Use YouTube Live Chat for open comments, polls for a choice between options, Live Q&A to collect and select questions, and reactions for quick signals. Tell viewers how their input will shape the stream, prepare moderation settings before going live, and review chat replay afterward when it is available.
Choose the right feedback tool

Plan how you will use the responses
- Pick one clear purpose for each interaction. For a poll, use options viewers can readily distinguish. For Q&A, give a prompt that tells people what questions are useful. A focused prompt makes responses easier to interpret, though it cannot guarantee a particular response.
- Set expectations. Tell viewers whether a poll will determine the next segment, or whether you will select and answer Q&A questions. When practical, state the result and follow through so the audience can see how its input was used.
- Choose a manageable pace. Polls and reactions can give a quick indication of preference; open chat and Q&A need more host attention. If you are playing a game or presenting, ask one question at a time and leave room to read and respond.
Create a poll or start Live Q&A
On a computer
- Schedule or start your YouTube live stream and open its Live Chat.
- To create a poll, use the poll option at the bottom of the chat window, enter the question and answer options, and publish it.
- When you are ready to close the poll, end it from the poll banner. YouTube displays the results in chat.
- To start Q&A, select Add, then Start a Q&A. Enter a prompt and start the session.
- To surface a question, choose it from the Questions list and select Select question. YouTube pins the selected question at the top of chat so viewers can follow which one you are answering.
On Android
YouTube’s Android instructions use the mobile app’s Add control to create a poll or start Q&A. Menu placement and labels can vary between desktop and mobile interfaces, so follow the controls shown in the current app.
Make feedback safer and easier to manage
Before relying on chat for audience input, decide who can participate and who will handle moderation. YouTube documents standard and managing moderators, blocked words, automatic moderation, and slow mode. Assign trusted moderators when possible, especially if you expect a fast-moving chat.
- Set participation limits if needed. YouTube creator guidance describes limiting chat to members, subscribers, or specific people. This may make chat more manageable, but it also narrows who can contribute.
- Configure automatic moderation. YouTube offers Basic or Strict settings for potentially inappropriate messages, as well as blocked words. Messages held for review remain hidden unless a moderator acts. If shown, a held message appears in the feed at the original time it was submitted.
- Use slow mode when messages move too quickly. It sets a wait between messages. It does not apply to the channel owner, moderators, or channel members.
- Give moderators a clear role. They can interact with viewers and remove inappropriate messages, leaving you more attention for the stream and selected feedback.
Moderation tools help, but they are not a guarantee that every unsuitable message will be caught. YouTube notes that no system is perfect.

Review feedback after the stream
Live chat replay is available on stream archives by default according to YouTube’s moderation guidance, but creators can turn it off. When replay is available, use it to locate audience questions or moments worth revisiting. Do not assume every viewer can access chat in every playback situation: YouTube says Live Chat is not available on embedded players.
