How to Add Text-to-Speech for Donations During a Live Stream

Make donation messages speak on stream: connect the right tipping service, enable TTS on its tip alert, add the alert to OBS, and test audio and moderation.

To make donation messages speak during a live stream, enable text-to-speech (TTS) on your tipping service’s tip alert, add that service’s alert widget or overlay to the scene in your streaming software, and test both the alert and its audio before going live. Dashboard labels vary by provider; the steps below cover Streamlabs and StreamElements.

Before you configure donation TTS

Streaming dashboards often call donations “tips.” TTS reads a viewer’s submitted message aloud when the associated tip alert fires. The alert must be enabled for the tip event, and its Alert Box or overlay must be present in the scene you are broadcasting. Streamlabs describes the result this way: “When Text-to-Speech is enabled, your viewers will hear their message live on stream when they send a tip.” (Streamlabs support guide.)

  • Confirm which tipping page and alert service your viewers use; configuring a different provider will not connect its tips to your stream.
  • Have access to that service’s dashboard and the scene in your streaming software, such as OBS.
  • Decide whether messages should be read immediately, only above a minimum amount, or after review, depending on the controls the provider offers.

You do not need a special microphone, capture card, headset, or stream controller just to configure alert TTS. The documented workflows use service settings and a software alert source.

Set up donation TTS with Streamlabs

  1. Add the alert to your streaming scene. In OBS, add the Streamlabs Alert Box as a Browser Source using its widget URL. In Streamlabs Desktop or the Streamlabs OBS plugin, use the native Alert Box source. Make sure it is in the scene that will be live. See the Streamlabs alert setup guide.
  2. Open the tip alert settings. Sign in at Streamlabs.com, open Alert Box, select Tips (or Bits, if you want TTS for Bits), and open Text-to-Speech.
  3. Choose when and how messages are read. Set a minimum tip amount if you want a threshold, select a voice, and turn on TTS for that event. Streamlabs’ guide dated November 5, 2025 says it offered over 50 voices, including multiple languages; that is the vendor’s feature count in that guide and may change.
  4. Set message safeguards. Configure the spam filter; Streamlabs says it is off by default and recommends starting at Low or Medium. Its alert settings also offer default and custom profanity filters, with options to replace, hide, or suppress alerts containing blocked words. Test the setting with realistic messages so legitimate tips are not unnecessarily suppressed.
  5. Save and test. Use the dashboard’s test dropdown, Live Preview, or the software’s test widgets. Check that the visual alert appears and that the spoken message is audible in the stream mix.

Streamlabs says its core Alert Box is free; its guide mentions Ultra as an optional way to access a larger theme library, not a requirement for enabling donation TTS.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up donation TTS with StreamElements

  1. Connect tipping. Configure the tipping page and provider in StreamElements first. Its documentation names PayPal and SE.Pay; availability may depend on the provider’s eligibility and country rules. Check your own account’s options rather than assuming a payment method is available everywhere. See StreamElements tipping setup.
  2. Open or create an overlay. In the StreamElements overlay editor, add or edit an AlertBox widget. If the overlay is separate from your streaming application, add its overlay URL to OBS as a Browser Source. Follow the service’s alert instructions.
  3. Enable TTS for tip alerts. Open the tip alert’s settings, find TTS, enable it, and choose a voice. Check alert variations as well as the base alert: a variation may override the main configuration.
  4. Configure controls and test. Set the available tip limits, message length, and moderation options. StreamElements documents profanity protection, custom message filters, repeated-character TTS anti-spam, and optional manual approval. Run a test in the dashboard and in your streaming application.

The StreamElements alert guide focuses on Twitch and describes the process for other platforms as broadly similar. Do not assume every platform has identical menu labels or settings; check the controls for the platform and account you use.

Choose the workflow that matches your setup

If you already use a tipping page and alert provider, start there so payment, message, and alert settings remain connected. If you are choosing between the documented options, compare the practical differences:

What to check Streamlabs StreamElements
How the alert reaches OBS Browser Source using the Alert Box widget URL; native Alert Box source is also documented for Streamlabs Desktop or the Streamlabs OBS plugin. Overlay URL added as a Browser Source when the overlay is separate.
Tip TTS controls documented Tip or Bits event, minimum amount, voice, spam filter, and profanity controls. Tip-alert TTS and voice, alert variations, provider settings, message limits, and moderation controls.
Payment setup Use the Streamlabs tipping page and verify the alert is linked to the page viewers will use. PayPal and SE.Pay are named options; eligibility and availability can vary.
Cost information in the cited setup documentation The core Alert Box is described as free; Ultra is optional for a larger theme library. Not stated in the cited alert and tipping setup guides.

Streamlabs documents both a native source for its own desktop setup and a browser-source route for other streaming software. StreamElements uses an overlay workflow in OBS. The most important choice is the service your actual tipping page uses, not a preference for one alert style.

Moderate donor messages before they reach your audience

TTS turns user-submitted text into live audio. A message can be offensive, disruptive, or crafted to overwhelm the stream, so moderation belongs in the initial setup—not as a cleanup task after an incident.

  • Consider manual approval for tips with freeform messages if you want to review text before it is spoken.
  • Set sensible message-length limits where offered, then test the effect on both speech and on-screen alerts.

StreamElements says filtered tip events remain in the activity feed but do not trigger an alert, and that tip moderation settings do not affect fund transfers. See its tip moderation guide.

Test the alert and its audio in the actual stream setup

  1. Save the provider settings after changing TTS, voice, threshold, or moderation options.
  2. Trigger a test alert from the service dashboard or its test widgets while the correct streaming scene is active.
  3. Verify the picture: confirm the alert appears in the intended scene and does not sit behind another source or outside the visible canvas.
  4. Verify the sound: listen to the stream mix, not just the dashboard preview. The browser source can appear correctly while its audio is routed or monitored incorrectly.
  5. Check a message with filtering enabled to confirm the result matches your moderation policy.

For OBS audio issues, StreamElements’ troubleshooting guide covers selected audio devices and browser-source audio controls and monitoring: OBS Studio troubleshooting.

Troubleshoot donation TTS that does not work

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No alert appears The alert source is missing from the active scene, the wrong overlay or widget URL is loaded, or settings were not saved. Confirm the right Alert Box or overlay is in the live scene, save the dashboard changes, then reload the browser source or overlay.
The visual alert appears but no speech is heard TTS may be off for the tip event, or browser-source audio may not be included in the stream mix. Check the tip-event TTS toggle and test the browser-source audio routing, selected device, and monitoring in your streaming software.
Some messages speak and others do not A minimum threshold, filter, manual approval setting, or alert variation may apply. Review the tip amount, moderation result, approval state, and the specific variation’s settings.
Tips do not trigger the alert The tipping provider or page may not be connected to the alert service you configured. Confirm the payment page viewers use and verify that it is connected to the same service and account as the alert.
Speech is cut off or disruptive Message length, spam handling, or alert timing may need adjustment. Use available maximum-length and anti-spam controls, adjust alert behavior, and test with representative messages before going live.
StreamElements alerts are unexpectedly silent or absent The alert may be muted or paused in the activity feed, or the overlay may need refreshing. Check mute and pause state in the activity feed, verify the overlay URL, and reload the overlay.
