Media Sources for the source options.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live. Start an immediate stream or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling provides an upcoming watch page that you can share ahead of time.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service if it is available, then connect your account or enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. If you need to replace a key, use the controls in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Click Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming picture to appear in Live Control Room, then check the video, audio and stream health. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go Live in Live Control Room when ready.
- End the broadcast and check the archive. End the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check the channel’s Live tab for the saved stream.

Can I stream a playlist from OBS?
Yes. Add an OBS VLC Video source, choose multiple local files in playback order and enable Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence. OBS describes this source as allowing a playlist of items, unlike the single-file Media Source. Install VLC first, and match its architecture to OBS. If you have just one video to repeat, use Media Source and turn on its Loop option instead.
What settings should I use on an old laptop?
Start with a modest output and test it with representative video motion and audio. YouTube’s published encoder recommendations include 720p at 30 fps with a 2 Mbps video bitrate, and 480p at 30 fps with a 0.3 Mbps video bitrate. These are recommendations, not a promise that an older computer or a particular connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then run a test stream and watch YouTube’s stream health. If video stutters or encoding overload appears, reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify the scene; a playlist scene with only the video source has less going on than one with multiple layered sources. Keep the media files local and available throughout the broadcast.
What internet upload speed do I need for YouTube Live?
Base the connection check on the total outgoing stream bitrate, not download speed alone. YouTube recommends testing the connection and leaving about 20% upload headroom above the total bitrate. For example, a stream sending at 2 Mbps needs a tested upload capacity of about 2.4 Mbps or more under the conditions of the broadcast. Other devices or uploads sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to OBS. YouTube explains this in its streaming tips.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video does not appear in OBS: Install VLC, restart OBS, and check that VLC’s architecture matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS build needs 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after the last video: Open the VLC Video source settings and enable Loop Playlist.
- The stream drops frames or OBS reports encoder overload: Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, check tested upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom. Test with the actual files and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and any live-streaming restrictions. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before the stream is needed.
- The video plays but viewers cannot hear it: Check the source and OBS audio meters during the preview, and confirm the selected audio is reaching the stream before going live.
