Plan one useful video, upload it through YouTube Studio, check its details and visibility, then publish when you are ready. You do not need a new camera or a monetization plan before you begin.
How do I start a YouTube video blog?
- Choose a viewer and a recurring subject. Decide who you want to reach and what they can expect from your videos. For a video-game blog, that might mean documenting a playthrough, explaining how you approach a particular game, or sharing considered impressions. These are possible editorial directions, not YouTube requirements. A focused premise makes it easier for a new viewer to understand why another installment might interest them.
- Create a YouTube channel. A Google Account lets you use some YouTube features, but uploading videos requires a channel. YouTube’s setup guide offers a personal channel or a channel using a business or other name; the latter can use a Brand Account and have multiple managers or owners. See YouTube’s channel-creation instructions.
- Plan a manageable first video. Write down the one thing a viewer should get from it. A practical structure is a direct opening, the main point or demonstration, and a concise close. You do not need a complicated script; a short outline can help keep the recording focused.
- Record with what you have. YouTube’s upload tips say, “There is no need for fancy equipment, what you have at hand will do.” If you have a smartphone or another device that can record the video you need, start there. An upgrade is optional, not a prerequisite.
- Upload, review, and publish deliberately. Follow the upload steps below. For an early test or a video you are not ready to share publicly, choose private or unlisted visibility rather than publishing it immediately.
- Choose a repeatable format. Decide whether each idea works best as a Short or a longer video, then use a process you can sustain. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universally best format or posting schedule.
What equipment do I need to start vlogging?
For a basic start, use a device you already have that can record the kind of video you intend to make. YouTube describes making Shorts with a smartphone and explicitly says fancy equipment is not necessary. Optional accessories such as a tripod or external microphone may suit particular filming setups, but neither is established as a requirement by YouTube’s creator guidance.
For a gaming video, first decide what the viewer needs to see and hear: gameplay, your commentary, or both. The official guidance covered here does not prescribe a gaming capture setup, software, microphone, or editing program, so choose a workflow based on your equipment and the result you want rather than treating a specific purchase as mandatory.
How do I upload my first YouTube video?
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Upload videos.
- Select the video file and enter its details, including a title and description.
- Review the details and select the visibility that matches your plan. Choose private or unlisted if you want to check the video before making it public.
- Complete the upload and publication choices shown in Studio. Uploading imports the file; publishing makes it available to viewers. Treat them as separate decisions.
YouTube’s upload instructions describe the Studio workflow. Its beginner upload tips also explain the basics. Check the selected visibility before finishing: a successful upload does not by itself mean you intended to release the video publicly.

Should I make Shorts or long videos?
Choose based on the idea, the amount of explanation it needs, and the time you can spend making it. A self-contained moment or brief idea may suit a Short; a topic that needs context, a fuller demonstration, or a longer discussion may suit a longer video. Neither format is universally better, and YouTube’s guidance does not establish a best posting cadence.
| Consideration | Shorts | Longer videos |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit for the idea | A short, self-contained moment or thought | A subject that needs more explanation or demonstration |
| Making the video | Can be created with a smartphone in the YouTube app or uploaded as an eligible vertical video | Choose a length and production approach that serve the subject; the cited guidance does not set a universal ideal |
| Where viewers may find it | Shorts Feed, search, homepage, subscriptions, notifications, and a channel homepage | Do not assume one discovery route guarantees viewers; the cited material does not establish a universal distribution strategy |
| Metric to understand | Use Engaged views when comparing viewers who chose to continue watching; total views use a different definition | Use the relevant YouTube Analytics measures for the question you are asking |
Shorts length, format, and views
YouTube’s Shorts creation guide describes Shorts as up to three minutes long. It says creators can record in the YouTube app or upload an eligible vertical video, and that Shorts uploads are limited to a maximum resolution of 1080p. Check the current guide for the applicable format requirements before exporting or uploading.

As of YouTube’s change on March 31, 2025, a Short view counts when it starts or replays, without a minimum watch-time requirement. Engaged views remain in Analytics as a way to compare viewers who chose to keep watching; YouTube says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing continue to use Engaged Shorts views. Do not treat the total view count and Engaged views as interchangeable measures.
How do I make a video blog viewers can follow?
Give each video a clear purpose and make the recurring premise understandable to someone arriving for the first time. For a game-focused channel, you might choose a specific recurring angle—such as a particular game or kind of commentary—rather than assuming every viewer already knows the context. Keep the opening direct, deliver the promised point or demonstration, and close without extending the video after its useful material is finished.

After publishing, review performance in Analytics using a measure that suits the format. For Shorts, distinguish Engaged views from total views because their definitions differ. The official guidance does not establish a guaranteed algorithm strategy, an ideal upload frequency, or a formula for success, so treat early results as information for deciding what to make next—not as a promise of future reach.
What should I know about copyright and monetization policies?
Use original material or material for which you have the necessary rights. Giving credit by itself does not establish permission. YouTube says monetization requires compliance with its channel monetization policies, including Community Guidelines, copyright, and advertiser-friendly rules. Its Shorts policy gives non-original reuploads and artificial or fake views as examples of ineligible Engaged views. A particular use of a song, clip, or other asset cannot be cleared by a general rule in this article; check the applicable rights and current YouTube terms for the material you plan to use.

How many subscribers do I need to monetize on YouTube?
YouTube describes an earlier-access tier and a higher threshold for Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue. These are eligibility requirements, not guaranteed earnings. They are subject to country or region availability, account requirements, policy compliance, and review. Apply through the Earn area in YouTube Studio when eligible; YouTube reviews channels for policy compliance.
| Eligibility tier | Threshold described by YouTube | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier access to fan funding and Shopping features | 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | Earlier access to eligible features, subject to regional availability, policy compliance, account requirements, and applicable terms |
| Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | The higher threshold for these revenue features; it does not promise a particular income |
These thresholds are from YouTube’s YouTube Partner Program eligibility guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. YouTube also lists channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping among possible earning features; availability, eligibility, and terms vary by feature and region. A new creator should not plan on immediate ad revenue.

Or let it run in the cloud
A video blog usually means publishing individual videos, not running a continuous live stream. If you also want uploaded recordings to play as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the cloud stream to run.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
For a regular video blog, continue uploading individual videos through YouTube Studio. To try a continuous stream of your uploaded recordings, start with StreamNeo’s free first day.
