To stream in 4K on YouTube, send a 2160p signal from an encoder using a supported codec, choose the bitrate YouTube recommends for that codec and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream with headroom. YouTube’s 2026 live-ingest recommendations are 30 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 4K/30 fps, and 35 Mbps at 4K/60 fps; for H.264, they are 42 Mbps and 50 Mbps, respectively. These are live-stream figures, not recommendations for uploading a finished video.
4K YouTube Live settings at a glance
Use the live-ingest recommendations below as your encoder’s video bitrate target. YouTube describes these as recommendations, not independent performance measurements. The figures are from YouTube Help pages accessed October 3, 2026. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance
| Incoming format | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p / 4K at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For a first stream or an important broadcast, target the recommended rather than minimum bitrate if your encoder and connection can sustain it. Do not use YouTube’s separate 4K video-upload bitrate table to configure a live encoder: those values apply to uploaded files, not live ingest.
Choose 30 fps or 60 fps
Choose the frame rate that suits the content and that your encoder can maintain reliably. Fast gameplay and camera movement can benefit from 60 fps; slower-paced shows may be well served by 30 fps. YouTube’s recommended 4K bitrate is higher at 60 fps for both codec groups, so include that extra capacity in your upload and encoding plans.

H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Confirm that both your encoder and your chosen workflow support the codec at 2160p and the frame rate you intend to use. At the same resolution and frame rate, YouTube lists a higher recommended bitrate for H.264 than for AV1 or H.265; it does not establish one codec as universally best for every encoder or viewer.

For HDR, YouTube’s cited settings guidance names H.265/HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For SDR, the advanced guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR; it specifies 10-bit HDR for HDR. Match the encoder’s color settings to the program rather than selecting HDR unless the full production chain supports it. YouTube’s live encoder settings
Connection, keyframes, and scan settings
- Protocol: Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends the encrypted version of RTMP.
- Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: Set two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Picture format: Use progressive scan and square pixels.
Encoder interfaces use different names for these controls. Look for output or streaming settings for resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, keyframe interval, and server protocol. Use your encoder’s documented controls rather than assuming a particular menu path or preset.

What upload speed do you need to stream 4K on YouTube?
Your sustained upload capacity—not download speed—must cover the chosen stream bitrate, plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. For a single stream, that means budgeting at least the video bitrate plus the audio bitrate, with the additional room for variation. If you send both primary and backup feeds, count both: YouTube’s guidance expresses the calculation as “primary + backup + 20%.” Shared network use can reduce the capacity available to the stream. YouTube streaming tips
Use the speed test to check outbound capacity and run it under conditions similar to your broadcast. A high one-time result is not proof of a stable connection: interruptions can break a live stream. Where possible, reduce competing uploads and downloads during the event and use a reliable local connection. Ethernet may help with local consistency, but it cannot provide more upstream bandwidth than your internet service or shared network has available.

Do you need special 4K equipment?
You need an encoder that can send your chosen 2160p resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. YouTube says an encoder can be computer software or standalone hardware; its workflow supports gameplay, external audio/video devices, and more advanced multi-camera production. YouTube does not specify a universal computer, graphics card, camera, or encoder model requirement. YouTube’s encoder workflow
- A capture card is relevant when your workflow needs to capture gameplay or another external device; it is not required for every 4K stream.
- A camera is needed only if your program uses one. A 4K camera is not a universal requirement for streaming 4K content from another source.
- Compare software and hardware encoders by their supported resolution, frame rate, codec, stability, and fit with your existing capture setup. YouTube’s encoder list is a compatibility reference, not an independent product test or endorsement.
Set up a 4K YouTube live stream
- Confirm live-stream eligibility early. Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until broadcast time. YouTube live-streaming requirements
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its stream URL and key into your encoder’s server and stream-key fields. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. Manage YouTube live stream settings
- Configure encoder output. Select 2160p and 30 or 60 fps, choose a codec supported by both your encoder and YouTube, and set the matching recommended bitrate from the table above. Prefer RTMPS, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds).
- Check bandwidth and production settings. Confirm that sustained upload capacity covers the stream’s total bitrate and 20% headroom, plus any backup feed. Match progressive scan, square pixels, and the appropriate SDR or HDR color settings.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check the preview, sound, resolution, frame rate, dropped frames, and stream-health warnings. Continue watching stream health once live. YouTube’s live encoder testing guidance
Latency at 4K
YouTube says its low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 4K/2160p. At that resolution, the stream is set to normal latency and optimized for quality. Plan audience interaction accordingly rather than expecting the low-latency setting to be available. YouTube live encoder settings

Troubleshoot common 4K streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health warns of insufficient bandwidth or frames drop | Upload capacity is below the combined stream load, fluctuates, or is shared by other traffic. | Check outbound speed and stability during a representative test; reduce competing network use; confirm the stream bitrate plus 20% headroom and any backup feed fit the available upload. |
| YouTube receives a different resolution or frame rate | The encoder is outputting a different mode, or automatic detection selected a different input format. | Check encoder output and the Live Control Room preview. If you need to force a mode, configure a custom stream key with manual resolution settings. |
| The stream connects but does not match the chosen bitrate or has unstable output | Encoder output, codec support, or rate-control settings may not match the intended configuration. | Confirm the selected codec is supported by the encoder and YouTube, use CBR, and set the bitrate for the selected codec and frame rate. |
| Keyframe or ingest configuration warnings appear | The keyframe interval may be too long or the connection may not use the intended ingest protocol. | Set a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds) and use RTMPS where available. |
| The stream will not start | Live streaming may not be enabled, the channel may not meet eligibility requirements, or the stream key/server details may be incorrect. | Check channel verification and restrictions, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, then verify that the key and URL match the scheduled stream. |
