They serve different workflows, so there is no evidence-based universal winner. The comparison below draws on the vendors’ feature and plan pages, not hands-on testing.

Which one should you choose?
Choose StreamYard for guests and live production
StreamYard is the closest fit when you want a browser-based studio for a presenter-led show, guest interview, branded live production, or multistreaming. Its plan page lists Full HD 1080p and multistreaming to three destinations on Core; Advanced adds 4K local recording and multistreaming to eight destinations. Plan features, prices, and promotional terms can change, so check the current plan page for the offer and limits that apply to you.
Choose OBS Studio for configurable desktop capture
OBS Studio is free and open source. It is designed for configurable local recording and live streaming, with scenes assembled from sources such as windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. Transitions, audio filters, hotkeys, and plugins provide additional control. That flexibility suits creators who want to configure their own capture and production workflow; it also means the setup is yours to manage. The official page does not give a universal computer-performance threshold or a single maximum resolution, so test your intended workload on your own system rather than assuming a particular machine will handle it.

Choose Loom for short, shareable explanations
Loom is aimed at asynchronous screen-and-camera videos that can be shared for feedback or team collaboration. Its plan comparison lists Starter recordings of up to five minutes per video and up to 720p; paid tiers list unlimited recording length and up to 4K. The page also describes features such as a camera bubble, system audio, transcripts or captions, and team video tools. Confirm the current plan names and limits on Loom’s pricing page, since plan details may vary by region, billing, or product-page updates.
Recording tracks and what you get afterward
StreamYard: separate local files versus the mixed program
StreamYard’s local recording feature can produce separate audio and video files for participants, as well as files for screen shares and other shared media. These individual files are distinct from the cloud-mixed program output, which includes the participants and branding. Local files do not carry the brand overlays in the same way as the mixed output.

Enable local recording before the session starts: StreamYard says files cannot be reconstructed afterward if the feature was off. Uploads depend partly on network conditions, and guests should remain in the studio until their files finish uploading. The vendor’s help page also distinguishes local recording from live-stream recording. On the Free plan, local recording for the Recording feature is limited to two hours per month and is not available for live streams on that plan; paid tiers list unlimited local recording. OBS Studio: configure the sources you need
OBS’s scene-and-source model is suited to building a local capture around the material you need, such as a game window, webcam, text, or browser window. Its official description lists the available classes of controls, but does not specify a universal multi-track participant workflow or promise a specific recording result for every system. Plan to configure and check your scenes, audio, and recording output before an important session.

Loom: prioritize sharing and feedback
Loom’s reviewed plan page describes screen-and-camera recording and sharing features, including transcripts or captions and team-oriented tools. It does not establish a comparable per-participant multi-track workflow to StreamYard’s local files. If your edit depends on separate speaker tracks, verify the exact file and editing workflow you need before choosing.
Compare limits before you commit
- Duration and resolution: Loom Starter lists a five-minute per-video limit and up to 720p, while paid tiers list unlimited length and up to 4K. StreamYard’s plan page lists 1080p on Core and 4K local recordings on Advanced. OBS’s reviewed official page does not specify a single maximum resolution.
- Distribution: StreamYard’s plans emphasize live production and multistreaming. OBS also supports live streaming. Loom’s reviewed plan comparison focuses on asynchronous recording and sharing.
- Separate participant files: StreamYard documents separate participant audio/video and shared-media files, with the setup and upload caveats above. The reviewed Loom page does not document an equivalent workflow; OBS describes configurable local capture rather than a hosted guest studio.
- Cost model: OBS is free and open source. StreamYard has a Free plan plus paid Core and Advanced plans; its prices can change with promotions, renewal terms, and custom offers. Loom has a limited Starter plan and paid subscription tiers. Check the vendors’ live plan pages for current charges and limits.
Can you combine them?
Possibly, if the jobs are genuinely different—for example, using OBS for configurable capture and a separate service for sharing and collaboration. That is an inference from their distinct feature sets, not a tested integration recommendation. Check whether your chosen tools exchange files and fit your editing process before adding another subscription or setup step.
