Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →OBS Studio is the best starting point for most creators who want a flexible, free desktop encoder for YouTube Live. Choose Streamlabs if its YouTube-focused overlays, widgets, or alerts suit your production; consider XSplit Broadcaster if you use Windows and want its scene-based production and recording features. The right choice depends on your operating system, production setup, desired features, and budget—not on a universal performance winner.
These are encoder options for producing a live broadcast. If your goal is instead to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running around the clock while your computer is off, see the cloud option below; that is a different job from running a desktop encoder.
Which YouTube Live software fits your setup?
| Software | Best fit | Platform or workflow notes | Cost notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Creators seeking a flexible, no-charge desktop encoder with extensibility. | Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix subject to its stated system requirements. Supports plugins and scripts. | OBS is open-source software; the cited material does not state a paid tier. |
| Streamlabs | Creators who want YouTube-facing overlays, widgets, or alerts in a Streamlabs workflow. | Streamlabs lists Desktop, OBS Plugin, Mobile, Console, and Talk Studio as YouTube options. Features and multistreaming entitlements vary by product and plan. | Detailed current prices are not established here; check the exact product and plan. |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Windows creators who want scene-based production and recording features, including custom RTMP and multiple outputs. | Windows software. The product page describes NVIDIA NVENC use where available and simultaneous multistreaming with a Premium License. | XSplit’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, listed free use up to 720p without a watermark, plus paid options; see the price qualification below. |
YouTube lists OBS, Streamlabs, and XSplit among its software encoder choices, and notes that listed encoder products are not made by YouTube. Encoders are useful for screen or gameplay sharing, external audio/video hardware, and productions with multiple cameras or microphones. YouTube also supports webcam and mobile approaches, so desktop encoder software is not required for every kind of live stream.
OBS Studio: a flexible free starting point
Why choose OBS
OBS is open-source software for recording and live streaming. Its project supports plugins and scripts, including Lua and Python scripts, which makes it a strong candidate if you want to shape a desktop workflow around your scenes and sources. YouTube lists OBS as a verified software encoder.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check compatibility before building a production
- Windows: OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU.
- macOS: OBS lists macOS 11 or later, on Intel or Apple Silicon, with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU.
- Linux/Unix: OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland.
These are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that a particular stream will run successfully. CPU needs vary with the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help find settings for your machine, but you should still check the result in the actual production you plan to broadcast.
Streamlabs: integrated YouTube widgets and alerts
Streamlabs lists several distinct ways to stream to YouTube: Desktop, its OBS Plugin, Mobile, Console, and Talk Studio. Its YouTube-facing features include overlays and widgets for Super Chat, Super Stickers, emotes, and subscriber alerts. That integration may suit a creator who wants those elements as part of the broadcast workflow.

Do not assume that one Streamlabs product’s limits apply to all the others. Multistreaming eligibility depends on the tool and plan: the company’s page describes a limited Dual Output scenario and an Ultra membership requirement for Console destinations of choice. Check the exact Streamlabs product and current plan terms before choosing it for simultaneous output.
XSplit Broadcaster: a Windows production option
XSplit Broadcaster is Windows software. Its product page describes scene-based live production, recording, custom RTMP, multiple outputs, and use of NVIDIA NVENC where available. A Premium License enables simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms according to the product information.

The XSplit pricing page accessed in 2026 listed free use up to 720p without a watermark, $14.99/month, $59.99/year, and a $119.99 lifetime purchase. It listed multiple scenes, higher-resolution output, and commercial use among Premium distinctions. These are vendor-published prices observed in 2026, not guaranteed current offers; verify the live pricing and terms before buying. You do not need XSplit specifically to stream to YouTube.
How to choose without relying on a “best for everyone” claim
- Start with your operating system and computer. Check the software’s current compatibility requirements. Then consider the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene load you intend to use. Meeting minimum requirements does not prove a successful broadcast.
- Match the workflow to the production. A simple gameplay or screen broadcast, a multi-camera setup, external audio/video hardware, and a mobile stream are different needs. YouTube supports webcam, mobile, and encoder workflows; choose an encoder when its production controls matter to you.
- Identify the feature that would change your choice. OBS offers extensibility through plugins and scripts; Streamlabs emphasizes YouTube widgets and alerts; XSplit describes scene, recording, custom RTMP, and multiple-output features.
- Check plan boundaries before committing. This particularly matters for Streamlabs multistreaming and XSplit Premium features. Product names alone do not tell you which plan includes the capability you need.
- Try a real production before an important broadcast. Scene complexity, encoder selection, resolution, and frame rate affect what a given computer can handle. A short test using your intended sources and audio path can reveal setup issues before you go live.
Before your first YouTube broadcast
- Choose the broadcast method. Use an encoder when you need screen/gameplay capture, external AV hardware, or a more involved production. For a webcam- or mobile-led broadcast, YouTube also offers those approaches.
- Enable live streaming on your YouTube account in advance. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the moment of your event.
- Install and configure the encoder for your system. Check the current software requirements and, for OBS, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Your system’s compatibility does not guarantee that every resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene combination will work.
- Connect the encoder to your YouTube live setup. Follow the current instructions shown in YouTube Studio and the encoder you selected. Keep your stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel.
- Test picture, sound, and the full production. Include the scenes, cameras, microphones, overlays, and other sources you expect to use. Resolve problems in a test before relying on the setup for a scheduled stream.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a first live broadcast: If live streaming was only just enabled, YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check that activation has completed before troubleshooting the encoder.
- The computer struggles during a complex production: Lowering production demands may help, but the exact viable settings depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS warns that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee successful streaming; use its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point and test the full scene.
- A Streamlabs feature or destination is unavailable: Check which Streamlabs product and plan you are using. The company’s multistreaming terms differ across tools and include plan-specific limits.
- XSplit multistreaming is unavailable: Check whether your license includes Premium, which XSplit identifies as enabling simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms.
- The chosen software does not match the job: A desktop encoder is designed to produce a broadcast from a running device. If you need prerecorded video to loop on YouTube while your computer is off, use a cloud service built for that purpose rather than assuming a desktop encoder will run without a host computer.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should keep looping 24/7, StreamNeo is #1 among the cloud options covered here: it runs from the cloud, accepts video at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.
