Remote Audio Production for Live Streaming: Setup and Tips

Build a reliable stream mix by setting levels at the source, checking audio in OBS, and choosing only the interface routing and filters your setup needs.

For a reliable live-stream mix, set levels at the microphone or audio interface first, monitor the signal at the source and in OBS, and keep the final output below digital clipping. A USB microphone is enough for many single-speaker streams; add an interface or DAW routing only when you need more inputs, direct monitoring, or a separate music mix.

Choose a signal path that fits the stream

Start with the sources viewers need to hear: usually a microphone, game or application audio, and perhaps music, alerts, or a DAW return. Keep each source distinct in OBS when you need to balance it independently.

Workflow When it fits Trade-offs
USB microphone connected directly to the computer One speaker and a small number of audio sources. Simple to set up, but offers fewer separate hardware inputs and routing options.
XLR microphone connected to a USB audio interface You need an XLR or instrument input, interface controls, or direct monitoring. Adds hardware, cabling, and routing choices. An XLR microphone does not automatically improve every room or voice.
DAW audio routed to OBS through interface loopback A music-production session or other DAW audio must join the stream mix. Convenient where supported, but configuration depends on the interface, operating system, and software.
Two-interface routing A specific alternative when loopback is unavailable; PreSonus documents this for Studio One on Windows. Requires extra hardware and cabling. It is not a universal setup requirement.

An interface is useful when you need XLR or instrument inputs, multiple inputs and outputs, direct monitoring, or loopback routing. If a USB microphone already meets your needs, adding an interface may only add complexity. See Ableton’s overview of audio interface functions.

Connect and select the right inputs in OBS

  1. Connect the microphone. For a USB microphone, connect it to the computer. For an interface setup, connect the microphone to the intended physical input and connect the interface to the computer.
  2. Add the input in OBS. In the scene where it is needed, use Sources → + → Audio Input Capture, then select the microphone or interface input. Focusrite documents this workflow for its interfaces in its OBS setup guide.
  3. Center a single interface microphone. If one microphone is connected to a Focusrite interface, open OBS’s Advanced Audio Properties and check Mono for that source. This centers the signal instead of leaving it on only one stereo side, as described in the Focusrite guide.
  4. Keep music or DAW audio separate when useful. If you need to balance the microphone and DAW mix independently, route the DAW audio as its own source rather than treating it as part of the microphone feed.

Route DAW audio without duplicating it

When a DAW mix must reach OBS, check whether your interface provides loopback routing. PreSonus describes routing a virtual stereo output from Studio One to OBS while capturing the microphone as a separate source. This is a vendor-specific Windows workflow, not a general requirement for all interfaces or DAWs; follow the instructions for your own equipment and software in the PreSonus Studio One and OBS guide.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If loopback is unavailable, the same guide describes routing the interface’s main outputs into a secondary interface with a pair of TRS cables. This adds hardware and cabling, so use it only if your setup requires that route. After connecting sources, check that the same DAW or microphone signal is not arriving through both a direct source and desktop capture; duplication can make the mix louder or sound out of phase.

Set levels from the source outward

Adjust the microphone or device level before relying on software faders. OBS’s instruction is: “Always start at the device in question.” See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.

  1. Set the device level. Speak or play at a normal level, then include the loudest expected moments. Adjust the microphone or interface gain so the source is clear without overloading it.
  2. Check OBS’s meter. Confirm that the intended source responds and that its level remains controlled during both ordinary and loud passages.
  3. Listen at the source and in OBS. Use the device’s headphone or monitor output if available, then use OBS audio monitoring to check what has made it into the application. Monitoring headphones can help reveal noise, distortion, or an absent channel.
  4. Record and review a representative test. Capture normal speech, music or game audio, and the loudest moments you expect. Listen back before streaming, rather than judging only from meters.

OBS describes 0 dBFS as the digital ceiling: audio at or above it in the final recording or stream can distort. Keep the final mix below that ceiling. The technical explanation is in OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Add OBS filters only to fix a listening problem

Filters change the sound; they are not a substitute for a well-set source level. Add one at a time, then test ordinary and quiet speech as well as loud moments.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Compressor: can reduce louder peaks. OBS says it is typically placed near the beginning of a filter chain. Its sidechain option can also lower desktop audio under a microphone signal. Details: OBS Compressor Filter.
  • Expander: can reduce low-level sound more smoothly than a gate. If its threshold is too high, it can cut off words, so listen carefully to quiet speech while adjusting it. Details: OBS Expander Filter.

There is no universal filter setting established here: the useful adjustment depends on the source and the sound you are trying to correct.

Rehearse the whole mix before going live

  • Check every viewer-facing source: microphone, game or application audio, music, alerts, and any DAW return.
  • Confirm a single microphone through an interface is centered when appropriate.
  • Listen for duplicated feeds, missing sources, unwanted noise, or audio that is difficult to understand at ordinary listening volume.
  • Make a test recording with the complete scene and listen back before relying on it live.

Troubleshooting common audio problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No microphone signal in OBS OBS is listening to the wrong input, or the microphone is connected to a different interface input than expected. Verify the physical connection and the selected Audio Input Capture device. Speak while watching the corresponding OBS meter.
Voice is heard on only one side A single interface input is being treated as one side of a stereo source. For a single Focusrite interface microphone, check Mono in OBS Advanced Audio Properties.
Speech or music distorts The source may be overdriven, or the final digital mix may reach the 0 dBFS ceiling. Reduce the level at the originating device first, then check OBS and review a test recording.
Words disappear between phrases An expander threshold may be too aggressive. Lower or otherwise adjust the threshold while testing quiet and normal speech; remove the filter if it worsens intelligibility.
Desktop or DAW audio sounds doubled The same signal may be entering OBS through a direct route and desktop capture. Trace the sources and disable the redundant route, then rehearse the complete mix again.
DAW audio does not reach OBS Loopback routing may not be configured or supported in the selected setup. Check the interface and DAW routing instructions. The PreSonus guide’s two-interface method is specific to Studio One on Windows and needs a secondary interface and TRS cables.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different option from a remote audio-production setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not broadcast a live camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
