How to Live Stream 360-Degree Video with Wowza Streaming Engine

Wowza can ingest and deliver a 360 live feed, but an independent compatible player must render it as an interactive sphere. Here is the RTMP-to-HLS setup and what to test.

To live stream 360-degree video with Wowza Streaming Engine, send a stitched or equirectangular camera feed to a Wowza live application—typically by RTMP—then deliver it over HLS to a separate player that can interpret and render 360 video. Wowza handles ingest and delivery; it does not, by itself, make an ordinary player display an interactive sphere.

How the 360 streaming chain works

A 360 broadcast depends on three parts working together: a camera or encoder that outputs a stitched 360 feed, Wowza Streaming Engine to receive and deliver it, and a viewer player that supports the feed’s projection and lets viewers look around. A regular HLS player may show an equirectangular image as a flat rectangle.

Wowza’s documented 360 walkthrough, published in November 2020, uses an Insta360 Pro 2 publishing RTMP to a live application, with HLS playback. It then sends the HLS URL to a separate VR-capable player. Treat that camera and player as historical examples, not current product recommendations. Wowza’s 360-degree streaming walkthrough

What you need before setup

  • A 360 camera and any required stitching software capable of producing a compatible live output.
  • A Wowza Streaming Engine installation with a live application configured for the intended ingest and playback protocols.
  • A 360-capable viewer player that supports HLS and the projection format your camera produces.
  • Network access from the encoder to Wowza, and from viewers to the server. For remote publishing, the server address must be reachable and the relevant firewall rules must allow traffic.
  • A plan for source authentication, stream-key security, bandwidth, resolution, frame rate, and end-to-end delay.

Wowza’s current specifications list H.264 video input over RTMP and HLS delivery support. They also say RTMP- and RTSP-based encoders must provide source credentials by default. Confirm the camera’s current firmware, codec, output resolution, frame rate, and stitching mode against your intended player and server; the historical walkthrough does not establish current compatibility for a particular camera model. Configure RTMP ingest and HLS playback

  1. Create a live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create or select an application intended for live publishing. Enable HLS playback for the application if the destination player will consume HLS. The exact interface may vary by Engine version.
  2. Get the publishing endpoint and credentials. Provide the encoder with the server host, RTMP port, application name, stream name, and the source credentials required by the application. Wowza’s specification lists TCP port 1935 for RTMP. Do not expose credentials publicly or disable source authentication for a production stream.
  3. Set up the camera output. In the camera or encoder’s current control software, choose the stitched 360 output and configure its RTMP destination using the values from the prior step. The 2020 Wowza example used port 1935 and a chosen stream name; its specific camera interface is dated.
  4. Start publishing and verify ingest. Start the camera feed, then check Wowza’s live sources or application monitoring view to confirm the expected stream name appears and video is arriving. A private or local IP address only works for devices on that network; remote camera operators need a reachable server address and suitable firewall and routing configuration.
  5. Obtain the HLS playback URL. Use the application’s HLS playback path or the URL surfaced by the Engine for that live stream. Check it from a viewer network, not only from the server itself. Wowza lists TCP ports 80 and 443 for HTTP and HTTPS streaming; actual port use depends on your configuration.
  6. Open it in a 360-capable player. Enter the HLS URL in a separate player that supports both HLS and the camera’s spherical projection, then enable its 360 or spherical viewing mode if required. Verify that a viewer can pan around the scene rather than seeing only a flat frame.

Test the full viewer experience

Test the camera-to-server-to-player path end to end before the event, including from the network and devices your audience will use. A successful RTMP connection proves only that the server receives the feed; it does not prove that the player renders the sphere correctly.

