To set up an RTMP live stream, prepare a live broadcast on your platform, copy its ingest/server URL and private stream key into an encoder such as OBS Studio, configure video and audio for the platform and your connection, then test the full setup before going live. For YouTube, use RTMPS when your encoder supports it.

What you need before you start

RTMP is the connection method that sends audio and video from an encoder to a streaming platform. It is only one part of a working broadcast: the destination must be ready to receive the stream, the encoder needs the correct endpoint and credentials, and your sources, output settings, and network must all work together.

  • A streaming destination account with live broadcasting available.
  • An encoder such as OBS Studio.
  • The destination’s current server or ingest URL and stream key.
  • A configured scene with the video and audio sources you want to broadcast.
  • An upload connection and computer capable of handling the chosen output settings.

A webcam, capture card, or microphone may be useful, but none is required just to stream a desktop or game. OBS can combine sources such as a screen or game capture with optional camera, capture-card, media, and audio inputs. See the OBS Sources Guide.

Set up the live broadcast and get its connection details

  1. Open your destination’s live workflow. Create or select the broadcast in the platform dashboard. The platform supplies the endpoint and authorization details, so do not assume one universal server URL works for every service.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that destination or broadcast. The URL tells the encoder where to send the stream; the key authorizes it and associates it with the destination. Twitch describes the stream key as the encoder’s authorization key in its stream key FAQ.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not show it on stream, include it in a screenshot, or share it in public. If it is exposed, reset or replace it through the platform’s live settings and update the encoder with the new key.
  4. Choose the protocol specified by the destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP. Follow the platform’s current endpoint and protocol instructions rather than copying a URL or port from a different platform. See YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.

Connect OBS Studio to the destination

OBS offers two setup routes: select a built-in platform service when one is available, or enter a custom server URL and key. A built-in service is convenient; a custom server is useful when the destination provides a specific non-default endpoint. OBS documents the service, server, and key fields in its overview guide.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open OBS Studio and go to Settings → Stream.
  2. Choose the destination service from the Service menu if OBS provides it. If not, select the custom-server option and enter the server URL from the platform.
  3. Paste the matching stream key into the Stream Key field. Check that the URL and key came from the same destination setup; do not substitute a key from another account or event.
  4. Apply the settings. Keep the key out of screen captures and overlays.

If you are streaming to YouTube, select an RTMPS endpoint when the platform and encoder offer it. Google notes that connection timeouts or SSL errors can result from an incorrect server name, port, or SSL configuration, including an attempt to use cleartext RTMP where RTMPS is expected. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Build and check your stream scene

  1. Add the picture source. In OBS, add a game or display capture for gameplay or a desktop, a window capture for one application, or a video capture source for a compatible camera or capture device. OBS explains capture-device options in its Video Capture Sources guide.
  2. Add audio sources. Select the appropriate desktop/system audio and microphone devices. Speak or play audio and confirm the OBS audio meters move before broadcasting.
  3. Check the scene layout. Confirm the game or screen is visible, overlays do not cover essential content, and the audio is not muted or routed to the wrong device.

For a webcam, OBS’s webcam FAQ covers adding and troubleshooting a Video Capture Source. A webcam is optional; a screen-only game stream does not need one.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every destination and connection. The platform’s current encoder recommendations, available upload bandwidth, encoder performance, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect the choice. OBS notes that bitrate should reflect both upload speed and destination constraints in its overview guide.

  1. Start with the destination’s current encoder guidance. For YouTube, consult its recommended live encoder settings for applicable resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe guidance. Avoid treating an example value as universal advice or assuming another platform uses the same limits.
  2. Set the output resolution and frame rate in OBS under Settings → Video, choosing values your computer can render and your connection can sustain.
  3. Set streaming output and encoder options under Settings → Output. Match the destination’s current recommendations for video and audio encoding, bitrate, and keyframes.
  4. Leave upload headroom. Do not plan to consume all of the connection’s available upload capacity with the stream; other network activity and fluctuations can interrupt delivery.
  5. Check the encoder load as well as the connection. If OBS reports encoding overload, reduce output demands or use an encoder the computer can handle. Resolution, FPS, encoder choice, and scene complexity affect CPU requirements; basic system requirements do not guarantee smooth streaming. See OBS system requirements.

Test the complete stream before going live

  1. Start a short test broadcast or local recording in OBS.
  2. Check the destination’s preview or connection status to confirm it is receiving the stream.
  3. Verify the picture, game audio, microphone, overlays, and synchronization.
  4. Watch OBS for dropped-frame or encoder warnings, and check the platform’s health indicators if available.
  5. Correct problems and run another test before starting the public broadcast.

OBS recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first stream; its Quick Start Guide also walks through adding sources and checking audio meters.

Troubleshoot common RTMP setup problems

Symptom Likely causes What to check
OBS will not connect or the platform shows no preview The destination is not ready to receive the stream; the URL and key do not match; the key was reset; or the protocol, port, or SSL setting is wrong. Confirm the live broadcast is prepared, recopy its current URL and key, and check the destination’s required protocol and port. For YouTube RTMPS, verify the server name and SSL configuration using Google’s RTMPS guidance.
Video appears, but audio is missing The wrong desktop or microphone device is selected, or a source is muted. Check the selected devices and mute state in OBS, then confirm the audio meters respond before restarting the test. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
Stream stutters or drops frames Network upload instability, encoding overload, or output demands beyond the computer’s capacity. Determine whether OBS reports dropped frames or encoding overload. Reduce output demands or run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as appropriate, and check computer performance and upload capacity. See OBS system requirements.
Camera or external video is absent The device is unsupported on the current OS path, the wrong device is selected, or its resolution or frame rate is mismatched. Choose the correct source and device settings, and verify device compatibility in OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide.
