For recording console footage on a computer, OBS Studio is a flexible software choice—but it needs either a compatible capture device or a console-to-PC app stream such as PS Remote Play or the Xbox app. Nintendo Switch-family capture-card recording requires a dock; Switch Lite cannot use that route.
Which recording method fits your console?

There is no single best screen recorder for every console player. Native capture is convenient for simple clips; a computer-based workflow is more suited to layouts, separate audio tracks, and keeping recordings for editing. A capture card is an acquisition device for that computer workflow, not a requirement for every kind of console recording.
Record a clip directly on PS5
Start a new recording
- Open the PS5 Create menu.
- Select Start New Recording.
- When finished, stop the recording and find the saved clip in your media collection.
Sony’s PS5 guidance says a new recording can capture up to one hour of gameplay. The actual clip still depends on available storage and whether the scene allows capture; Sony notes that some scenes cannot be recorded.
Save gameplay that already happened
- Open the Create menu.
- Select Save Recent Gameplay.
- Choose the segment length, from the last 15 seconds up to one hour.
This is useful when you did not start a recording before a moment occurred. Review the saved clip before deleting source footage or changing capture settings.

Adjust format, resolution, and audio
PS5’s Capture Options let you change video format and resolution and choose whether microphone or voice-chat audio is included. If you include other players’ voices, Sony advises asking voice-chat participants for permission first. Exact menu labels and available options can vary with system software.
Record console footage in OBS Studio
OBS Studio can receive console footage through either a capture device or a console-streaming app window. OBS identifies both as routes for recording or streaming console footage. Choose based on whether you prefer a direct video connection or can rely on your local network.

Route 1: Capture device connected to the computer
- Connect the console’s video output to a compatible capture device. If you want to play on a separate display while capturing, check that the device supports the passthrough you need.
- Connect the capture device to the computer using an interface supported by the device and your operating system.
- In OBS, add a Video Capture Source and select the capture device. Set the source’s resolution and frame rate to a mode the device and computer support.
- Add and position the source in your scene. Check that game audio is arriving through the expected device or audio source, then make a short test recording and review picture, sound, and sync.
Before buying a device, compare console compatibility, capture resolution and frame rate, passthrough resolution and frame rate, HDR support, audio inputs, computer connection, and operating-system compatibility. Maximum passthrough performance does not mean the device can record at the same resolution or frame rate. HDR capture may also be unavailable at some resolution/frame-rate combinations.
Route 2: Capture PS Remote Play or the Xbox app window
- Set up the relevant console app on the computer and connect it to the console.
- In OBS, add a Window Capture source and select the PS Remote Play or Xbox app window showing the game.
- Arrange the window in your scene, check audio routing, and record a test while the console is streaming to the PC.
This avoids a capture device, but the console-to-computer network connection is part of the capture chain. OBS notes that this method needs a faster connection between console and PC to maintain optimal quality. If the picture stutters or degrades, test the network before changing OBS recording settings.

Switch-family compatibility
For capture-device recording, Nintendo Switch-family systems need to be docked. Switch Lite cannot be docked, so it cannot use this capture-card route. Confirm the exact console and capture device are compatible before building a computer workflow around them.
Choose a capture device by the recording you need
Capture hardware determines how console video reaches the computer; OBS is the software used to arrange and record that input. For example, Elgato lists its Game Capture 4K X as compatible with PS5/Pro, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and other devices, and lists OBS among supported apps. Its product specifications distinguish capture modes from passthrough performance, and note HDR limitations for some combinations. That makes it one concrete option to evaluate, not an independently tested winner.

- OBS does not show the game: Confirm the capture device is selected as the Video Capture Source, or that Window Capture targets the active console app window. Recheck console, device, and operating-system compatibility.
- Remote Play or the Xbox app looks unstable: The app-window method depends on the network between console and computer. Improve that connection or switch to a capture device if a direct video path better fits your setup.
- Recorded quality is lower than expected: Check the device’s capture specification separately from passthrough, then verify the selected source mode and OBS recording settings. A passthrough maximum is not a recording guarantee.
- HDR is missing or unavailable: Check the exact capture device’s supported HDR modes; HDR may not be supported at every resolution and frame rate.
- Switch Lite will not feed a capture card: It cannot be docked, and the documented capture-device workflow requires a docked Switch-family system.
- PS5 clip will not save: The scene may be blocked from capture, or storage may be limited. Try a different scene and check available console storage.
- Voice chat is absent or should not be included: Review PS5 Capture Options for microphone and voice-chat audio, and ask participants before recording their voices.
Copyright and publishing recorded gameplay
A successful recording is not automatically cleared for every use. Game footage, music, and other in-game material may be subject to rights and platform rules. Review the game publisher’s permissions and YouTube’s policies before uploading or monetizing a recording. Capturing voice chat also raises consent considerations; Sony specifically advises asking participants before their voices are included.
