Before installing any plugin, check that it supports your operating system, CPU architecture, and OBS version—compatibility is not universal.
Choose a plugin for the job you need done
OBS plugins can add sources, filters, and other features; some also let OBS communicate with hardware such as an Elgato Stream Deck. The OBS forum resource directory is a place to discover examples, not an endorsement or a guarantee that a resource will work with your setup. Confirm the individual plugin’s documentation, platform support, OBS-version requirements, and update status before downloading.
| Customization job | Example to investigate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Animate source movement between scenes | Move | Supported OS and OBS version; matching-source requirements; Studio Mode limitation |
| Automate OBS tasks | Advanced Scene Switcher | Whether its current documentation supports the exact trigger or workflow you need |
| Build a separate vertical canvas | Aitum Vertical | Supported operating systems and OBS versions |
| Add filters or visual effects | Resources such as Retro Effects or Advanced Masks | The specific effect, compatibility, documentation, and maintenance status |
| Control OBS with physical buttons | A compatible plugin and optional control hardware | Compatibility of the particular plugin and hardware; no specific device is required by OBS |
These examples come from the OBS forum resource directory. Treat them as starting points: a listing alone does not establish that a plugin is current or suitable for a particular system.
Move: animate sources across scenes
Move animates the position and size of sources when you switch scenes. If two scenes contain similarly named sources, it can match them and animate a source from one position to the other. Its documented controls include easing, zooming newly appearing or disappearing sources, position, curve, and scaling behavior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When it fits
Move is worth considering when a scene change should feel like a visual transition rather than an abrupt replacement—for example, when a camera or game-capture source should shift to a different part of the canvas. The plugin’s resource page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support; check that page for the current instructions and compatibility details for your build.
Matching and Studio Mode caveat
For sources to match, Move’s documentation says they need the same transformation type and alignment. Its matching behavior does not work in Studio Mode when duplicate sources are switched on. If your scene workflow relies on that combination, test the plugin in a copy of the scene collection before adopting it.
Find automation, vertical, and effects plugins carefully
Automation
The OBS directory lists Advanced Scene Switcher as a task-automation plugin. The directory does not establish which triggers or workflows are supported in a particular current release. Check the plugin’s own documentation against the action you want to automate before building your show around it.

Vertical content
Aitum Vertical is listed as a separate canvas for vertical content. Confirm its current supported OBS versions and operating systems, then check whether its workflow matches how you need to compose and manage your vertical output.
Filters and visual effects
The directory includes shader, mask, and retro-effect resources, including Advanced Masks and Retro Effects. Choose based on the specific visual result you want. The directory examples do not establish broad performance improvements or a general increase in stream quality.
Physical control
Some plugins can connect OBS to external hardware such as the Elgato Stream Deck, as the OBS plugin guide notes. A button deck is optional; it is not itself a plugin or a requirement for installing one. Check the exact plugin and hardware documentation for compatibility before buying or configuring a device.

Check compatibility before installing
OBS cautions that plugins can be incompatible because they target a different operating system, CPU architecture (for example, x86_64 versus ARM64), or OBS version. Check all three, along with the plugin author’s latest installation notes, before downloading. A plugin that worked on an older OBS build may not load correctly after an update.
- Operating system: Confirm the plugin explicitly supports Windows, macOS, or your Linux distribution.
- CPU architecture: Match the download to your system, such as x86_64 or ARM64.
- OBS version: Check the stated minimum and supported versions against the version you run.
- Current instructions: Follow the plugin author’s latest installation guidance rather than an old tutorial.
- Workflow fit: Make sure the feature solves a real task in your scenes before relying on it live.
OBS’s general plugin guide gives OS-specific guidance and says to consult each plugin’s documentation for manual installation. It also says Linux Flatpak users should install plugins using Flatpak. Windows users should additionally follow the newer Windows-specific guidance below.

In guidance dated September 21, 2026, OBS says Studio 33.0 updates how plugins are loaded. Plugins in earlier locations may still load but be marked Legacy. OBS says the old Program Files legacy location will not load in OBS Studio 34.0 and later, and portable Windows installations use a separate plugin directory. Use the current OBS Windows plugin-loading instructions and the plugin author’s latest installer notes instead of relying on a folder path from an older guide.

- For Windows on OBS Studio 33.0 or later, consult OBS’s current loading guidance; account for the separate portable-install directory.
- Read the plugin documentation for limitations that could affect your scene setup, then test in a copy of your scene collection before using it during a live show.
- Remove or disable the plugin if it does not solve the workflow need or causes problems; check its documentation for the appropriate uninstall method.
What OBS licensing means for creators
The OBS Project Help Portal says: “Absolutely! OBS is open-source software developed by volunteer contributors around the world in their free time.” It also states that OBS is distributed under GPLv2, is free for any use, and can be used commercially without restrictions. See the OBS Project Help Portal’s licensing explanation.
Keep a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS running
OBS plugins customize OBS; they do not by themselves keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running after your computer is off. If your separate goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
