If Facebook Live won’t start, keeps disconnecting, or has no sound, begin with low-risk checks: test your connection, update and restart your browser or device, and check microphone access if viewers cannot hear you. Meta’s accessible guidance covers general Facebook video playback problems rather than a complete Live troubleshooting procedure, so these are sensible first checks—not guaranteed fixes.
Start by identifying what is failing
Separate the symptom from the device you are using. A stream that will not start or keeps disconnecting points first to the connection; an unexpected computer experience makes the browser a useful place to check; missing sound calls for a microphone-access check. If only a Live effect is missing, check whether you are using the app workflow Meta documents for effects.
- Cannot start or connection drops: reconnect to Wi-Fi or try another network.
- Computer or browser behaves unexpectedly: update the browser, close it, and restart the computer.
- Viewers cannot hear you: check the selected microphone and whether Facebook has permission to use it.
- An effect is missing: use the Facebook app on iOS or Android for the documented effects workflow.
These distinctions are a practical way to narrow down the problem, not a formal diagnostic tree published by Meta.
Fix an unstable connection or a Live stream that disconnects
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi. Disconnect and reconnect, then try again. If possible, test a different network to see whether the problem follows the connection.
- Restart your router or modem if the connection is slow. Meta’s general video troubleshooting recommends this for slow connections. It is a first-pass check, not a confirmed Live-specific requirement.
- Consider whether other services are affected. If other apps or sites also struggle, the issue may extend beyond Facebook. If only Facebook is affected, note that distinction for your report.
Meta’s available guidance does not establish specific Facebook Live bandwidth requirements or explain particular disconnect errors. Avoid treating one brief successful retry as proof that a persistent issue is resolved.

Resolve computer and browser problems
- Update your browser. Meta recommends a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge for the best Facebook video experience. This is general video guidance; it does not establish identical support for every browser version or Live feature.
- Close the browser and restart the computer. Reopen Facebook and try again after the restart.
- Record whether the same problem happens elsewhere. Note if it affects other Facebook functions or only the Live broadcast. This helps distinguish a broader device or network issue from one limited to Facebook.
Check microphone access if your Live has no sound
- Confirm the intended microphone is selected and enabled. Check the microphone settings on your device or in the application you are using.
- Check browser or device permissions. Make sure Facebook is allowed to use the microphone, then retry.
This is a general access check, not an official Live-specific audio procedure: Meta’s available microphone-permission guidance concerns sending voice messages. If permission is already enabled and the problem continues, include that in your report rather than assuming permission is the cause.
If a Live effect is missing
Meta’s documented instructions for adding Live effects use the Facebook app on iOS or Android. If you are trying to add an effect from a computer or another workflow, switch to the documented app workflow and check again. This feature-specific information does not establish requirements for all ways of creating or streaming a Live broadcast.

Report the problem if the checks do not help
Meta’s general video troubleshooting advises reporting a problem if its suggested checks do not resolve it. Use Facebook’s available in-product problem-reporting flow or Help Center for current, account-specific support. A separate Live troubleshooting item exists, but its instructions are not available here, so exact eligibility rules, error meanings, and setup requirements cannot be confirmed.
For a more useful report, capture:
- Whether you were trying to start a broadcast, keep it connected, restore sound, or add an effect.
- Your device and, on a computer, browser name and version.
- Whether you were using Wi-Fi or another network, and whether other services were affected.
- The checks you tried and any error text shown by Facebook.
