What Is a WebRTC Server and When Do You Need One?

A WebRTC server may coordinate setup, relay traffic, or route and process media. Learn which components a real-time app actually needs and when.

A “WebRTC server” is not one required component. It is a broad term for services that help a WebRTC application set up connections, get through restrictive networks, or route and process media. A simple call may send media directly between participants, but it still needs signaling and may need a TURN relay. Group calls, broadcasts, and server-side media features often call for an SFU or MCU.

What WebRTC means—and what a server does

The W3C defines WebRTC as browser APIs for exchanging real-time media and application data with another compatible browser or device. The specification does not require all media to pass through a central server. (W3C WebRTC Recommendation.)

In practice, people use “WebRTC server” to mean several different things. The key is to identify the job you need done: coordinating a session, helping endpoints find a network path, relaying traffic, or distributing and processing media.

Which WebRTC component does what?

Signaling: coordinating the connection

Before two endpoints can exchange media, an application must get session descriptions and ICE candidates from one endpoint to the other. That exchange is called signaling. WebRTC does not prescribe one signaling protocol; an application commonly uses its own signaling service, often through a persistent connection. Signaling coordinates setup but does not necessarily carry the media. The WebRTC project’s architecture overview leaves session-management choices to the application developer. ICE and STUN: finding a viable path

ICE gathers possible network addresses, then tests candidate pairs to find a route between endpoints. STUN can help an endpoint discover the address that it appears to have on the public internet. These tools help establish connectivity; they do not provide conference rooms, subscriptions, or media mixing. (RFC 8445.)

TURN: relaying when a direct route fails

If network address translation or firewall rules prevent a usable direct route, TURN can allocate a relayed address and carry the traffic. TURN is a fallback connectivity relay, not an SFU and not a conferencing feature. Relaying can improve reachability, but it consumes relay bandwidth and may add path length. RFC 8445 notes that some deployments may not need STUN or TURN on every network and that TURN can be costly.

WebRTC browsers must support TURN for cases such as endpoint-dependent NAT mappings. They must also support TURN over TCP and TLS over TCP for networks that block UDP, according to RFC 8835. For a production service, plan for a reliable TURN fallback and monitor how often it is used instead of assuming all calls connect directly—or that all calls are relayed.

SFU: forwarding selected media tracks

An SFU (Selective Forwarding Unit) receives media from publishers and forwards selected tracks to subscribers without mixing the underlying audio or video. A participant may upload a stream once to the SFU, which can then distribute tracks to the participants who need them. Clients can select streams or layers, supporting flexible layouts and independent tracks. The trade-off is that an SFU carries substantial network traffic, and subscribers may receive several streams. (mediasoup overview.)

MCU: mixing or compositing media

An MCU (Multipoint Conferencing Unit) processes incoming media to produce mixed audio or a composite video output. This can reduce the number of streams each endpoint receives and suit a fixed layout, but it puts more processing work on the server and gives clients less independent control over tracks and layouts. (LiveKit SFU documentation.)

Do you need a server for WebRTC?

You do not necessarily need a media server. For a simple two-person call, media can travel peer to peer when ICE finds a suitable direct path. You still need a way to exchange signaling information, and some users will need TURN when their networks block direct connectivity. Direct media is possible, not guaranteed.

A server becomes important when the product needs reliable relaying, group distribution, selective subscriptions, server-side processing, operational control, or a particular client experience. Participant count matters, but it is not a universal cutoff: device capacity, uplink and downlink, network conditions, media features, latency goals, privacy needs, and operating capacity all affect the design.

Choose a starting architecture by use case

Situation Likely starting point What to weigh
Two endpoints and a simple call, with no server-side media features Peer-to-peer media with signaling and ICE; provide TURN as a fallback Connection success across user networks, relay use and expense, privacy, and operational needs.
A small group where each endpoint can upload to every other endpoint Mesh peer-to-peer may suit a constrained use case Each participant’s upstream and downstream load grows as peers are added. Test with target devices and networks. LiveKit describes P2P as working well for two to three peers, but that is provider guidance, not a universal threshold.
A multi-party meeting with independent tracks, selective subscriptions, or adaptable layouts SFU Forwarding capacity, participant topology, bandwidth, subscription policy, and the scaling behavior of the chosen server.
Server-side audio mixing or a composed video feed MCU or media-processing service Processing cost, latency, layout constraints, and whether clients need independent tracks.
A low-latency broadcast to many viewers SFU distribution or a hybrid media architecture Ingress and egress bandwidth, fan-out, regional distribution, and limits of a single router or node.
Enterprise or locked-down networks TURN-capable deployment; TURN-only policy if required UDP blockage, TCP/TLS fallback, relay bandwidth, credentials, and regional placement.

These are starting patterns, not fixed participant limits. No universal benchmark in the cited standards or implementation documentation sizes every deployment. Validate the selected architecture with representative codecs, resolutions, room sizes, devices, and network conditions.

Understand the practical trade-offs

  • Peer-to-peer: avoids routing media through a conferencing server when direct ICE connectivity succeeds. Restrictive NAT or firewall conditions can still require TURN.
  • TURN relay: can make calls reachable when direct paths fail, but consumes relay bandwidth and can lengthen the media path. Track relay use to understand its operational cost.
  • SFU: can spare a publisher from uploading separately to every participant and preserves separate tracks, but the server must forward substantial traffic and receivers may consume multiple streams.
  • MCU: can simplify endpoint stream handling with a mixed or composite output, but requires more server-side processing and reduces track-level flexibility.

Self-hosted or managed?

LiveKit documents both a self-hosted open-source server and LiveKit Cloud. Self-hosting leaves deployment and operations with your team; a managed service shifts some of that work to the provider. Compare current features, operational effort, regions and data residency, expected traffic, security controls, pricing, and support against your requirements. The cited documentation does not establish a price comparison.

Scaling an SFU

Scaling depends on the selected implementation and the topology of rooms and participants. mediasoup documents distribution across workers, routers, and hosts, and notes that larger broadcast scenarios may require multiple routers. That guidance is specific to mediasoup; do not treat a capacity figure or topology from one SFU as a general limit for all servers. Benchmark your chosen implementation with realistic workloads. (mediasoup scalability.)

Security is more than adding a server

WebRTC’s security architecture describes DTLS-SRTP keying for media, ICE reachability checks, and ongoing consent mechanisms. These protocol safeguards do not replace application-level authorization, secure signaling, short-lived relay credentials, abuse controls, or careful handling of logs and recordings. Adding an SFU, MCU, or TURN server by itself is not a complete security design. (RFC 8827, WebRTC Security Architecture.)

Keep WebRTC video separate from 24/7 YouTube playback

WebRTC is designed for real-time communication between endpoints, such as calls and interactive broadcasts. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded videos playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, that is a different task—not a need for a WebRTC server. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer can be off while the cloud stream runs.
