Then send the command and its options to your chatbot logic and return a valid interaction response. You do not need a dedicated device, and slash commands do not require reading every server message.
1. Create a Discord application and protect its credentials

Open the Discord Developer Portal and create an application. In the app’s General Information page, note its Application ID and Public Key.

On the Bot page, create or configure a bot user if your implementation needs one. Treat the bot token as a secret: it authorizes API requests. Store it in a protected environment variable or secret store, and do not share it or commit it to version control. Discord’s first-bot quick-start explains where to find these values and how they are used.
2. Decide whether your app needs a bot user
A bot user is appropriate when the chatbot needs a member-like presence in a server or needs to connect to the Gateway. If it only needs to receive application-command interactions, it may be possible to authorize it with the applications.commands scope without a bot user. Discord includes that scope by default when requesting the bot scope. Choose installation scopes and permissions to match the features you will actually use; do not request Administrator as a shortcut. Check Discord’s current OAuth2 guidance and application-command documentation before creating an install link.

3. Register a slash command
Application commands are registered through Discord’s HTTP API. A slash command is a CHAT_INPUT command with a name and description; you can add typed options for inputs such as a question or a setting. Discord’s quick-start demonstrates registration with npm run register, but Node.js is not required: adapt the registration call and runtime to your chosen language or library.

Register a guild-scoped command for the server where you are developing. Discord says guild commands update instantly, making them useful for testing.

When the command is ready for wider availability, register it globally. Global and guild registration are separate scope choices; the latter is convenient for development, while the former serves broader use. See Discord’s command registration documentation for current endpoints and details.

4. Choose how Discord delivers interactions
For a given app, choose exactly one interaction-delivery route. Discord does not deliver interactions to the app through both the Gateway and an outgoing webhook at the same time.

Use the HTTP option when a public request-and-response endpoint fits your deployment. Use the Gateway when your bot needs Gateway events or your implementation is built around a bot-client library. Discord’s interaction delivery guide and Gateway documentation describe the two routes and their requirements.
5. Connect the command to your chatbot logic

Receive the interaction through your selected route and parse the command name and supplied option values.

Pass those values to your chatbot’s response logic. Discord handles command registration and delivery; the reply-generation logic is yours and may use rules, a model, or another service.

Return a valid interaction response to Discord. For the HTTP route, also ensure requests are verified before processing them; for the Gateway route, use the interaction response flow supported by your client or library.

Keep Discord connectivity separate from the reply engine: a model API is not required to connect a slash command, and Discord’s command setup does not dictate which chatbot technology you use.

6. Request only the data and permissions the bot needs
A slash command is an explicit invocation, so it does not require the bot to read arbitrary ordinary server messages. If you build text-command behavior that scans messages, message-content access may be relevant and is subject to Discord’s privileged-data rules. Gateway event access is controlled by intents; request only the event groups needed for the bot’s actual features.
Discord’s June 10, 2026 announcement says apps with 10,000 or more total users need review to retain access to certain server data, and continued access requires annual reapplication. Discord says the change affects how and when developers apply for access, not what data is available. These rules concern access to certain user data; check the current Developer Portal settings and Discord policy for your app before launch. See Discord’s announcement.
Do you need special hardware or hosting?
No dedicated physical product is required by Discord’s documented setup. You need development software and infrastructure suited to the route you choose: for example, a reachable HTTPS endpoint for webhooks or a process that can maintain a Gateway connection. Hosting is an implementation choice, not a special Discord device requirement.
