The hostname must match exactly; a path such as /youtube_chat is not part of the hostname.
Embed YouTube Live Chat with an iframe
- Get the stream’s video ID. Open its YouTube watch-page URL. In a URL such as
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12345, the video ID is12345. - Find the hostname of the page where the chat will appear. For
https://www.example.com/youtube_chat, the hostname iswww.example.com; leave off the scheme, path, and trailing slash. - Build the chat URL. Replace the example ID and hostname in YouTube’s documented pattern:
https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=12345&embed_domain=www.example.com - Use that URL as the iframe’s
src. For example, with your own values substituted:<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=YOUR_VIDEO_ID&embed_domain=www.example.com"></iframe>
The sample iframe shows the essential URL only. Replace both example values, and add any sizing or layout choices appropriate to your site. YouTube’s documented instructions identify the iframe URL and matching domain but do not prescribe dimensions or a responsive CSS recipe. What to check if the chat does not open
- Confirm the hostname matches. If the page is on
www.example.com, usewww.example.comforembed_domain. A mismatch prevents the embedded chat from opening. Include the actual host in use;www.example.comandexample.comare different hostnames. - Check that the URL belongs to a live stream. The documented pattern is for a livestream. The cited instructions do not establish that it works for a replay or an ordinary video page.
- Test on desktop web. YouTube Help says embedding Live Chat is not available on mobile web.
- Make sure you are embedding chat, not expecting it from the video player. Chat on a YouTube watch page and chat alongside an embedded video player are separate: YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not on embedded players. Adding an embedded player alone does not add the chat.
- Check whether the event is still live. Live chat is available while the live event is active and is no longer available for that event after it ends.

Use the API only when you need a custom chat display
The iframe is the simpler choice when you want to show YouTube’s chat interface. If your site needs to retrieve messages and render them in its own design, YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents two methods:

liveChatMessages.listretrieves messages using the broadcast’s live chat ID. List responses include a polling interval and page token.liveChatMessages.streamListprovides a server-streaming connection for lower-latency message delivery. Google recommends it over repeatedly polling withlist.
The broadcast’s snippet.liveChatId provides the chat ID used by the API. This is an application-development route, not a ready-made unauthenticated iframe; you will need to build an API client and account for the live event’s lifecycle. Consult the LiveChatMessages API reference and streamList method reference for implementation details. The API documentation describes retrieving messages; it does not make the chat available after the event ends.
