What PayPal protection does—and does not—cover
PayPal’s US Seller Protection terms, last updated January 26, 2026, list “Donations, including payments received as crowdfunding or crowdlending” among ineligible transactions. That means creators should not assume that an ordinary tip is covered just because it was accepted through PayPal or a tipping platform. Check the transaction’s eligibility and the terms that apply to your account and payment; do not infer coverage from a tip page or platform integration. Read PayPal’s US Seller Protection terms.
PayPal distinguishes its own disputes from card-issuer chargebacks. When a cardholder asks their issuer to reverse a payment, the issuer handles the chargeback. PayPal may collect information from the seller to support the response, but neither submitting evidence nor a platform’s protection option guarantees the outcome. Follow the exact instructions and deadline in the notice rather than relying on a general deadline. PayPal’s chargeback guide explains the process.
Build a transaction-linked evidence record
Keep records that connect the payment to the person, the stream, and what was promised or provided. Evidence should address the reason stated in the notice; a large bundle of unrelated screenshots is less useful than a clear, relevant response.

- Identify the payment: save the PayPal transaction ID and relevant transaction details.
- Capture the stream context: retain the relevant chat log and a VOD clip or screenshot showing the tip and surrounding interaction. Streamlabs lists chat logs, VODs, and screenshots as useful material for its support process. Streamlabs’ chargeback help guide.
- Document any promised service or digital item: preserve what was offered and records showing whether it was fulfilled or accessed. PayPal gives examples for intangible goods and services such as system logs, delivery records, download history, and platform screenshots. PayPal’s dispute and chargeback response guidance.
- Keep records together: associate the chat, stream capture, and fulfillment records with the transaction ID so you can retrieve the right material quickly.
Respond to the notice that you actually received
- Read the notice and identify the route. Determine whether it is a PayPal dispute or a card-issuer chargeback, and note the stated reason and deadline. The issuer handles a card chargeback; PayPal’s role may include collecting your evidence.
- Match the evidence to the reason. PayPal identifies reasons including unauthorized payment, service not rendered, duplicate payment, and credit not processed. Explain the relevant facts and attach records that address that specific allegation.
- Submit through the named process promptly. For an unauthorized-transaction dispute, PayPal directs sellers to open the matter in the Resolution Center and upload requested information. For an issuer chargeback, follow PayPal’s chargeback instructions and the deadline shown for that case. Do not assume you can add evidence later.
- Keep a copy of what you sent. Retain your submission and any follow-up notice with the transaction record.
For a Streamlabs PayPal tip, Streamlabs says the payment goes directly through PayPal rather than being held by Streamlabs. If there is a payment or chargeback problem, its FAQ recommends contacting PayPal with the transaction ID. Streamlabs may have relevant platform records or a support route, but that does not replace PayPal’s process or the issuer’s role in a card chargeback. Streamlabs’ PayPal tipping FAQ.
Can “no refunds” wording stop a chargeback?
No. A “donations are non-refundable” notice does not make a donor or card issuer unable to challenge a payment, and the cited sources do not establish that such wording prevents a chargeback. Streamlabs says it cannot guarantee that every dispute will be won because the decision comes from the payment processor and bank. Treat clear terms as communication with viewers, not as a substitute for transaction evidence or the dispute process.

Optional example: Streamlabs and PayPal Chargeback Protection
Streamlabs documents an optional PayPal Chargeback Protection setup for eligible users. Its guide describes protection for specified unbranded credit- and debit-card transactions where the feature is enabled and the transaction qualifies; it is not blanket protection for all tips or donations. Streamlabs also says tipper-detail collection must be enabled in Streamlabs for the data transfer described in its setup to work, and the extra fields may add friction for viewers. Check the current PayPal terms, your account offer, setup requirements, country availability, and the specific transaction status before treating a payment as covered. Streamlabs’ enhanced-protection setup guide was updated July 22, 2025; its reported fee and availability may change.
PayPal’s Online Payment Services Agreement describes Chargeback Protection tools with enrollment and transaction requirements, and limits them to eligible chargebacks. It does not establish universal protection for donation or tip payments. Check PayPal’s current Online Payment Services Agreement and the terms shown in your account.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every PayPal payment qualifies for Seller Protection: PayPal’s cited US terms expressly list donations as ineligible.
- Using one response for every reason: unauthorized payment, service not rendered, duplicate payment, and credit not processed call for evidence relevant to the specific claim.
- Waiting for a platform to resolve an issuer case: use the route and deadline in PayPal’s notice; platform support can assist with records but does not control the issuer’s decision.
- Relying on screenshots alone: preserve the transaction ID and other relevant records, including chat and fulfillment evidence where applicable.
- Assuming a feature name means a transaction is covered: verify eligibility, configuration, payment method, and transaction status in the applicable terms and account.
