To stream HDR on YouTube, start with a genuine HDR source and use a compatible hardware encoder configured for HEVC (H.265), 10-bit Main 10, and the matching HDR color settings. YouTube’s current Live HDR instructions specify OBS 30.1 or later, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. You can ingest over RTMP(S) or HLS; the right choice depends on what your encoder supports.
What you need for YouTube Live HDR
HDR is an end-to-end signal, not a setting that can turn ordinary SDR footage into HDR. Your game or camera must produce HDR, and the encoder must preserve the source’s color information when sending it to YouTube. YouTube currently documents HEVC (H.265) for Live HDR; do not assume the VP9 Profile 2, AV1, or HEVC options mentioned in YouTube’s separate upload guidance apply to live streams. YouTube’s Live HDR instructions cover the live workflow.
- For game capture: Use a game that outputs HDR, enable HDR in the game and operating system as appropriate, and use an HDR-capable monitor or TV to check the source.
- For camera video: Use a camera that records or outputs HDR with PQ or HLG. Check the camera documentation for the actual format and transfer function.
- For encoding: Use an HEVC-capable hardware encoder with 10-bit HDR support. For OBS, YouTube specifies OBS 30.1 or later.
- For verification: Use an HDR-capable playback device and display. The Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors.
YouTube’s general live eligibility rules also apply: before a first broadcast, a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. These are not HDR-specific requirements. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
How to configure OBS for HDR
- Confirm the source is HDR. For a game, enable the game’s HDR output and make sure the capture path carries it. For a camera, verify that it outputs PQ or HLG HDR. Keep the source’s actual transfer function in mind throughout setup.
- Use a supported OBS and encoder. Install OBS 30.1 or later and select a hardware HEVC encoder that supports 10-bit HDR output.
- Select YouTube’s ingest protocol. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and choose YouTube RTMPS for the RTMP workflow. YouTube also documents an HLS workflow; choose YouTube HLS if your encoder and setup use it.
- Set the video encoder. Go to Settings → Output → Encoder, select the hardware HEVC encoder, and set its profile to Main 10.
- Set HDR color output. In Settings → Advanced, enable HDR, set Color Format to P010 (4:2:0), and choose Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG to match the source. YouTube recommends HLG, but do not change a PQ source to HLG merely to follow that preference.
- Check YouTube’s stream settings. In Live Control Room, leave Turn on manual resolution unchecked. If you selected HLS, make sure the stream key’s protocol is set to HLS.
- Start the stream and verify playback. Check the resulting stream on an HDR-capable device rather than judging its color from the Live Control Room preview.
These OBS labels and requirements are from YouTube’s current help guidance and can change with software versions. If a setting is missing, check that OBS and the hardware encoder support the selected HDR workflow.

Choosing RTMP(S) or HLS
YouTube documents both RTMP(S) and HLS for Live HDR. Its general encoder guidance recommends RTMPS in general and identifies H.265 over RTMP(S) as an HDR option. HLS can be appropriate when an encoder does not support the needed RTMP capabilities, but it sends video in segments and has higher latency—an important trade-off for interactive gaming streams. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Hardware HLS requirements
If using a hardware encoder’s HLS workflow, YouTube specifies the following. Match the signaling to the source and the encoder manufacturer’s terminology:

Bitrate, resolution, and keyframes
HDR support does not remove the need to match your encoder’s output to the source and the capabilities of your connection. YouTube’s general encoder-settings page contains its recommended live settings and bitrates; consult it for the resolution and bitrate you plan to send rather than copying a value from an unrelated setup. This HDR guidance does not establish a single bitrate or keyframe interval for every source, resolution, and encoder.

For this workflow, the specific YouTube Live HDR instruction is to leave Turn on manual resolution unchecked. Preserve HDR signaling—10-bit video, the correct BT.2020 primaries and matrix, and the source-matching PQ or HLG transfer function—rather than forcing metadata that does not describe the signal.
How to tell whether the live stream is really HDR
- Open the live stream on a device and display that support HDR.
- Open the playback quality menu and look for the HDR label.
- If the label is absent, check the source, HEVC encoder, 10-bit/Main 10 output, color format, color space, and the device’s HDR support.
YouTube serves SDR to viewers whose devices do not support HDR, so different viewers may see different versions of the same stream. A preview that appears SDR in Live Control Room is not by itself evidence of a failed HDR stream: YouTube says that preview does not display HDR colors. The relevant check is playback on a supported HDR device.

Troubleshooting HDR streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No HDR label during playback | The source is SDR, the encode is not HEVC/10-bit HDR, or the playback setup does not support HDR. | Confirm the game or camera outputs HDR; check the hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 format, matching PQ or HLG, and the playback display. |
| Washed-out, distorted, or incorrect colors | The transfer function, primaries, or matrix does not match the source, or SDR footage has been mislabeled as HDR. | Match PQ or HLG and BT.2020 signaling to the actual source. YouTube warns in its separate HDR upload guidance that incorrect HDR metadata can badly distort footage; the same principle applies to a live signal. |
| Live Control Room preview looks like SDR | This is expected behavior; the preview does not display HDR colors. | Verify with playback on an HDR-capable device and check the quality menu for the HDR label. |
| Some viewers see SDR | Their playback devices or displays do not support HDR. | That is normal: YouTube serves SDR to viewers on non-HDR devices. |
| HLS encoder rejects the stream | The stream key or HLS transport settings may not meet YouTube’s requirements. | Use an HLS-protocol key; check MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, at most five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. |
