The benefits depend on the model—such as advertising, subscriptions, tips, or revenue sharing—and on whether the audience, costs, and platform terms fit the work. VOD can create opportunity, but it does not guarantee views, income, or sales.
What video on demand makes possible
VOD describes video viewers can select and watch when they want, rather than only at a scheduled time. It is not one business model: services and markets can differ in how viewers access content, how advertising is sold, and how content is made available and discovered. The European Commission’s study of the EU market examined online viewing, online advertising, subscription services, and the availability and visibility of content as distinct dimensions (European Commission study).
For creators and businesses, that flexibility can support wider distribution and several possible revenue approaches. The practical value depends on the platform and audience: a large market does not establish that a particular video or organization will attract viewers or make money.
Potential benefits for creators
Viewers can watch on their own schedule
An on-demand library allows people to choose when to watch, which can suit tutorials, game-related videos, commentary, and other content that viewers may want to find later. Actual reach still depends on audience interest, platform availability, and discoverability; the reviewed market sources do not rank individual platforms or establish likely view counts.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
More than one possible monetization route
Depending on the platform, creator monetization can include tipping, direct subscriptions, creator funds, and revenue sharing. These are mechanisms, not promises of earnings: eligibility, terms, and the audience’s willingness to pay or engage all matter. Deloitte’s 2025 outlook discusses platform monetization alongside production costs, advertising economics, and competition, underscoring that revenue should be weighed against the work and expense required to produce content (Deloitte’s 2025 digital media trends outlook).
A library can serve different audience needs
On-demand publishing can make a body of work available for people to select from, rather than requiring every viewer to arrive at one broadcast time. That is a distribution advantage, not a guarantee that older videos will keep attracting attention; visibility and platform conditions remain important.

Potential benefits for businesses
Different ways to fund and distribute video
VOD markets include subscription and advertising-supported services, among other arrangements. The model determines how viewers access content and how a service may finance it. A business should consider whether its intended audience is likely to use that model, and whether it wants to rely on advertising, paid access, or a combination.
Market scale can provide context, not a forecast
In the UK, the commercial TV and online video market exceeded £18 billion in 2025, according to Ofcom’s 2026 report. That figure describes a national market, not the likely result for an individual business. Ofcom also found that broadcaster content still accounted for the majority of video watched in UK homes and that SVoD take-up had been broadly steady—reasons not to assume on-demand services uniformly displace other viewing or keep growing at the same pace (Ofcom, Media Nations).

Globally, BIEM’s summary of Futuresource’s market outlook says consumer spending on subscription video on demand (SVoD) reached EUR 120 billion in 2025, up 14% from 2024. The summary attributes growth increasingly to pricing, tier restructuring, and ad-supported plans in saturated developed markets. This is consumer spending on subscriptions, not creator income or a measure of what a particular business can earn (BIEM summary of Futuresource’s outlook).
Content can support a wider business goal
A business may use video as part of distribution, audience communication, or a paid content offer. Whether that helps depends on the audience fit and the costs of producing and maintaining the content. The market figures above cannot show whether VOD will increase a specific company’s sales.

How to decide whether VOD fits
Compare the model and its economics before committing to a platform or production plan:
- Revenue basis: Identify whether the opportunity is advertising, subscriptions, tips, creator funds, or revenue sharing, and check the relevant eligibility rules and terms.
- Audience and reach: Consider where the intended viewers are, which services are available to them, and how they are likely to find the content. The cited sources do not establish a best platform for any particular audience.
- Costs and competition: Account for the time and money required to produce content, along with advertising economics, pricing or tier structures, and competing material.
- Market maturity: Distinguish subscriber or viewing growth from revenue growth. In mature markets, revenue changes can reflect price increases, tier changes, or advertising-supported plans rather than a comparable rise in audience.
- Control and terms: Review the platform’s monetization rules, distribution conditions, and the degree of control you retain over access to your audience and content.
These are decision factors, not a platform ranking or earnings calculation. Estimate costs against a realistic audience and business objective, and treat any projected revenue or sales lift as uncertain until supported by your own results.

When a live loop is a different tool
VOD usually means viewers select a video to watch on demand. A continuously running YouTube livestream made from uploaded recordings is a separate distribution choice: it gives viewers a scheduled or ongoing live channel, not an on-demand catalogue. It may suit a business or creator who wants a continuous channel, but it does not replace evaluating VOD access, monetization, production costs, and audience fit.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
