It is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming, and it gives you control over scenes and sources such as games, windows, webcams, and audio. A webcam is optional: you can stream gameplay or a screen without one.
Why OBS Studio is the leading Linux option
OBS is the only product in the options covered here that is directly established as both a Linux-capable application and a live-streaming tool. It can combine multiple sources into scenes and provides an audio mixer with per-source filters, making it a flexible choice for game streams, screen broadcasts, and camera-on setups.
That flexibility comes with setup work: you need to configure sources, audio, and a broadcast destination, then check that your computer can handle the scene and encoding workload. Basic system requirements alone do not guarantee good streaming performance.
Install OBS on Linux
Choose the route for your distribution
- Ubuntu: The OBS Linux installation guidance documents an OBS PPA installation route. Check that page and your Ubuntu version before adding a repository, since installation instructions can change.
- Other distributions: OBS recommends Flathub. Its project wiki identifies Flatpak and Ubuntu as supported Linux builds; packages for other distributions are community-provided. If you use a distribution package, follow your distribution’s documentation and support guidance.
The cited OBS installation guidance is dated 2021, so verify the current instructions for your distribution before installing. Release and platform information can change.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check your Linux system before configuring a stream
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux/Unix requirements. Meeting those thresholds does not show that a particular machine can encode your chosen stream smoothly: CPU and GPU load depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for settings suited to your hardware and intended use. Then test the complete scene and audio chain before broadcasting. A demanding game capture, multiple sources, browser windows, and filters can change the load substantially.

Set up an OBS scene for a game or screen stream
- Create a scene: In OBS, add a scene for the layout you plan to broadcast. You can make separate scenes for gameplay, an intermission screen, or a closing screen.
- Add only the sources you need: OBS supports sources including game or window capture, capture cards, webcams, images, text, and browser windows. A webcam is optional, not a prerequisite for streaming.
- Arrange and check the scene: Confirm that the game or screen is visible and that overlays do not obscure important content. Switch between any scenes you expect to use during the broadcast.
- Check audio in the mixer: Confirm that the intended sources register and are balanced. OBS provides per-source audio filters; add or adjust them only when you have a specific audio problem to address.
- Configure the broadcast destination: In OBS’s stream settings, select the service you intend to use and enter its stream key using that service’s current instructions. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a scene or share it. The exact labels and required stream settings depend on the destination, and no one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe value is established here as universal.
- Run a test before going live: Check picture, sound, scene changes, and system load in a private or otherwise low-risk test where the destination allows it. If performance is unstable, reduce workload by simplifying the scene or adjusting the wizard’s suggested output settings before a public broadcast.
OBS alternatives on Linux: what is established
| Software | Linux availability in the reviewed official material | What it is established to do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Linux guidance documents an Ubuntu PPA route and recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions; other distribution packages are community-provided. | Live streaming and recording, with scenes, multiple source types, and audio controls. | Live broadcasts where you want to compose game, screen, camera, or other sources. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Its official quick-start guide lists Windows 11 and macOS 12 or later, not Linux. | The cited guide does not establish Linux support. | Not a verified native Linux alternative based on the platform requirements listed in that guide. This does not establish whether every workaround or compatibility layer is impossible. |
| Kdenlive | Official downloads include Linux AppImage and Flatpak options. | Linux availability is established, but the download page does not establish it as a live-streaming application. | Consider it as an adjacent video-editing tool for post-production, not as a confirmed OBS replacement for live broadcasting. |
That is not a complete roster of Linux streaming applications. The available evidence establishes OBS’s role more clearly than it establishes other native Linux options, so a broader ranked list would imply more certainty than is warranted.

Troubleshooting common OBS setup problems
- OBS will not launch or initialize graphics: Check that your GPU supports the listed OpenGL 3.3 requirement and that your Linux display environment is X or Wayland. Also confirm your chosen package is appropriate for your distribution.
- The stream is choppy or the computer struggles: Meeting the baseline requirements is not a performance guarantee. Encoding choice, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity all affect demand. Revisit the Auto-Configuration Wizard and simplify the scene or lower output demands, then test again.
- A source is missing or obscured: Review the active scene and its source list, and confirm the intended game, window, capture card, image, text, or browser source is included and visible.
- Audio is missing or unbalanced: Check the audio mixer for the source you expect to hear, then inspect its source configuration and filters. Test the full audio chain before the public stream.
- A distribution package behaves differently from expected: OBS notes that packages for distributions beyond its supported Flatpak and Ubuntu builds are community-provided. Consult the package maintainer or distribution documentation, or use the recommended route for your distribution.
