Streaming is changing music in two different ways: on-demand audio has become the biggest source of recorded-music revenue, while livestream video gives artists another way to perform and connect with fans. The first shift is measured in a large global market; the second offers new formats, but the available evidence does not show that livestream concerts reliably replace in-person shows or increase an artist’s income.
Two kinds of streaming, two different parts of the industry
On-demand music streaming lets listeners play recordings from a catalogue, usually through a subscription or an ad-supported service. Its revenue figures concern recorded music: the sale and licensing of recordings, not concert tickets or livestream performances.
A livestream concert is a time-bound video performance. It may be free, sponsored or ticketed, and can include direct interaction with viewers. It is a performance format, not the same product or revenue stream as access to recorded tracks. Keeping those categories separate is essential when judging what streaming has changed.
On-demand streaming now dominates recorded-music revenue
IFPI reported that global recorded-music trade revenues reached US$29.6 billion in 2024, up 4.8% from 2023. Streaming generated US$20.4 billion, or 69.0% of that total. These are worldwide recorded-music figures, not estimates of livestream concert income or total artist earnings.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Global recorded-music trade revenue, 2024 | US$29.6 billion; up 4.8% year on year | Recorded music worldwide, as reported by IFPI in 2025 |
| Streaming share of global recorded-music revenue, 2024 | US$20.4 billion; 69.0% | Streaming’s share of the recorded-music total, as reported by IFPI in 2025 |
| Paid subscription streaming revenue growth, 2024 | 9.5% | Year-on-year growth reported by IFPI in 2025 |
| Ad-supported streaming-format revenue growth, 2024 | 1.2% | Year-on-year growth reported by IFPI in 2025 |
| Paid subscription-account users, end of 2024 | 752 million | Global industry figure reported by IFPI |
The scale shows a structural change in how recorded music earns revenue: streaming is no longer a side channel. It does not mean every artist earns more. Aggregate revenue says nothing by itself about an individual artist’s share, audience, costs, contract terms or take-home income.

Access to a catalogue can shape listening
Streaming makes large catalogues readily available without a separate purchase for each recording. Services may also offer higher-quality audio, music video, synced lyrics and recommendation features. Those conveniences affect not just how people access music but, potentially, what they hear.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2022 market-study executive summary put the change this way: “Streaming has changed not only how we listen to music but what we listen to because for the first time all music, both old and new, is readily available in one place at no additional cost.” This is the regulator’s analysis, not a claim that every listener behaves the same way.

The CMA also compared inflation-adjusted UK recorded-music revenue: £0.8 billion in 2015 and £1.1 billion in 2021, still below the £1.9 billion peak in 2001. Those figures describe the UK and those specific years; they should not be mistaken for a global revenue trend.

Social video is part of discovery, but correlation is not proof of cause
Music discovery now also happens through short-form and social video, where a song can circulate as part of a clip, trend or creator’s post. TikTok’s 2025 announcement of a Music Impact Report, commissioned with Luminate and covering 2024, said artists whose TikTok engagement was more correlated with streaming volumes experienced higher on-demand streaming growth over the year.

That is an association described in a platform-commissioned report. It does not establish that TikTok activity alone caused streaming growth, nor does it prove that every artist will gain listeners or revenue by posting there.
Music discovery can also connect to in-person events. Spotify’s 2026 Loud & Clear article says the service had driven $1 billion in gross concert ticket sales for artists by the first half of 2025. This is Spotify’s own reported attribution for ticket sales across its service. It is not livestream-concert revenue, and it does not isolate an effect caused by livestreaming.

Livestream concerts add a performance and fan-contact format
During the pandemic, when venues were shut and audiences could not gather, livestreams gave artists another way to perform. TIME’s 2021 reporting described ticketed events, sponsored shows and growing use of streaming platforms and production technology. Some artists discussed keeping online communities as in-person performances returned.
These examples show the kinds of formats artists used and the ways some tried to maintain contact with fans. They are historical reporting from the pandemic period, not evidence of today’s market size, typical earnings or long-term audience results. A livestream may make a performance accessible to people who cannot attend a venue, but the sources available here do not establish how often it leads to new ticket sales or replaces a concert.

| Question | On-demand audio streaming | Livestream concert |
|---|---|---|
| What is being offered? | Access to recorded tracks from a catalogue | A time-bound video performance |
| How can it earn money? | Subscription and ad-supported recorded-music revenue | May be free, sponsored or ticketed |
| How does the audience experience it? | Listeners choose recordings and when to play them | Viewers join a performance as it happens; interaction may be part of the event |
| What does the cited evidence measure? | Global recorded-music revenues and paid subscription accounts | Historical examples of formats and fan contact; no comparable current income or audience measure is established |
The available figures do not compare these formats on equal terms. Recorded-music revenue, livestream ticket sales, artist receipts and downstream in-person ticket sales are different measures; a rise in one cannot be treated as proof of a rise in another.

What artists should take from the shift
The clearest industry-wide result is the scale of recorded-music streaming. Livestream video has broadened the ways artists can perform and maintain contact with audiences, but its financial and audience effects depend on the artist, format and context. Before treating a stream as a business result, distinguish the outcome being measured:
- For recorded music, look at listening and the applicable subscription or ad-supported revenue arrangements.
- For a livestream, separate viewer reach and engagement from ticket revenue, sponsorship and production costs.
- For a claimed live-event effect, distinguish ticket sales attributed by a platform from evidence that a livestream caused those sales.
