For a conventional single-output Twitch stream, start with CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose bitrate, output resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings your internet connection and PC can sustain together. A stable 720p stream is better than a higher-resolution stream that drops frames. Twitch’s listed profiles—1080p60 at 6000 kbps, 720p60 at 4500 kbps, and 720p30 at 3000 kbps—are starting points, not guarantees for every setup.
Start with a stable Twitch profile
Open OBS and go to Settings > Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced to access the streaming encoder settings. Twitch’s conventional guidance uses constant bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval; select those before tuning quality.
- In Settings > Output > Streaming, choose an encoder available on your system.
- Set Rate Control to CBR.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 s.
- Choose a video bitrate, resolution, and frame rate that your connection and computer can maintain under the workload of your stream.
- Run a test with the game and scenes you expect to use before relying on the profile live.
Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines emphasize stability over pushing quality settings that cause dropped frames or test the limits of your connection. OBS likewise recommends testing the stream rather than assuming a setting will work.
Choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second. Increasing resolution or frame rate generally takes more bandwidth and encoding work, so do not choose a bitrate in isolation. Twitch’s published example profiles are:

These are Twitch recommendations; the accessed Twitch page does not state a publication year. Actual performance depends on your connection to the selected Twitch ingest server, other network traffic, encoder, game load, and account or workflow features. A speed-test result alone does not prove the route to Twitch can sustain a bitrate.
Set an upload target with headroom
When diagnosing dropped frames, OBS Project’s 2024 troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of your total upload speed for stream bitrate. Treat that as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guaranteed safe limit: leave capacity for other household or computer traffic and account for route stability. If drops continue, lower the video bitrate and test a different Twitch server.
Pick output size and FPS for the content
In OBS, Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where sources are arranged, often your monitor or game resolution. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the final size sent to viewers. For example, you can work with 1080p sources on the canvas and scale the output to 720p.

Fast-moving games can benefit from 60 fps when your PC and connection can sustain it. If performance or delivery is unstable, test 30 fps, a lower output resolution, or both. There is no universal best resolution: compare the result under the same game, scene complexity, and network conditions you expect while live.

Choose an encoder your PC can handle
OBS supports software encoding such as x264 and hardware encoders available through your CPU or GPU. Hardware encoding moves work to a specialized component and can reduce CPU load. OBS notes that modern hardware encoders generally provide good quality with minimal performance impact, while older generations may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate. The better choice depends on your actual hardware and game workload.
Hardware encoder
If OBS offers a hardware encoder, test it first while playing your game and monitoring rendering and encoding performance. A hardware encoder can leave more CPU capacity for a game, but its image quality varies by generation and settings.

x264 software encoder
x264 uses substantial CPU. Twitch recommends beginning with the veryfast preset and experimenting cautiously. Twitch says presets above Faster require CPUs with six or more cores; a slower preset may improve compression but can overload a system already running a game and OBS. Do not change to a heavier preset unless a test shows the machine can keep up.
No single encoder choice or preset can be called best for all PCs. Compare available hardware encoding and x264 on your own system at the intended resolution, FPS, and bitrate.

Understand Twitch quality options and Enhanced Broadcasting
OBS explains that Twitch transcoding can let viewers select lower-quality versions of a stream, but availability depends on account tier: Partners are guaranteed full access, Affiliates receive it as available with priority, and other streamers receive it as available. A consistent keyframe interval helps quality options transition smoothly.

Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting setup documentation describes an alternate path with automatic configuration and multiple client-side encodes. Twitch says Enhanced Broadcasting is required for Dual Format Streaming and its 2K workflow. If you use an eligible Enhanced Broadcasting setup, conventional single-output recommendations may not describe the whole configuration; follow Twitch’s current setup steps. The reviewed official material does not establish a complete OBS-version and operating-system compatibility matrix, so check the current Twitch guidance for your installation.

Use OBS’s statistics and test under the same game and scene load you intend to stream. Dropped frames usually point first to an unstable or insufficient connection to the ingest server; encoding or rendering lag instead calls for reducing system workload.
- Test before going live. Run a private test or otherwise verify that the stream runs smoothly with the expected game and scenes.
- If OBS reports dropped frames, lower video bitrate. Test a different Twitch ingest server as well. On Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest as a way to find a server with a good Quality score.
- If network delivery is stable but rendering or encoding struggles, reduce load. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate, review encoder choice and preset, and account for the game’s load on the PC.
- Consider dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation. OBS says dynamically changing bitrate can help manage congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection issue and may reduce stream quality.

Keep Twitch content and account rules in view
Technical settings do not make content permissible. Before streaming a game, music, or other material, make sure you have the rights or permissions required and follow Twitch’s current Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Do not assume that reused or background material is cleared simply because it appears in a game or on another channel.
