To translate a YouTube video, choose what viewers need: translated titles and descriptions, captions in another language, or translated spoken audio. YouTube Studio handles each separately. Set the video’s original language first, then add the text or audio option that fits your audience and the tools available to your channel.
Choose what to translate
Metadata, captions, and dubbed audio solve different problems. You can use more than one on the same video.
| Option | What viewers get | What you need to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Translated title and description | Video information in another language; translated metadata can be searchable by viewers using that language. | Your translated title and description. |
| Captions or subtitles | On-screen text representing speech, useful for language access and accessibility. | A subtitle track, or YouTube-generated captions for an eligible original spoken language that you check for errors. |
| Automatic dubbing | A generated translated audio track for eligible videos and language pairs. | Review of YouTube’s generated track where accuracy matters. |
| Uploaded multi-language audio | A creator-prepared alternate spoken-language track. | A recorded or professionally produced dub and access to the feature. |
Set the video’s original language
Before relying on captions or automatic dubbing, check the original-language setting. YouTube uses it in caption and translation workflows; an incorrect setting can affect generated results. See YouTube’s instructions for changing the language of an uploaded video.
Translate the title and description
- Open YouTube Studio and select Subtitles.
- Select the video you want to localize.
- Choose Add language and select the target language.
- Under Title and description, add the translated title and description.
- Publish the translation.
YouTube says translated titles and descriptions can appear in search for viewers using those translations. Treat this as a discoverability opportunity, not a promise of higher ranking, views, or watch time. See YouTube’s title and description translation guidance.

Add captions or subtitles
Captions make spoken content readable and can help viewers who do not understand the audio, as well as deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. YouTube may automatically create captions for the original spoken language. For a translated text track, prepare the translation and add it through the video’s language and subtitle controls in Studio.
- Verify that the original video language is correct before working with caption and translation tools.
- Review automatic captions and translated text, especially names, specialist terms, idioms, and phrases where a small error changes the meaning.
- Use captions when the goal is readable text; use dubbed audio when viewers need to hear the speech in another language.
YouTube’s help pages describe caption and language workflows, but do not provide universal accuracy benchmarks or cost estimates for translation. For current Studio steps, consult YouTube’s translation guidance.

Use automatic dubbing when the video is eligible
Automatic dubbing generates translated audio tracks for eligible creators and videos. YouTube says the feature is enabled by default for eligible creators; some channels may have an early-access control if it is not enabled. You can choose whether generated dubs publish automatically or require manual review. On a computer, Studio lets you preview, publish, unpublish, or delete generated tracks.
Check language and video eligibility
Availability is not universal. A video may not qualify if it is over 120 minutes, contains little or no speech, uses an unsupported or undetected source language, has speech pacing that prevents dubbing, or has a copyright claim. Language availability can vary, and YouTube’s support changes over time. Check the individual video’s Languages view in Studio for available and experimental languages rather than relying on a fixed list. Details are in YouTube’s automatic dubbing help.

Review the generated track
Generated audio can mispronounce names or handle accents, dialects, background noise, idioms, jargon, and speech recognition imperfectly. Preview it before publication, and use manual review when accuracy matters. YouTube says automatic dubs cannot be edited. If the original video language was set incorrectly, correcting it can lead to regenerated dubs; this is not a way to directly edit the generated audio.
Upload a creator-prepared audio track
Multi-language audio is different from automatic dubbing: YouTube does not create the uploaded dub. You or a localization provider must prepare and record the audio. The feature is available to creators with access to Advanced features, and access or rollout may vary.

- Prepare an audio-only track in the target language for a new or existing video.
- In YouTube Studio, add the language to the video and upload the supported audio file.
- Review and publish the track.
If an automatic dub already exists in the same language, YouTube says you must delete it before uploading your replacement track. Check the current feature instructions at YouTube’s multi-language features help page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right workflow
- Translate metadata if you want localized titles and descriptions without changing the video’s sound or adding on-screen text.
- Add captions if viewers need readable speech, accessibility support, or a text translation while the original audio remains.
- Try automatic dubbing if the video and language pair are eligible and you can review the generated result.
- Upload prepared audio if you need editorial control over the spoken translation and have access to the feature and a suitable recording.
These options differ in access, language availability, review needs, and production effort. YouTube does not publish a universal comparative accuracy benchmark or cost estimate for them. Viewers can set preferred languages for audio, titles, and descriptions, and switch among available audio tracks in the player; language signals help YouTube match content to viewers, but the selected version may not follow only the viewer’s primary language setting. See YouTube’s guidance for watching videos in a preferred language.
