For an IRL stream captured on your phone, start with YouTube’s mobile workflow or use a mobile encoder such as PRISM Live Studio or Larix Broadcaster. Choose OBS Studio when you want desktop-style control over scenes, sources, transitions, and audio. The right choice depends on where you capture and produce the stream, your devices, and how much gear and setup you are willing to take into the field.
How to choose streaming software for an IRL YouTube stream
IRL streams are usually captured away from a fixed gaming or studio setup, so first decide where the video will be produced:
- Phone only: Use YouTube’s mobile workflow for the most direct phone-based approach.
- Phone with an encoder app: Choose a mobile app when you want its capture controls or documented protocol options.
- Desktop production: Use OBS when you want to assemble multiple sources, scenes, audio processing, and transitions on a computer.
- Camera or broadcast rig: YouTube also supports hardware encoders for setups built around dedicated cameras or switching equipment.
YouTube documents webcam, mobile-device, and encoder routes. An encoder can support external audio and video equipment as well as more advanced productions. None of the options below is a universal winner: app features and device support vary, and the available product descriptions do not establish comparative reliability or field performance.
Best software options by IRL streaming workflow
YouTube mobile streaming: simplest phone-first route
YouTube supports streaming from a mobile device, which suits creators who want to capture and broadcast from a phone without building a desktop production workflow. Check that your device and YouTube account can use the mobile live feature before planning a broadcast. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave account setup until the day of an event. YouTube’s live-streaming help explains its available workflows.

PRISM Live Studio: a mobile encoder option for IRL
YouTube lists PRISM Live Studio for iOS and Android and describes it as optimized for IRL and gaming. It is worth considering if you want a dedicated mobile streaming app rather than the direct YouTube workflow. Confirm the app’s current operating-system and device requirements, along with any capture or audio controls you need; the listing is not an independent performance test.
YouTube also lists a Windows edition of PRISM as no-charge, with effects, virtual background or camera features, and integration with PRISM mobile apps. PRISM’s download page lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS Monterey 12.3 or higher; requirements can change, so check the current download page before installing: PRISM Live Studio downloads.

Larix Broadcaster: mobile app with documented protocol options
YouTube lists Larix Broadcaster for iOS and Android. Its listing describes support for SRT, RTMP, NDI, WebRTC, Zixi, and other protocols, as well as overlays, camera controls, and audio settings. Consider it if you have a specific workflow or protocol requirement and your equipment supports it. Protocol names alone do not show that one option will be more reliable on your cellular connection; test your own device, network, and audio routing before an important stream. See YouTube’s encoder list for the product details it surfaces.
OBS Studio: desktop production control
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its official site lists scenes and sources, transitions, audio filters, hotkeys, preview, multiview, and plugin and script support. That makes it a fit when you want to compose a more controlled show from multiple video or audio sources. The trade-off is setup: you must configure the scenes, sources, and audio chain, and manage the computer and connections used in the production. The documented feature set does not establish that OBS is easier or more reliable than a phone app for field streaming.

Hardware encoders: for dedicated camera and switching rigs
YouTube lists hardware encoders and names LiveU Solo as a wireless encoder. A dedicated encoder may suit a creator who already has a camera or switching rig and wants to build a more involved production. YouTube also names microphones, mixers, and multiple cameras as possible professional setup components. These are optional choices, not prerequisites for going live; no gear-price or value comparison is established here.

What you need to connect an encoder to YouTube
- Enable live streaming early. For a first-time setup, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it and verify access before the planned broadcast.
- Open the YouTube Live setup. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube and locate its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Paste the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the corresponding settings in OBS, PRISM, Larix, or the encoder you are using. The exact screen names vary by product.
- Check the field setup before going live. Confirm that the correct camera and audio source are selected, your stream key belongs to the intended broadcast, and your device has the network and power available for the session.
Treat your stream key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before relying on that stream configuration again.

Capture, production, and carried equipment
A phone-only setup keeps capture and broadcast together. Adding a dedicated microphone, headphones, mounts, another camera, or a separate encoder can address a real production need, but each adds compatibility checks and equipment to carry. YouTube gives an external microphone and headphones as examples of streaming hardware; neither is required to go live. If built-in phone audio is inadequate, check that any external microphone works with your phone and chosen app, and confirm that the encoder is receiving the intended input.

Network, power, and audio routing
Test the actual route you plan to use: the phone or camera, encoder app, network connection, power source, and audio input. The official listings do not compare heat, battery endurance, cellular coverage, or reconnect behavior, so those outcomes cannot be assumed for a particular app or protocol. A rehearsal in a location with similar conditions is more informative than choosing software based on an unsupported reliability claim.
Copyright and YouTube rules
Streaming software does not grant rights to music, video, or other material captured or played in your broadcast. Use content you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements before including third-party material. Avoid exposing private information or filming people in contexts where you lack permission.
Common setup problems and fixes
- You cannot start a first live stream: Live streaming may still be activating. Enable it well in advance; YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder will not connect: Recheck that you copied the server URL and stream key for the intended YouTube broadcast into the matching encoder fields. If a key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The stream has no audio or uses the wrong microphone: Check the selected audio input in the app or encoder, confirm the phone or computer recognizes the device, and make a short test recording or private test before the public stream.
- The picture or audio breaks up in the field: The reviewed product descriptions do not establish a universal fix or protocol winner. Check the connection and power, reduce unnecessary network use, and test the same device and location before a high-stakes broadcast.
- An app or feature is unavailable on your device: Verify current OS, processor, and app requirements on the product’s official download page; requirements can change.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for a different job from live mobile IRL broadcasting: it keeps a YouTube channel live by looping videos you upload, rather than sending a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams your uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use OBS for a mobile YouTube stream?
Yes. OBS is desktop software, so you need a way to bring the phone’s video and audio into the computer and a connection from that computer to YouTube. That adds equipment and configuration compared with broadcasting directly from a phone.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does SRT guarantee a more reliable IRL stream than RTMP?
No such guarantee is established by the product listings. The result depends on the encoder, devices, network, and setup; test your intended route rather than treating a protocol name as a reliability promise.
