The best live transcription tool depends on what you want viewers—or you—to do with the words. For captions in a Twitch stream, you need a caption source that reaches Twitch; for local transcription inside OBS, LocalVocal is one option; for searching what was said during a YouTube or Twitch stream, LiveScript is built for that different task. There is no independently verified accuracy winner among these options.
Before choosing, decide whether you need captions in the video, a caption track viewers can control, translated captions, or a searchable transcript. Those are different outputs, and a tool that provides one may not provide the others.
Choose the output you need first
“Transcription” can mean several things in a live-stream setup. Match the tool to the job before comparing features:
- Viewer-facing captions: Words appear in or alongside the stream so viewers can follow speech. Confirm that the tool sends captions to your streaming destination in a format it supports.
- Translated captions: Spoken words are rendered in another language. Check which languages are supported and whether the translation appears in the video, in a platform caption control, or on a separate page.
- Searchable live transcript: Text is indexed or displayed so you can find a name, callout, or topic while the stream is happening. This does not necessarily put captions in the outgoing video.
- Local transcription: Audio is processed on your computer rather than sent to a transcription provider’s cloud. This may suit a privacy-conscious workflow, but the model and your machine affect performance.
These categories can overlap, but do not assume they do. In particular, a searchable transcript is not automatically a viewer-facing caption track.

How captions reach viewers
Platform caption controls
Twitch describes caption delivery through caption files embedded in a stream or through broadcast encoders, and recommends an OBS closed-caption plugin as one way to create captions on the fly. When captions are available, viewers can use Twitch’s CC control and adjust caption size, color, and placement. Twitch does not automatically caption every channel simply because it is streamed through OBS. Check Twitch’s current Guide to Closed Captions before configuring a source; the support page’s detailed text may change.
OBS overlays
OBS is a compositor and streaming application, not a speech recognizer. To show recognized speech in an OBS scene, you need a caption plugin, a browser source, or another captured caption view. A text overlay can be styled as part of the scene, but once it is composited into the video it is not a separate caption track viewers can switch off or restyle.
Separate caption feeds
A separate caption page or feed can give viewers controls—such as choosing among configured languages—that a burned-in overlay cannot. It also asks viewers to open or follow an additional link. Confirm how the feed is delivered, what language choices are actually available, and whether it stays synchronized with the stream. These distinctions are described in a streamer guide by Subanana, whose author says he runs the service; treat its descriptions of its own product as vendor claims. See Subanana’s live-caption guide.

Tools and workflows to consider
The options below solve different problems; they are examples, not a head-to-head ranking. No independent comparative accuracy or latency benchmark was established for them.
| Option | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Twitch caption delivery through a plugin or encoder | A Twitch streamer who wants captions available through the player’s CC control. | A compatible caption source is required. Confirm the source reaches Twitch and that viewers can see the captions in the player. |
| LocalVocal for OBS | A streamer who wants local speech transcription or translation integrated with OBS. | Choose a build that matches your operating system and hardware. Processing speed depends on the model and machine; no independent latency or accuracy benchmark was verified. |
| Hosted caption feed or OBS overlay | A creator seeking managed caption styling, language options, or a separate feed. | Determine whether captions are burned into the image or delivered separately, what audio is sent to the provider, what it retains, and what plan limits apply. |
| LiveScript | A streamer, researcher, or moderator who wants to search spoken words while a stream is live. | The vendor says it can transcribe YouTube and Twitch streams entered by URL, and other browser audio through a Chrome extension. Confirm current eligibility, language support, privacy terms, and plan details. |
| Amazon Transcribe streaming | A developer building a custom transcription or caption pipeline. | Integration work is required. Supported formats, languages, regions, quotas, and session limits matter to the implementation. |
LocalVocal: transcription inside an OBS workflow
The LocalVocal project describes an OBS plugin that uses Whisper and whisper.cpp to process speech locally. Its repository lists real-time transcription, translation, on-screen captions, TXT and SRT output, timestamp syncing with OBS recordings, partial transcription, and sending captions to RTMP streams such as Twitch or YouTube. It also lists CPU and GPU acceleration variants. These are project claims, not independent test results, and feature availability can change; check the build and release notes in the LocalVocal repository before installing.
Local processing can reduce dependence on a transcription cloud, but it does not guarantee a particular speed or accuracy. Your CPU or GPU, model choice, microphone signal, and stream mix all matter. Confirm that the plugin’s caption output matches the destination and recording workflow you intend to use.

