For most YouTube creators choosing an overlay workflow, the decision comes down to StreamElements or Streamlabs: StreamElements suits creators who want to build overlays in a browser-based editor and add them to broadcast software as one browser source; Streamlabs is a natural option if you already use OBS Studio and want Streamlabs tools integrated into it. The right choice depends on your broadcast software, operating system, customization needs, and which features are included in the plan you want.
What a streaming overlay does
An overlay places broadcast visuals—such as alerts, labels, goals, and chat—over the video shown on your live stream. It is not a replacement for broadcast software: your production setup still has to display the overlay as part of the stream.
YouTube’s list of third-party tools includes StreamElements and Streamlabs, but YouTube says, “None of the products listed below are made by or endorsed by Google LLC.” A listing is not a Google endorsement. YouTube Help: tools for live streaming.
StreamElements vs. Streamlabs
| Tool | How it fits into a YouTube broadcast | Best fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamElements | Build an overlay in the Overlay Editor and display it in broadcast software through a single browser source. Start with built-in, no-code options or use code for custom widgets. | Creators who want a browser-based editor, a straightforward browser-source workflow, or the option to customize widget behavior. | Confirm the editor has the widgets and integrations you need. StreamElements currently advertises customizable alerts and widgets as free; that is the vendor’s claim, not an independent guarantee. |
| Streamlabs OBS plugin | Add Streamlabs overlays, widgets, alerts, and other tools to OBS Studio through the plugin. Streamlabs distinguishes this plugin from its all-in-one Streamlabs Desktop software. | Creators already using OBS Studio who want Streamlabs tools in that workflow. | The plugin page says the plugin is free to download and use, but some premium overlays and server-side multistreaming require Ultra. The page currently identifies Windows as the supported operating system for the plugin; verify current compatibility and plan details before committing. |

How to choose the right overlay workflow
Choose StreamElements if you want an editor-first setup
StreamElements documents a workflow in which you compose alerts, labels, goals, chat, and widgets in its Overlay Editor, then add the resulting overlay to your broadcast software as a browser source. Built-in widgets offer a no-code starting point; developers can use custom code when those widgets do not cover the required behavior. The vendor advertises customizable alerts and widgets as free, so check the current terms and the specific features you plan to use.
Choose the Streamlabs plugin if OBS is already your production hub
The OBS plugin is intended to bring Streamlabs overlays, widgets, alerts, and related tools into OBS. Its documented Windows-only support is a material constraint if you broadcast from macOS or Linux. Also distinguish the plugin from Streamlabs Desktop: they are separate workflows, and the plugin page’s statements about the plugin should not be assumed to describe every Streamlabs product.

Decide by software, customization, platform, and plan
- Broadcast software: If you already have an OBS scene setup, consider whether the plugin fits that workflow. If you prefer to compose an overlay separately and add it as a browser source, consider StreamElements.
- Customization: Determine whether built-in alerts and widgets are enough, or whether you need custom widget behavior.
- Operating system: Check that the particular integration—not just the vendor’s broader product lineup—supports your system.
- Features and cost: Check whether the exact overlays, integrations, and other features you need are included at no charge or require a paid plan.
The available official product pages describe features and terms, but do not establish that one tool produces better stream quality, uses fewer computer resources, or increases viewer engagement. Choose based on workflow and verified requirements rather than an assumed performance winner.
Where overlays fit in a broadcast setup
Your broadcast software organizes the live production: it combines sources into scenes and sends the resulting output to YouTube. An overlay is one of those visual sources. With StreamElements, the documented route is to render it through a browser source; with the Streamlabs plugin, the documented route is to import Streamlabs tools into OBS.

A 2022 peer-reviewed study by Ian Drosos and Philip J. Guo analyzed 40 YouTube setup videos to develop a design-space analysis of streaming setups. That figure describes the study’s sample, not the size of the streaming market or how common any particular overlay tool is. The study also discusses programmable controls such as Elgato Stream Deck for actions like changing OBS scenes. A Stream Deck is an optional production-control accessory, not overlay-creation software and not a requirement for either workflow. ACM DIS 2022 paper.
Setup checks and common problems
The overlay does not appear in the broadcast
- Confirm that the overlay or plugin is added to the scene or broadcast workflow you are actually using.
- For StreamElements, check that the browser source points to the intended overlay and that it is visible in the current scene.
- For the Streamlabs plugin, confirm you are using OBS Studio and that the plugin is supported on your operating system.
A widget or alert is missing
- Check whether the specific widget or integration is available in the editor or plugin workflow you chose.
- Review the vendor’s current plan terms if the feature is described as premium or tied to a paid tier.
- If a built-in widget cannot meet a particular requirement, StreamElements documents custom widget coding as an option for developers.
The chosen workflow does not match your computer or software
Recheck the integration’s current requirements rather than relying on the operating-system support of a different product from the same vendor. In particular, Streamlabs currently states Windows support for its OBS plugin. Feature availability and compatibility can change, so use the linked vendor pages to verify them before setup.

Keep the overlay useful and the broadcast readable
- Use alerts and labels to add information viewers need, not to cover the main content.
- Check the finished scene at the output size you intend to stream; an element that looks clear in an editor may be hard to read at a smaller viewing size.
- Preview alerts and scene changes in your broadcast software before going live.
- Use only visual assets and media you have permission to broadcast. An overlay tool does not grant rights to images, music, or other material you add.
Or let it run in the cloud
