To cast media served by Wowza Streaming Engine to a Chromecast, play the Wowza stream in a Cast-enabled player—Wowza Flowplayer documents a Chromecast plugin—and cast from that player to a receiver on the same local network. Serve the player page over HTTPS; Flowplayer says the Cast icon will not appear on an insecure page.
How the setup works
Wowza Streaming Engine delivers the media. A Cast-capable player supplies the casting control and sends playback to the receiver. The practical route is an HLS stream played through a browser page that integrates Wowza Flowplayer’s Chromecast plugin. Casting also depends on the receiver being powered on, reachable, and on the sender’s local network.
This method is for playing live or on-demand media from Wowza on a Cast receiver; it does not make Wowza itself a Chromecast control. Your stream’s codec and segment format must also be compatible with the selected player and receiver.
Prepare the Wowza playback URL
Build the HLS address from your deployment
Wowza playback URLs depend on the server host, application, stream name, and playback protocol. Wowza’s example HLS URL is http://example.com:1935/myApplication/myStream/playlist.m3u8. For secure playback, Wowza says to use the hostname covered by the SSL certificate and port 443. If your player page is HTTPS, use an HTTPS playback URL as well: browsers may block insecure HTTP media on a secure page as mixed content.
Use a compatible stream format
HLS is a practical browser-player route supported by Wowza. Its format documentation describes HLS as segmented adaptive-bitrate delivery over HTTP and lists H.264 video with AAC-family audio support for its HLS packetizer. That establishes Wowza support, not universal compatibility: confirm that the selected Cast receiver and player accept the actual codecs and segment format you serve. Integrate a Cast-capable player
Use Wowza Flowplayer’s Chromecast plugin
Wowza Flowplayer documents a Chromecast plugin that adds casting support to videos. Its integration loads the Flowplayer core player and the Chromecast plugin, then configures the chromecast namespace. Configure the receiver application identifier and the HLS audio and video segment-format fields for your stream. Follow the current plugin instructions for the exact script loading and configuration syntax: Flowplayer Chromecast plugin.
Choose the receiver application deliberately
The plugin documents stable and canary receiver application options. You can instead set the ID of a Google-registered custom Cast receiver application if you need its behavior, but Wowza cautions that not all features may be available with a custom receiver. Choose the documented option that matches your integration before troubleshooting playback.

Serve the player page securely
Host the page containing the player over HTTPS. Flowplayer says insecure websites do not show the Cast icon, and its support FAQ likewise requires an SSL-protected site. Ensure the stream itself is reachable securely from the page and from the receiver.
Cast from the browser
- Start the receiver. Power on the Chromecast or other compatible Cast receiver and connect it to the same local network as the device running the player.
- Open the HTTPS player page. Load the page with the Flowplayer Chromecast plugin and start the Wowza HLS stream.
- Select the Cast control. Use the Cast icon in the player or browser interface and choose the receiver. The icon appears only when the page and receiver meet the requirements.
- Confirm playback on the television. If the player connects but video does not begin, check receiver access to the complete playlist and all referenced media segments—not just the page or playlist URL.
Network ports to check
Allow the ports used by your deployment through the Wowza host firewall, cloud security group, and any intervening network controls. Wowza’s technical specifications, dated July 15, 2026, list TCP 80 for HLS and TCP 443 for HTTPS/SSL-TLS streaming. Wowza playback documentation identifies 1935 as the default streaming port and 443 for secure playback. Do not open ports you do not use. See Wowza Streaming Engine technical specifications.

Choose a receiver integration

Troubleshoot common failures
The Cast icon is missing
- Check that the player page uses HTTPS; an insecure page may not show the control.
- Confirm the receiver is powered on, within range, and on the same local network as the sender.
- Reload the player page after confirming the receiver is discoverable.
The player works, but casting fails or stalls
- Test whether the receiver can reach the full HLS playlist and every segment URL. A playlist that loads on the sender may still reference addresses inaccessible to the receiver.
- Check that the chosen receiver supports the video/audio codecs and segment format in the stream. Wowza’s HLS support does not guarantee compatibility with every receiver.
- Verify that the necessary streaming ports are allowed through host and network firewalls.
A secure player page cannot load the stream
Use HTTPS for playback when the embedded page is HTTPS. An HTTP media URL on an SSL-protected page can be blocked as mixed content; use the certificate hostname and port 443 for secure Wowza playback.
A custom receiver behaves differently
Confirm that the player is using the intended receiver application ID. The plugin permits a custom registered receiver, but feature availability may differ from the documented receiver options.
