The option is available only for eligible channels and streams: YouTube documents live automatic captions as English-only and requires normal latency.
Turn on automatic captions in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- In the left menu, select Stream.
- In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Select the video language that matches the speech in your stream.
You must enable this separately for each live stream. YouTube Help says, “The automatic captions can only be turned on for individual live streams, not the entire channel.” The live automatic-caption option is documented for English, and YouTube says its rollout is ongoing, so the control may not appear on every channel. Check eligibility before you go live
YouTube lists normal latency as a requirement for live automatic captions. Low and ultra-low latency streams are not supported; some mobile streams may also be affected. If you need the lowest possible delay for audience interaction, weigh that against the possibility that built-in live captions will not be available.

Improve recognition and test the stream
Automatic captions depend on YouTube recognizing the speech in the live audio. YouTube lists poor audio, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages spoken at once among reasons captions may not appear. Match the selected language to the speech, make voices clear and audible, and reduce people talking over one another where possible. No microphone or setting guarantees accurate recognition; check captions while live and correct mistakes where YouTube allows.
Before the event, rehearse with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then check stream health. A short private or unlisted test can help you confirm that the caption control is enabled and the audio is reaching YouTube. If built-in automatic captions are unavailable or unsuitable
YouTube’s live caption requirements describe two more involved alternatives for creators with compatible caption equipment, software, or an established encoder workflow:
- Embedded captions: Configure the stream for embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and select embedded captions in the encoder. The standard allows up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one embedded caption track.
- Caption ingestion: Use supported caption software and a caption ingestion URL. YouTube’s requirements page says this workflow requires adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in advanced settings.
These routes are not simply another toggle for automatic speech recognition: they require compatible caption output and additional configuration. Check YouTube’s current requirements before choosing one: YouTube Help: Live caption requirements.

Live captions and replay captions are separate
Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. YouTube generates captions for the replay through its separate video-on-demand process, and those captions may differ from the live captions. Check the replay later and review or correct the available VOD captions separately. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning.
Troubleshoot missing live captions
- The caption option is missing: The feature may not have rolled out to your channel. YouTube’s rollout is ongoing; check the current Studio stream controls and help guidance.
- The stream is low or ultra-low latency: Switch to normal latency if live automatic captions are essential, then test before the event.
- The wrong language is selected: Choose the language that matches the speech. YouTube documents live automatic captions as English-only.
- Speech is hard to hear or recognize: Improve the audio reaching the encoder, reduce background noise where practical, and speak clearly. Poor sound can prevent captions from appearing or make them inaccurate.
- People speak at the same time or switch languages: Reduce overlap and avoid simultaneous speech in multiple languages where possible.
- Captions appear but contain errors: Automatic recognition is not guaranteed to be exact. Review the live captions and, separately, the captions generated for the replay.
