You can broadcast a video stored on a Synology NAS by using an encoder to play the file and send its live output to YouTube. The NAS can store the video, but YouTube’s encoder workflow needs a separate playback-and-encoding step. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for streaming a camera, not playing a prerecorded file.
How the setup works
The basic path is: video file on your NAS → encoder that can access and play the file → YouTube Live. The encoder may run on a computer or another compatible device. It reads the file, produces a live video feed, and sends that feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
This is not the same as uploading a video to YouTube as a regular video. In a live broadcast, the encoder sends the video in real time; viewers watch the live event, and YouTube may archive it afterward.
Prepare the file and choose an encoder
- Check the source file. Confirm that the video and its audio play correctly, and note the intended duration. Make sure the encoder you choose can read the file format and access its location on the NAS.
- Choose where playback and encoding happen. The NAS can remain the media store while a separate computer or compatible device runs the encoder. Confirm that the chosen setup can play the file and send an RTMP or RTMPS stream to YouTube.
- Check local capacity. Playback and encoding use the encoder device’s resources, while the stream depends on a stable internet upload connection. Test the connection and settings before a public broadcast.
The official Synology instructions do not establish a particular Container Manager or FFmpeg recipe, hardware-acceleration support, or compatibility for specific NAS models. Do not assume a command or container configuration will work on your device without checking its DSM version, package compatibility, and encoder documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. YouTube says scheduled streams can be promoted and viewers can set reminders. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a command or configuration file, or expose it in logs.
- Set the encoder to play the intended NAS file and send its output to YouTube. Start the encoder ahead of the planned broadcast so YouTube has time to receive the feed.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the preview, check that the picture and audio are correct, then click Go live when you are ready to begin. For a scheduled event, starting the encoder alone is not the same as starting the broadcast; follow the control-room workflow.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not remove the need to check the event’s settings or confirm the archive afterward.
Choose a protocol and encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Its current encoder-settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for applicable RTMP/RTMPS streams, with AAC or MP3 audio. The encoder must support the protocol and settings you select. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table as the authority when configuring a profile.

| Example profile | YouTube recommended bitrate range | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps | YouTube encoder-settings table, accessed 2026; the recommendation is specific to this codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps | YouTube encoder-settings table, accessed 2026; the recommendation is specific to this codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder offers those settings; YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Match the frame rate and resolution to the source, encoder capability, and available upload bandwidth rather than selecting the highest setting automatically.
- Bitrate ranges are not universal targets. Test the upload connection and check YouTube’s stream health; leave enough headroom for a stable feed.
Test and monitor the broadcast
Before the actual event, test with audio and motion similar to the planned video. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview before going live, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream. Its streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
- Play the intended file and confirm the expected picture, soundtrack, and duration.
- Check that the preview appears in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.
- Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems, or encoder warnings while streaming.
What Synology’s native Live Broadcast feature does
Synology’s Surveillance Station Live Broadcast instructions describe a camera-to-YouTube workflow: enable the feature, enter YouTube’s RTMP path and key, then select a camera and stream profile. The version 8 help page says YouTube Live supports H.264 video for that feature. Synology’s DSM 7.4 Surveillance Station specifications likewise describe broadcasting live camera streams to YouTube.

That documented feature should not be treated as a prerecorded-file player. For a NAS-stored video, use an encoder workflow that can play the file and send it to YouTube; verify compatibility for your own Synology model, DSM release, and chosen encoder.