LiveScript: searchable text rather than necessarily in-stream captions
LiveScript describes its service as real-time searchable text for YouTube and Twitch streams, with a Chrome extension for audio from other browser sources. Its FAQ states that words appear within 1–2 seconds in live mode; that is the vendor’s latency claim, not an independent measurement. The vendor lists a free tier with 5 minutes of live transcription per period and a Pro plan at $19.99/month. Limits and pricing can change, so verify them on the LiveScript site. Treat it as a transcript/search workflow unless its current documentation confirms that it supplies the caption delivery format you need.
Amazon Transcribe: custom pipeline considerations
AWS documentation lists FLAC, Ogg Opus, and signed 16-bit little-endian PCM as supported streaming audio formats; WAV is not accepted as PCM input in this context. AWS recommends lossless audio, uniform chunks, and, where possible, a 16,000 Hz sample rate as a quality and data-volume compromise. For audio types that permit specifying chunk size, its guide recommends chunks of 50–200 ms. These are AWS-specific engineering recommendations, not universal settings for every transcription service.
A custom implementation also has to account for supported languages and regions, concurrent-stream quotas, and session-duration limits. AWS cautions that the increased speed of streaming transcription can come with accuracy limitations. Consult the current Amazon Transcribe streaming guide for supported inputs and service constraints before designing around them.

Compare tools against your actual stream
Feature lists alone will not tell you whether captions work for your channel. Evaluate each candidate against the destination, audio, audience, and workflow you actually have:
- Destination: Does it support your platform and deliver captions in the required format—not just text on a separate dashboard?
- Caption delivery: Is the text part of the video, a platform caption track, or a separate page? Can viewers turn it off or choose a language?
- Language: Check spoken-language recognition and translation separately. “Supports a language” may not mean it can translate into or from it.
- Live behavior: Find out whether the tool displays partial words before a sentence is complete, how final text is revised, and how much delay is acceptable for your use.
- After the stream: If you need a transcript, timestamps, TXT/SRT export, or recording synchronization, confirm that exact feature rather than assuming live captions are saved.
- Privacy and processing: Establish whether audio stays on your device or is transmitted, how long it is retained, who can access it, whether it is used for training, and how deletion works. Comparable retention answers were not established for the tools covered here; check each provider’s current privacy terms.
- System and setup: Check operating-system and hardware requirements, supported audio formats, GPU options, and any account or plan limits.
- Real-world recognition: Try your own microphone, accent, names, game terminology, music, interruptions, and overlapping voices. A vendor’s language list or speed claim is not a guarantee for your audio.
Test captions before going live
- Set up the intended delivery path. Add the plugin, encoder source, browser source, or caption feed you plan to use. For Twitch, follow its current caption setup guidance and verify that captions reach the player.
- Record a representative test. Speak at your normal pace with the game audio and music levels you expect to use. Include names, abbreviations, technical terms, and moments when more than one person speaks.
- Check what viewers receive. Watch from a viewer account or a separate device. Confirm captions appear in the intended place, can be read at your stream’s resolution, and—if applicable—can be enabled, restyled, or switched between languages.
- Check delay and text behavior. Compare speech with captions, including the time it takes to settle on final wording. Decide whether partial text or corrections are acceptable for your stream.
- Check the recording separately. If you need captions saved with an OBS recording or a VOD, verify the actual file or playback. A live caption display alone does not establish that captions will be preserved in the recording.
- Review privacy and limits. Before using a hosted tool, read its current terms for audio transfer, retention, access, deletion, plan caps, and regional availability.
Accuracy, latency, and accessibility trade-offs
Fast text is not necessarily correct text. AWS explicitly notes that streaming transcription’s increased speed can have accuracy limitations. Music, game effects, poor mic levels, specialized vocabulary, accents, interruptions, and overlapping voices can all make a test on clean speech a poor predictor of stream performance. No comparable independent benchmark in the available evidence establishes an accuracy winner among the named tools.
For accessibility that requires certified accuracy, a trained human CART captioner remains a distinct service category; automated captions should not be represented as a substitute for certified captioning where that standard is required. For other streams, a carefully configured automated workflow may be useful, but test it with representative audio and make the caption controls easy for viewers to find.

Keep a YouTube video stream running separately from transcription
StreamNeo is not a transcription or captioning tool. It is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so a computer does not have to remain on. It streams to YouTube only; it does not generate captions from a camera or provide transcription features.
If your separate goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo can handle that playback workflow. You can start a first day free with no card, and the stream can recover automatically if YouTube drops it. To try it, start a StreamNeo free trial.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does OBS add captions on its own?
No. OBS needs a caption plugin, browser source, or captured caption view to put recognized words into a scene or stream.
Will YouTube’s automatic live captions translate for international viewers?
A Subanana guide dated July 31, 2026 describes YouTube live automatic captions as English-only and available in normal-latency mode. That is a secondary, vendor-authored guide; check current YouTube documentation and your stream settings before relying on a language or translation option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo live captions get saved with the recording?
Not necessarily. Whether captions are preserved depends on the platform and recording workflow; verify the actual VOD or recording rather than inferring it from an on-screen live caption display.
