YouTube supports basic SRT in plain UTF-8; styling in an SRT file is not recognized.
Upload a timed SRT file in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Subtitles from the left menu.
- Select the video you want to caption.
- Select Add language, then choose the language spoken in the subtitles.
- Under Subtitles, choose Add and select the upload-file option.
- Choose the SRT file that already contains timings, then save.
YouTube documents this workflow in its Help guidance. Labels and capitalization can vary by language or interface version, so follow the current labels shown in your Studio account. You can also add subtitles during the video upload process.
Check that the file is a properly formed SRT
YouTube supports basic SubRip (.srt) subtitles. The file must be plain UTF-8. YouTube does not recognize style information in SRT files, so do not expect formatting or styling to carry over.
A simple SRT cue has a sequential number, a start and end time in HH:MM:SS,mmm format separated by an arrow, and the caption text on the following line or lines. For example:

Welcome to the video.This is an illustrative example of the basic structure, not a complete file specification. If you need positioning or formatting, YouTube documents other subtitle formats with different feature support; they are not necessarily interchangeable in every editing workflow.
Choose the right method for the material you have

If you have a transcript but no timings
Use YouTube Studio’s Auto-sync option rather than uploading untimed text as though it were a timed SRT. YouTube says the transcript must be in a language supported by its speech recognition technology and must match the language spoken in the video. Its guidance does not recommend this method for videos longer than an hour or for videos with poor audio quality. Timing can take a few minutes; once ready, the subtitles are automatically published as part of the Auto-sync workflow.

If you need to enter captions yourself
YouTube also documents typing or pasting captions while playing the video. This is an alternative to importing a timed SRT, not a step required for SRT upload.
Set the subtitle language deliberately
Choose the language the subtitles are written in when adding them. YouTube says the original video-language setting helps YouTube and contributors understand the video and helps viewers find videos in their language. If someone else is handling subtitles through Subtitle Editor, YouTube says the video language must be set before that collaborator can add or edit them.

Fix common SRT upload problems
- The file is rejected or does not import as expected: Confirm it is an
.srtfile encoded as plain UTF-8. - Formatting does not appear: Remove styling or markup that depends on formatting; YouTube says it does not recognize SRT style information.
- Captions are missing or mistimed: Check the cue structure against the basic example: a cue number, start and end timestamps, and caption text. Make sure the file actually contains timings.
- The subtitles are assigned to the wrong language or video: Recheck the selected video and subtitle language in Studio before saving.
- You have transcript text without timestamps: Use Auto-sync if the transcript and audio meet YouTube’s stated conditions, or enter captions manually. An untimed transcript is not a timed SRT.
