Download OBS Studio from the official OBS Project website, install the build for your operating system, and use its Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting setup. Then make a simple scene, check your audio, connect YouTube with its server URL and stream key, and run a short test before your public broadcast.
Check your computer and operating system
OBS Studio is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix. OBS lists these basic requirements:
- Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU.
- macOS: macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU, and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU.
- Linux/Unix: an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland.
These are compatibility baselines, not a promise of smooth streaming. OBS cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU demands depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use the wizard and test your actual setup rather than relying on the requirements alone. See the OBS Project system requirements.
Download and install OBS safely
- Go to the official OBS Project download page.
- Choose the download offered for your operating system. Avoid third-party download sites.
- Open the downloaded installer or package and follow its prompts.
- Launch OBS Studio after installation.
Use the official download page for the current build and platform-specific instructions; installer labels and interface details can change.

How do I set up OBS for YouTube Live?
Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
On first launch, OBS may offer the Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers your intended use, available hardware resources, and—when configuring for streaming—network conditions. If you do not see it, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the option for streaming and follow the prompts. Treat the result as a starting configuration, not a guarantee; you can adjust it after testing. OBS describes the process in its Quick Start Guide.
Create a simple scene
A scene is the layout OBS sends to the stream. OBS starts with a blank scene. Add only what your broadcast needs, using the Sources panel:

- Display Capture or Window Capture: show a desktop or application; availability and behavior depend on your platform.
- Game Capture: capture a game on Windows.
- Video Capture Device: add a webcam or capture card.
- Image, text, or media: add graphics or other visual elements when needed.
For a straightforward game stream, start with the game source and any camera or overlay you actually plan to use. More sources and complex scenes can increase system demands.
Check your microphone and desktop audio
OBS captures desktop audio and a microphone by default, but the selected devices may not be the ones you intend to use. Speak into your microphone and play audio from the computer; watch the Audio Mixer meters to confirm the correct inputs respond. If they do not, open Settings → Audio and select the intended devices. Check the meters again before connecting to YouTube.

Choose webcam/mobile or encoder streaming
YouTube supports webcam, mobile, and encoder-based live streams. OBS is an encoder. YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for screen or game sharing, external audio/video hardware, and more involved production. If you only need a direct camera broadcast, YouTube’s webcam or mobile route may be simpler; use OBS when you need its scene and source controls. Where do I find my YouTube stream key?
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.
- In the Live Control Room, create or select a stream and follow the current setup flow.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open the stream settings, select YouTube as the service where available, and enter the stream key. If you need to enter the server manually, use YouTube’s server URL in the server field.
- Apply the settings, return to OBS, and start the encoder when you are ready to send the feed.
Keep your stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update OBS with the new key. Follow the current YouTube Live Control Room instructions, since labels and steps can change.

YouTube says, “Enabling a live stream for the first time may take up to 24 hours.” Enable live streaming ahead of your planned broadcast rather than waiting until just before you go live.

OBS recommends testing for a few minutes instead of jumping straight into a first stream or recording. For a scheduled broadcast, send the encoder feed and wait for its preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room; use YouTube’s Go live control when the stream is ready to be public.

- Confirm the preview shows the intended game, window, display, or camera.
- Check that microphone and desktop audio meters move, and listen for clipping, silence, or unwanted sound.
- Watch the stream preview for interruptions or visibly degraded output.
- Check that your computer remains responsive during gameplay and streaming.
Resolution and frame rate should fit what your computer and network can sustain. OBS notes that 60 FPS can be more demanding than 30 FPS; test the intended settings rather than assuming a particular resolution or frame rate will work on every system. The OBS Studio Overview Guide also recommends testing before a first broadcast.
Common first-stream problems
- You cannot start a YouTube stream: if this is your first time enabling Live, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the Live Control Room and wait for activation.
- YouTube receives no video: verify the stream key and server URL in OBS against the selected stream in YouTube Studio. If you changed the key, update OBS too.
- The preview is black or shows the wrong thing: confirm the correct scene is selected and that its source targets the intended game, window, display, camera, or capture card. Platform-dependent capture sources may behave differently.
- Viewers cannot hear you: check the Audio Mixer meters while speaking, then choose the correct microphone in Settings → Audio.
- Audio is missing or unintended: test desktop audio separately, inspect the mixer, and verify the selected output device.
- The stream stutters or the computer struggles: lower the output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or try the Auto-Configuration Wizard again. The cause may be encoder load, network conditions, or scene complexity; no single minimum specification guarantees smooth output.
