To put a webcam or second video over your game or screen in a live broadcast, build the layout in OBS: add both video sources to the same scene, then resize and position the inset above the main image. If you mean a small floating player that stays visible while you use another app, that is viewer-side picture-in-picture, not an inset you add to the broadcast.

Broadcast picture-in-picture vs. a floating player

Broadcast picture-in-picture is part of the video you send to viewers. You compose it in streaming software using at least two sources: a main image and a smaller inset layered over it. Viewers see the same composition wherever they watch.

A floating picture-in-picture player is different: it is a playback feature on a viewer’s device or in a playback app. Android documents PiP as an app-side platform feature; it does not create an inset in your live broadcast.

Add picture-in-picture in OBS

  1. Create or select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene you intend to stream, or create one for the layout.
  2. Add the main image. Add the source for your game, display, window, camera, or other primary video. OBS scenes can combine different source types.
  3. Add the inset video. For a webcam, use Video Capture Device (also described in OBS documentation as a Video Capture Source), then select the camera in its properties. A webcam or capture card recognized by your computer and OBS can supply this video.
  4. Layer and place the inset. Select the second source in the preview canvas and drag it to the desired position; resize it using its handles. Make sure it is above the main source in the source order so it appears over the main image rather than behind it.
  5. Check the composition before going live. Confirm the inset is visible, does not cover important game or screen information, and that the intended audio sources are active. Preview the scene before sending it to your live stream.

OBS controls and button placement can change between releases. The official OBS procedural articles cited for these source workflows were published in 2022, so check the labels in your installed version if they differ.

Choose a source for the inset

Source Best fit What to check
USB webcam A presenter camera as the inset Confirm the computer and OBS recognize the device, then select it in the Video Capture Device properties.
External HDMI camera or device A camera or other video source that outputs HDMI A capture card may be needed to make the signal available to the streaming computer. Check the card’s operating-system support, drivers, and compatible video modes and formats. Compatibility depends on the particular device and setup.
Existing display or window source A second computer image or application view Choose the appropriate screen or window source in OBS; a capture card is not automatically required.
Browser Source A web page or local-file visual element, such as an overlay Browser Source loads a URL or local file into a scene; it is not a physical camera input. OBS documents availability on Windows and macOS and through official packages on Linux.

For some Blackmagic capture devices, OBS documentation notes that the selected mode and format need to match the media and intended output. More generally, verify the resolution and frame-rate formats supported by both the source and capture device rather than assuming every camera mode will work in your setup.

Make the inset readable without hiding the game

  • Place the inset where it avoids important game HUD elements, subtitles, scoreboards, or information your viewers need to see.
  • Size it large enough for the subject to be recognizable, but small enough to preserve the main view. There is no single correct corner or size for every game and layout.
  • Check the result in the OBS preview at the scene’s intended output size. A layout that looks balanced in the editor may obscure content when viewed at a smaller size.
  • Check audio separately from the visual layout. Adding a video source does not by itself establish which microphone or other audio source viewers will hear.

Common setup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The inset is missing behind the main image It is lower in the source order than the main image, or the wrong scene is selected. Move the inset source above the main source and confirm you are previewing the scene you plan to stream.
The webcam does not appear as a source The device may not be available to the computer or OBS, or the wrong capture device was selected. Open the Video Capture Device properties and check the selected device. For an HDMI camera, confirm that the capture card and its drivers are available to your operating system and OBS.
The capture card shows no usable picture The source mode, format, drivers, or platform support may not match the device or output. Check the capture-device documentation and select a supported mode and format. Device compatibility is specific to the hardware and operating system.
A web overlay is blank or the wrong thing appears The Browser Source URL or local file may be incorrect, or a browser source may have been used where a physical camera input was needed. Verify the URL or file in the Browser Source properties. For a camera, add a Video Capture Device instead.
The inset covers important game information Its position or size does not suit that game’s HUD or the content being shown. Move or resize it in the scene preview, then inspect the full composition before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for keeping a YouTube stream of uploaded video running from the cloud; it does not create a live camera picture-in-picture layout or stream live camera input. If you want the inset included, compose it in OBS and upload the resulting recording to StreamNeo. Then upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
