Bridge connects NDI networks; it does not remove the need to plan bandwidth, router access, security, and testing.
What NDI Bridge does—and what it does not
NDI Bridge is the documented NDI workflow for connecting production networks over a wide-area network (WAN). Host and Join modes link remote sites; Local mode can proxy sources or support local transcoding workflows. It makes selected NDI sources available across connected networks, rather than turning the internet into a predictable, fixed-performance link. Capabilities and settings are described in the NDI Bridge documentation and on the NDI Bridge product page.
Plan separately for the local production network and the internet path between sites. NDI describes gigabit networking as essential to production workflows. Its bandwidth guidance says a typical 1080p60 NDI stream can reach 150 Mbps per stream; that figure is local/workflow planning guidance, not a guaranteed internet bitrate or a universal ISP upload-speed requirement. NDI says bandwidth is not deterministic, so plan around expected utilization and test the actual route. See NDI’s bandwidth guidance.
Plan the connection before configuring Bridge
Map sources, direction, and receivers
- List which NDI sources must be available at each site and which computers or production systems will receive them.
- Decide whether video needs to travel one way or in both directions, and how many simultaneous sources and receivers are involved.
- Estimate sustained upload capacity at the sending site and download capacity at the receiving site. Leave headroom for other traffic and account for all concurrent streams.
- Set a latency tolerance: a workflow that can accept extra delay may use more buffering or compression than an interactive production requiring a tighter response.
Confirm network access and security
At least one location needs a public IP address and a network port translated to the local IP address of its Bridge machine. Bridge can find the public IP, but it cannot configure the router’s forwarding rule. The documented default port is 5990, and another port can be selected. Confirm the chosen port and forwarding details in the Bridge product information and the port-forwarding guidance; router interfaces and network policies vary.

The product page describes 256-bit encryption and requires every endpoint to use the same encryption key. Treat that key like a password: share it only with intended participants and avoid posting it in public or unsecured channels.
Check the Bridge computer requirements
The Bridge product page lists Windows 10 64-bit or later, an Intel or AMD CPU with SSE4 or later, 6 GB RAM or better, and a 1 Gbps LAN as minimum requirements. These are software requirements, not a promise that an internet connection or a particular computer will deliver a specific stream quality. Requirements and downloads can change; check the current Bridge page before deployment.

Configure an NDI Bridge WAN link
- Install Bridge at both sites. Check the current NDI download and system requirements, then install Bridge on the computers that will host and join the connection.
- Choose the roles. Configure the reachable site as Host and the remote site as Join. Select Local mode instead when the task is local proxying or transcoding rather than connecting separate sites. The required direction and source layout determine how you assign the roles.
- Forward the host port. On the host site’s router, forward the selected Bridge port—5990 by default—to the Bridge computer’s local IP address. Reserve or otherwise keep that local address stable so the rule continues to point to the right device. Bridge does not set up this router rule for you.
- Match the encryption key. Enter the same key at all participating endpoints. Distribute it securely and restrict access to the intended production team.
- Set the video handling options. Choose an encoding path that both ends and the source formats support. For NDI HX, Bridge documentation describes H.264 or HEVC transcoding. For High Bandwidth NDI, available choices include SpeedHQ, passthrough, or no transcoding, depending on configuration. Compression can reduce WAN load but changes the source workflow characteristics; use the settings documented for your Bridge version and equipment.
- Start the connection and verify reception. Confirm the intended sources appear to the receiving production system. Test every required source and direction, not just whether the endpoints report a connection.
- Measure under realistic load. Use Bridge diagnostics to inspect send and receive rates, round-trip time, packet loss, and buffer behavior while the production network is doing its normal work. Tune using the actual route and content rather than assuming a headline speed test predicts video performance.
Choose between high-bandwidth and compressed transport
There is no universally best setting. Compare the visual quality and resolution you need with the sustained capacity at both ends, latency tolerance, number of concurrent sources and receivers, codec support, and available hardware encoding or decoding. A high-bandwidth or passthrough path preserves a different set of source characteristics but demands more capacity; compression can reduce WAN load but requires compatible encoders and decoders. The Bridge documentation describes the options, not an end-to-end performance guarantee.
On Windows 10 and later, an HEVC decoder may require a separate Microsoft Store license. Check the receiving machine’s codec support before selecting HEVC, particularly if the production cannot tolerate setup delays.

Use buffering carefully
Bridge’s configurable buffer stores video data to help smooth a path with variable latency or bandwidth. That can improve continuity, but it increases latency. Tune it to the real use case: a contribution feed may have more tolerance for delay than a live interactive workflow. The NDI 6.1 Bridge documentation describes a buffer test that requires both Bridge endpoints to run that version; consult the buffer documentation for the applicable controls and test procedure.
Local network gear is not an internet upgrade
A gigabit Ethernet switch and suitable cabling may help build a wired local NDI production network, especially when several devices exchange high-bandwidth video. Choose a switch with enough ports for the production devices and planned expansion. A switch or cable does not increase the ISP service rate, fix packet loss beyond your LAN, or ensure WAN stability; it is not a universal purchase requirement for every Bridge setup.

Troubleshoot common Bridge problems

Do not build a new workflow around NDI Remote
NDI Remote is discontinued and offline. NDI’s tools catalog carries a discontinuation notice, and its documentation says the service was taken offline after issues were identified. It should not be treated as a currently working link-based guest workflow. Check the current NDI Tools catalog and NDI Remote documentation for status changes.
