To turn a livestream into useful videos and Shorts, keep the full recording, use AI to find promising moments, then review and edit every clip before publishing. Check that each cut makes sense on its own, keep the right context in frame, correct captions, and confirm that you have the rights to everything in the recording.
What AI can—and cannot—do with a livestream
AI clip tools can suggest moments, create vertical versions, and generate captions. Treat their output as a first edit, not a finished publication: the available product documentation describes features, not a verified accuracy rate. You still need to check whether a clip expresses a complete thought and preserves its meaning.
A practical workflow is to preserve the original, generate candidate clips, review and trim them, adjust framing and captions, then adapt each export to its destination.
1. Preserve the recording and make moments easier to find
Keep the complete recording, even if you expect to publish only short clips. The surrounding conversation can help you restore context, find a cleaner cut, or make a longer edited video later.

For future broadcasts, you can mark moments as they happen. StreamYard, for example, documents saying “Clip that” during a broadcast as a marker for later clip suggestions; that is a StreamYard-specific technique, not a requirement for other tools. StreamYard’s AI Clips guide also describes analyzing recordings up to six hours and using text prompts to guide topics. Confirm current plan limits and availability before relying on these capabilities.
2. Generate candidates, then choose clips with a complete idea
Choose a clip finder or transcript editor that can work with your recording. StreamYard says its AI Clips analyzes a recording and generates vertical 9:16 captioned clips with a title. Descript describes selecting candidate clips from a transcript and reframing them. Those are documented features, not evidence that either tool will reliably find the best moment in every recording.
Review candidates against these editorial checks:
- One clear point: The clip should focus on one idea, reaction, demonstration, or exchange.
- Enough setup: Include any question, game situation, or explanation a viewer needs to understand what follows.
- A satisfying endpoint: Keep the answer, payoff, or conclusion; avoid cutting off the thought.
- Meaning intact: Do not remove a qualification or response that changes what a speaker meant.
- Clean timing: Trim dead air when doing so does not make turn-taking or the action confusing.
Listen for misheard names, game terminology, and technical terms in transcripts. Correct the transcript or captions rather than assuming automatic text is accurate.

3. Edit framing and captions for vertical viewing
When converting a landscape stream to 9:16, inspect the whole clip. Keep the relevant speaker, gameplay action, interface details, slides, and essential labels visible. Captions should be readable without covering the subject or important game information.
Conversion methods vary. StreamYard documents a publishing flow that fills the space above and below the vertical video with a blurred version of the frame; its article says that flow does not zoom or recenter the video. That is one product’s behavior, not a universal requirement. If your editor provides crop or subject-position controls, check the result frame by frame—especially when a speaker, cursor, or game action moves.
StreamYard separately documents automatic caption generation and caption editing or customization. Captions are useful, but should still be checked for names, punctuation, and meaning.

4. Export and publish according to the destination
Do not confuse a tool’s export limit with a platform’s upload rules. StreamYard’s documented short-form workflow produces clips up to 60 seconds. YouTube’s current rule is different: YouTube Help says eligible square or vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded after October 15, 2024 are categorized as Shorts for standard channels. YouTube also says creators can upload square or vertical videos up to three minutes through YouTube Studio. These are the rules stated in YouTube Help retrieved October 3, 2026; check the current help pages before publishing because format and music rules can change.
To upload through Studio, open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Upload videos, and choose the square or vertical file. Check the video’s audience, title, description, visibility, and other publishing settings before making it public.

5. Check rights before you publish
Review music, gameplay audio, images, clips, and other third-party material in the recording. YouTube warns that externally created uploads using copyright-protected material without approval may receive a Content ID claim or a removal request. YouTube’s help material also describes copyright-claim handling for Shorts longer than one minute. Check the current YouTube Help page on three-minute Shorts and YouTube’s upload instructions before relying on music or other protected content.
A clip being short, edited, or generated with AI does not itself establish that you have permission to use material in it. If you do not have the necessary rights, remove or replace the material before publishing.
