You may not need to resize your video at all: YouTube adapts its player to different video shapes and devices. For a conventional horizontal upload, use a 16:9 canvas such as 1920×1080 for 1080p. If your source is vertical, square, or another shape, decide whether to crop it or preserve the whole image before exporting.
Choose the right shape for your YouTube video
YouTube supports more than one aspect ratio. Its standard computer player ratio is 16:9, but the player adapts to the video’s shape and the viewer’s device. YouTube advises against adding permanent black bars or padding just to force a video into 16:9. YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance explains how the player handles different shapes.
- Standard landscape video: 16:9 is the usual target. YouTube lists 1920×1080 for 1080p, 1280×720 for 720p, 2560×1440 for 1440p, and 3840×2160 for 4K. See YouTube’s resolution guidance.
- Short: YouTube’s computer upload instructions accept square or vertical videos up to three minutes long. Check the current Shorts upload requirements when preparing a video, as platform rules can change.
- Other shapes: You can keep the original proportions; YouTube’s player adapts rather than requiring every upload to fill a 16:9 frame.
Resize the video in an editor
- Choose the destination. Decide whether you are making a conventional horizontal upload or a square or vertical Short. For a standard 1080p landscape video, set the project or sequence to 1920×1080; for 720p, use 1280×720. These are YouTube-listed dimensions for 16:9 video.
- Put the source footage on the canvas. If its aspect ratio differs from the project, choose how the editor should handle the mismatch. The labels vary by editor, but the options are usually some form of crop-to-fill or fit-to-frame.
- Choose crop or fit deliberately. Cropping fills the canvas but cuts off parts of the image, often at the sides or top and bottom. Check that faces, captions, game HUD elements, and other important details remain in frame. Fitting preserves the entire image, but leaves unused space around it; if you fill that space with a background, it is part of your export. Neither option is best for every video.
- Keep the recorded frame rate. YouTube says content should be encoded and uploaded at the frame rate at which it was recorded. Its listed common frame rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations provide the full guidance.
- Export with suitable encoding. YouTube recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan, and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. For SDR video, the recommended color space is BT.709. Follow a different workflow if you are exporting HDR; the SDR bitrate figures below are not universal HDR settings.
- Upload the exported file. In YouTube Studio, sign in, select Create, then Upload videos, and choose the file. YouTube converts uploads for playback at the highest resolution available across devices and network conditions. HD and 4K processing can take longer than lower-resolution processing. See the upload instructions.
Use YouTube’s bitrate figures as references, not limits
YouTube’s recommendations give these SDR reference bitrates for standard frame-rate categories. They are recommendations, not a mandatory upload cap; do not apply them as universal settings to HDR exports.
| Export | YouTube’s SDR reference bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
For other resolutions, frame rates, or encoding details, consult YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings. A higher-resolution export does not restore detail absent from the source, and larger files can take longer to upload and process.

Fix common resizing problems
- Important content is missing: the editor is cropping to fill. Reposition the footage, widen the crop if possible, or fit the whole image instead.
- There is empty space around the image: the editor is fitting the source to the canvas. Keep the full image and choose a background treatment if you want to fill the space; do not add bars solely to satisfy YouTube.
- The uploaded video looks soft: check that the export dimensions do not exceed what the source can support and that you did not accidentally export at a lower resolution. Upscaling cannot recreate detail that was never recorded.
- Only a lower playback resolution is available just after upload: YouTube may still be processing higher-quality versions. Allow time for HD or 4K processing to finish.
- Motion looks different after export: verify that the output frame rate matches the recorded footage, as YouTube recommends.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the resized video is meant to play continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream uses your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
