Before changing or replacing local source files, make a Google Takeout export of the YouTube videos uploaded to your channel, download and inspect the archive, and keep a safe second copy. Back up the playlist’s identity and order separately: saving a playlist to your YouTube library does not, according to YouTube’s help pages, create a local video backup or downloadable playlist manifest.
Back up your uploaded videos with Google Takeout
- Sign in to the right Google account. Use the account associated with the channel that uploaded the videos. If the export seems to be missing uploads, check whether the channel is linked to a Brand Account and switch to the Brand Account used to upload them. Google Takeout help
- Request an export of YouTube data. In Google Takeout, select YouTube data; deselect unrelated products if you want a smaller archive. Choose a delivery method and request the archive. Google describes email download links and cloud destinations including Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive. Export creation may not include changes made after you request the export but before Google creates the archive.
- Download and inspect the archive before editing files. YouTube videos may be exported in their original format or as MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC audio. On a desktop, open
archive_browser.htmlto review the archive’s contents and format, then confirm that the expected recordings are present. - Keep the export somewhere safe. Choose a storage location with enough space. Google says downloading directly to a computer is easiest in most cases; an external drive can be an additional copy. Keep the archive until you have verified the files you need.
Record the playlist and its order separately
Before changing source files, preserve the playlist’s title and URL, then record each video URL in the order shown. Add brief notes if needed to identify entries. This gives you a reference for rebuilding the playlist if its contents or order change.
YouTube’s playlist help describes saving a playlist to your library so you can find it more easily within YouTube. Its playlist management help covers managing and reordering playlists. The cited help pages do not describe a local playlist-manifest export, so do not treat “Save playlist” as a backup of the video files or their ordered list.
Choose the right backup method

Use YouTube Studio for a single-video download
- Open YouTube Studio for the account that uploaded the video.
- Go to Content and find the video.
- Open the video’s menu and choose the download option.
- Check the downloaded MP4 and compare it with the version you need to preserve. YouTube documents a 720p or 360p download depending on video size; do not assume this is the original source file. YouTube’s video download help
Know when a Studio download may not be available
YouTube says its Studio download feature does not download videos uploaded by other users. A download may also be unavailable if the video was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a preapproved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times in the preceding 24 hours. For your own channel’s bulk preservation, use Takeout and check the resulting archive rather than relying on Studio downloads alone.
