Manager is the browser interface for an Engine instance; it is separate from Wowza Video’s Stream Health Monitor.
What you need before you start
- A running Wowza Streaming Engine instance and access to its Manager account.
- A live source—such as a compatible camera or encoder. You do not need to buy a new encoder if your existing equipment can publish using a protocol supported by your setup.
- A live application, the playback types your viewers need, and any required source credentials.
- Network access to the Engine streaming host and port. Wowza documents TCP port 1935 as the default; it can be changed in Virtual Host Setup.
Supported protocols and authentication depend on the source and application configuration. Check the device’s publishing options and the Engine setup rather than assuming every encoder uses the same connection fields or authentication method.
How do I open Wowza Streaming Engine Manager?
- Confirm the WSE instance is running.
- In a modern browser, open the documented default address format
http://[wowza-ip-address]:8088/enginemanager, replacing the bracketed value with your own Engine host address. This is a default example, not a public server address. - Sign in with your own Manager credentials. Do not share or publish those credentials.
Manager separates server and virtual-host controls from application controls. Its home view summarizes source and playback connections and resource consumption, including CPU, Java heap, memory, and disk. Use Server Monitoring or Virtual Host Monitoring for scoped connection, throughput, and uptime views, and Application Monitoring for application-level connections, throughput, and uptime. Wowza’s Manager navigation guide describes these views.
How do I prepare a live application?
- In Manager, create a live application for the source you intend to publish.
- Open the application’s Setup page and select the playback types required by your viewers. Wowza explains that these choices enable source transmuxing for formats and protocols such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, RTMP, and RTSP/RTP.
- Set Playback Security for the audience and access pattern you actually intend. “No client restrictions” is an available option, not a safe default for every stream.
- If you change playback-security settings, restart the application as directed in the documented workflow.
Playback types determine the viewer delivery options; they are not a substitute for confirming that the source itself can connect successfully. See Wowza’s live encoder connection guide for the application and publishing workflow.

How do I connect an encoder or camera to Wowza?
Check the source and protocol
First confirm the camera or encoder can output a protocol accepted by the Engine configuration, and note its fields for server address, port, application name, and stream name. Manager includes integrations for some common encoders; other devices may require manual setup. The available documentation does not establish a universally best encoder model, so choose equipment based on compatibility and your production requirements.
Enter the publishing destination
Configure the source with the Engine host address and streaming port (TCP 1935 by default), the live application name, and the stream name. Use the values for your own application and deployment; do not copy sample credentials or assume the port has not been changed in Virtual Host Setup.

Provide source credentials when required
In the documented workflow, RTMP- and RTSP-based encoders must provide a source username and password by default when source authentication is enabled. This requirement should not be generalized to every protocol. Source credentials are case-sensitive; Wowza documents alphanumeric characters, periods, underscores, and hyphens as allowed characters. Enter them in the encoder only when the configured source-authentication workflow calls for them.
How can I tell if my live stream is active?
- In Manager, open the live application and select Incoming Streams.
- Find the stream and verify its status is Active. If it is absent or inactive, check the source’s destination address, application and stream names, port, protocol, and any required source credentials.
- Open the stream entry to inspect uptime, network throughput, and other published-stream information.
- Select Test Playback and choose a playback URL that matches a playback type enabled for the application.
- Open that URL in an appropriate player or browser. Use a secure playback URL only if SSL/TLS streaming is configured for the deployment.
An Active incoming stream confirms that the source is publishing; it does not by itself prove that a viewer can play it. Treat source status and a successful playback test as separate checks.

Where do I monitor connections and server load?

These views answer different operational questions: an application can be configured correctly while a source is not publishing, and a source can be Active while a viewer path still fails. Check the narrowest relevant layer first, then widen the investigation if needed.
Which management method should I use?

What is different in Wowza Video’s Stream Health Monitor?
Wowza Video is a separate product from Wowza Streaming Engine. Its Live Stream Details page has a Stream Health tab that reports inbound bitrate, frame rate at the transcoder, and keyframe interval. Wowza’s documentation says the selectable sessions for a stream cover the previous 90 days. These details describe Wowza Video and should not be treated as evidence that the same metrics or controls appear in WSE Manager. See Wowza’s live stream details documentation.
Troubleshooting common publishing and playback problems
