How Much Internet Speed Do You Need to Live Stream?

The upload speed you need depends on platform, codec, resolution and frame rate. Match bitrate guidance, leave headroom and test your stream before going live.

For a livestream, upload speed matters most: your connection must reliably send the stream’s bitrate, with extra capacity left over for network fluctuations and other devices. The right target depends on your platform, resolution, frame rate and encoder. Use the platform’s bitrate guidance, check your actual upload speed under realistic conditions, then test the stream before going live.

Start with upload speed, not download speed

A broadcaster sends video to a platform, so the important measure is available upload capacity. A plan advertised mainly by its download speed does not tell you whether its upload is sufficient. Viewers receive the stream, so their relevant measure is download speed.

There is no single internet-speed number that guarantees a stable livestream. The selected encoder bitrate is a starting point; real-world stability also depends on whether your connection can sustain that rate while other network traffic and normal variation are present.

Use the bitrate for your platform and settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives the following recommended ingestion bitrates. These are stream settings, not universal broadband-plan requirements. Higher resolution and frame rate generally call for a higher bitrate.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Video setting YouTube H.264 YouTube AV1 or H.265
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps 15 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 24 Mbps
4K30 42 Mbps 30 Mbps
4K60 50 Mbps 35 Mbps

For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p60. If your available upload is inconsistent, choose a lower bitrate or quality that your connection can sustain rather than treating the table as a target your broadband plan must barely meet. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Bitrate recommendations are platform-specific. Check the destination platform’s current encoder guidance for your chosen codec and settings; one platform’s figure should not be assumed to apply to another.

Leave upload headroom

Your connection needs room above the configured stream bitrate. Twitch’s FAQ gives a general practice of allowing upload speed equal to the stream bitrate plus 30%; its example says a 6 Mbps stream may require at least 8 Mbps upload. Twitch also notes that other devices using upload bandwidth affect what remains for the stream. This is guidance, not a guarantee that a connection at that threshold will stay stable. See Twitch’s How Do I Stream FAQ.

As a practical check, compare the selected bitrate with the upload capacity you can actually use while streaming. If other people or devices share the connection, they may consume some of that capacity. A speed-test result is only a measurement at that moment, not proof of sustained upload or healthy stream delivery.

Measure and test before going live

  1. Choose the destination and video settings. Set the platform, codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to use, then look up that combination in the platform’s current encoder guidance.
  2. Measure upload under realistic conditions. Run a speed test while your usual household devices and network activity are present. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.
  3. Compare available upload with the stream bitrate. Leave headroom for variation and other traffic. If the connection is close to the bitrate or fluctuates, lower the bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again.
  4. Run a test stream before the event. Check the platform’s stream-health indicators and watch for interruptions or quality problems while using the intended settings. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream.

A test and a speed check help reveal problems, but neither guarantees future performance. Monitor stream health when live and adjust settings if the connection cannot sustain them. YouTube’s guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

If you are watching rather than broadcasting

For viewers, download speed is the relevant direction: it carries the video to your device. Twitch lists 3–6 Mbps or higher for viewing 720p60 and 7–12 Mbps or higher for viewing 1080p60. Those are viewer download figures, not broadcaster upload requirements. See Twitch’s FAQ and Twitch playback troubleshooting.

Common speed and stream problems

  • The advertised plan speed looks high, but the stream struggles: advertised download speed may not reflect available upload. Check upload directly and compare it with the stream bitrate.
  • The test speed is high, but the stream still drops frames or becomes unstable: a one-time test does not establish sustained performance. Test with household traffic active, leave bitrate headroom, and monitor the platform’s stream health.
  • Problems start when another person or device uses the network: competing upload traffic can reduce capacity left for the stream. Twitch specifically notes that other devices using upload bandwidth affect availability.
  • The stream works at a lower quality but not the preferred setting: the higher setting may require a bitrate your connection cannot reliably sustain. Reduce the bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
  • You are applying one platform’s bitrate to another: encoder recommendations differ. Consult the destination platform’s current guidance rather than assuming the YouTube or Twitch figure is universal.