  • Projection and stitching: Look for seams, incorrect orientation, missing areas, or a flat image. Confirm the player supports the camera’s output format.
  • Audio and motion: Check audio synchronization and whether movement or orientation behaves as expected in the target player.
  • Resolution and bitrate: Observe the actual picture quality and buffering on representative viewer connections. A high-resolution source needs sufficient upload bandwidth from the camera site and download capacity for viewers.
  • Latency: Measure camera-to-viewer delay under your own setup. A 2020 local demonstration reported roughly 10–15 seconds with its particular low-latency HLS configuration; that is not a general Wowza or 360-stream guarantee.
  • Adaptive bitrate: If you need multiple quality levels, Wowza documents a transcoder workflow for creating aligned renditions. Validate that the specific transcoding and player combination preserves the camera’s spherical projection and any required metadata; support cannot be assumed for every combination. Choose protocols and destinations around the viewer

RTMP ingest with HLS playback

This is the directly documented pattern in Wowza’s 360 walkthrough and a practical starting point when the camera can publish RTMP and the intended player can render 360 from HLS. Validate delay against your use case rather than assuming a particular latency.

WebRTC for real-time delivery

Wowza also documents WebRTC and protocol bridging with HLS, but the cited 360 walkthrough does not establish a ready-made WebRTC spherical-player workflow. Wowza’s guide, updated September 30, 2026, states: “Encryption is mandatory for WebRTC, so you must configure TLS before streaming.” Confirm that the camera, Engine configuration, and viewer player all support the chosen path before relying on it. Wowza WebRTC documentation

Forwarding to another platform

Wowza supports generic RTMP Stream Targets for sending an outgoing stream to a third-party destination. Configure the destination first and verify its acceptance of 360 projection and metadata separately. If forwarding multiple adaptive-bitrate renditions, the destination needs corresponding streams and targets. Wowza RTMP Stream Targets documentation

Security, capacity, and operating cautions

  • Protect the ingest: Keep source authentication enabled and share the publishing credentials only with the encoder operator. The 2020 walkthrough temporarily opened RTMP sources for a local demonstration; that is not a production security recommendation.
  • Open only necessary network ports: Wowza lists TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 80/443 for HTTP/HTTPS streaming, with additional ports for other protocols. Match firewall rules to the protocols actually configured.
  • Size for the workload: Wowza’s 2026 specification recommends, for high-load production, a six-core 3.00 GHz-or-better CPU, 16–32 GB RAM, SATA SSD, and 10 Gbps Ethernet. Its minimum-production recommendation is a single quad-core 3.00 GHz-or-better CPU, 4 GB RAM, SATA HDD, and 1 Gbps Ethernet. These are vendor deployment recommendations, not independent performance tests or 360-specific guarantees; actual needs vary with stream count, transcoding, resolution, and delivery load.
  • Check rights and platform rules: Obtain permission for the captured and broadcast material, including music, performances, and other people’s content where applicable. If you send the stream to a platform, check that platform’s current rules for live video and 360 content.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No source appears in Wowza Incorrect host, port, application or stream name; failed authentication; blocked route or firewall. Compare the encoder settings with the live application’s endpoint and credentials. Confirm the encoder can reach the server and that TCP 1935 is permitted for RTMP.
Wowza receives video, but the viewer sees a flat rectangle The player is not in 360 mode or does not support the feed’s projection. Use a player documented to support HLS and the camera’s spherical format; enable its 360/spherical mode and test on the target device.
HLS URL fails outside the server network The URL points to a private address, the server is not publicly reachable, or HTTP/HTTPS traffic is blocked. Test from an external network, verify the public address and routing, and check the configured HTTP/HTTPS ports and firewall.
Playback buffers or quality drops Insufficient camera upload or viewer bandwidth, overloaded server, or an unsuitable single rendition. Compare source bitrate with available upload capacity, inspect server load, and consider a tested adaptive-bitrate workflow if the player handles the output correctly.
Stitching, orientation, or projection looks wrong Camera output settings and player interpretation do not match, or transcoding altered the expected format. Verify the camera’s stitch/output mode and test the unchanged source in the intended player before introducing transcoding.
Delay is higher than expected HLS settings, buffering, network conditions, or player behavior differ from the demonstration setup. Measure end-to-end delay with the actual configuration and audience network; do not treat a historical local demonstration as a guaranteed target.
