To add a widget, use the URL supplied by its provider: add it as a Browser source in OBS Studio or a Webpage source in XSplit Broadcaster, then size and layer it in your scene. XSplit also offers some built-in platform widgets. The steps below cover both approaches and how to fix common display problems.
Before you add a widget
Get the widget or overlay URL from its provider first. Providers may call it an “Overlay URL,” “Widget URL,” or “Alert URL.” If the provider supplies a locally saved webpage instead, both OBS Browser Source and XSplit Webpage can load local pages. A URL-based widget is a webpage displayed inside your scene; it is not the same as a platform-specific widget built into XSplit.
Choose the scene or layout where the widget should appear. If it is meant to sit over gameplay or a camera, make sure the scene already contains those sources so you can position and layer the widget against them.
Add a widget in OBS Studio
- Select the scene. In OBS, click the scene that should contain the widget.
- Add a Browser source. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Browser. Give the source a recognizable name if prompted.
- Enter the widget page. In the source properties, paste the provider’s URL into the URL field. To load a local page instead, enable Local file and select the file. OBS documents a default Browser Source viewport of 800 by 600 pixels; set the width and height to match the widget’s intended canvas or the space it needs in your scene. OBS Browser Source documentation
- Save and place it. Click OK, then drag the source in the preview to position it. Resize it using the handles, or right-click the source and choose Transform > Edit Transform for precise values. OBS sources guide
- Set the layer order. In the Sources list, move the widget above the sources it should cover. A source higher in the list appears on top of sources beneath it. If the widget disappears behind gameplay or a camera, move it higher.
- Refresh if needed. If the page is stale or has not updated, open the Browser source properties and use the cache-refresh control.
OBS describes Browser Source as a way to add webpages to a scene and notes its use for alert overlays and chat boxes. Its official alert tutorial demonstrates adding a provider URL as a Browser source; the described workflow does not require an OBS plugin. Browser Source · OBS alert sources tutorial

Add a widget in XSplit Broadcaster
- Select the scene or layout. Choose the layout where the widget belongs.
- Add a Webpage source. Choose Add Source > Webpage, enter the widget URL, and confirm. To use a saved webpage, browse to its local file instead. XSplit Webpage source documentation
- Adjust webpage display options. Configure the screen area, transparency, and scrollbar visibility to suit the widget. The Webpage source also has a 60 FPS option; XSplit says this uses more CPU and GPU resources, so enable it only if the widget’s motion needs it and your system can handle the extra load.
- Arrange it on the stage. Resize and position the source on the canvas so it fits the scene and does not obscure other content. XSplit’s getting-started guide covers adding sources manually and arranging them on the canvas. XSplit Broadcaster getting-started guide
Use an XSplit platform widget when available
Open Add Source to check available platform-specific widget categories, which XSplit documents for Facebook Live, Twitch, and YouTube Live. Availability may depend on the installed plugins and can change. XSplit’s Twitch guide says its Twitch widgets are not pre-installed: install them through the Plugin Store. The Twitch setup includes account authorization for alerts and account or channel connection for chat features. XSplit platform widgets · XSplit Twitch widgets
Choose the right source type
| What you want to add | OBS Studio | XSplit Broadcaster |
|---|---|---|
| A provider’s hosted alert, chat, or overlay page | Browser source with the provider URL | Webpage source with the provider URL |
| A locally saved webpage | Browser source with Local file enabled | Webpage source pointed to the saved page |
| A platform-specific built-in widget | The cited OBS alert workflow uses a provider URL and does not require a plugin | Check Add Source and the Plugin Store; Twitch widgets require Plugin Store installation |
Use the provider’s URL when you want its hosted widget and settings. In XSplit, a built-in widget may be more convenient when the platform integration you need is available and installed. OBS’s official tutorial names Streamlabs alerts and overlays and StreamElements widgets as provider examples. OBS alert sources tutorial

Size and layer the widget cleanly
- Match the source canvas to the widget. Use the dimensions recommended by the widget provider where available. In OBS, width and height set the Browser Source viewport; the default is 800 by 600 pixels. In XSplit, adjust the Webpage display area and then size the source on the stage.
- Keep overlays above what they annotate. In OBS, check the Sources list order. In either program, inspect the preview or stage after moving a source to confirm that it is visible and does not cover an important element.
- Check transparency and scrollbars. A widget page may include transparent space around its content. In XSplit, use the Webpage source’s transparency and scrollbar settings if the page background or scrollbars show unexpectedly.
- Preview the result before going live. Trigger or preview the widget using the provider’s own controls if available, then verify its position and scale in the scene.
Troubleshoot a widget that does not appear correctly
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Blank or missing widget | Incorrect URL, source not saved, or local page not selected correctly | Re-copy the provider URL into the source properties. For a local page, confirm the file selection. In OBS, click OK after editing properties. |
| Widget appears behind gameplay or camera | Source is lower in the layer order | In OBS, move it higher in the Sources list. In XSplit, arrange the source on the stage so it sits above the elements it should overlay. |
| Widget is cropped, too large, or too small | Viewport or stage dimensions do not fit the widget | Set the OBS Browser Source width and height to the provider’s recommended dimensions, then resize or use Transform > Edit Transform. In XSplit, adjust the webpage screen area and canvas size. |
| Old content remains visible | Browser page cache or widget page has not refreshed | Use the refresh-cache control in OBS Browser Source properties. If the provider’s page itself has not updated, check its own widget settings. |
| Unexpected background or scrollbar | Page transparency or scroll behavior does not suit the overlay | Review the widget provider’s page settings and, in XSplit, adjust transparency and scrollbar visibility. |
| Webpage animation affects performance | XSplit’s 60 FPS webpage option can require more CPU and GPU resources | Disable the 60 FPS option if the widget does not need it, then check whether performance improves. |
| Twitch widget is unavailable in XSplit | The widget is not pre-installed | Install the Twitch widget through the Plugin Store, then complete the account authorization or connection required for the feature. |
