YouTube supports file upload, transcript auto-sync, and manual entry; Facebook documents SRT uploads for videos on profiles and Pages. Twitch’s guide covers captions supplied during a stream, not a general way to add a new caption track to an archived broadcast.
Before you start: choose a caption format and prepare the text
Captions should convey more than spoken dialogue. Include meaningful sounds—such as music, laughter, applause, or sound effects—and identify speakers when that helps viewers follow the recording. Keep captions synchronized and avoid covering important visual information. W3C WAI explains that captions include relevant non-dialogue audio as well as speech in its Captions/Subtitles guidance.
WebVTT is the most common web caption format, and W3C also lists SRT and TTML. Use a format accepted by the platform where the replay is hosted. A timed caption file contains text paired with timing; a plain transcript has no timing and must be synchronized by a platform tool or by you.
Add captions to a YouTube recording
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the left menu.
- Select the recorded stream or video.
- Add the language if needed, then select Add under Subtitles.
- Choose a caption method:
- Upload file: Upload a caption file with text and timing. YouTube asks whether the file contains timing. Choose the option that matches your file.
- Auto-sync: Paste or upload a transcript in the same language as the speech. YouTube synchronizes it to the audio. YouTube does not recommend this for videos over an hour or recordings with poor audio quality.
- Type manually: Enter captions while playing the video. Include relevant sounds, not just dialogue.
- Save or publish the captions, then play the recording with captions enabled and correct any errors.
Auto-synchronized text still needs review. Check names, technical terms, numbers, speaker changes, and sections with music or noise. For a long recording or poor audio, use a timed file or correct captions manually rather than relying on auto-sync.

Add captions to a Facebook video
Facebook’s documented instructions cover videos uploaded to a profile or Page. They may not apply to every type of Live replay, so check the controls available on the specific video.
- Open the video after it is ready to view.
- Open the post options, select Edit post, then edit the video.
- Select Add captions, upload a SubRip (.srt) file, and save.
- For another language, repeat the process with a separate language file if the controls offer it.
See Facebook’s instructions for adding or removing captions on a video for the documented upload path.

What about a Twitch past broadcast?
Twitch’s closed captions guide describes providing captions during a stream, either embedded in the stream or sent through a broadcast encoder. It says captions can be shown when viewers replay a past broadcast if they were available in the original stream.
The guide does not document a general method to upload a separate caption file after a past broadcast has been created. If the original stream was not captioned, check the current creator controls for that broadcast rather than assuming a post-publication caption-track option exists.

Review captions for accuracy and accessibility
- Compare the captions with the recording, especially names, numbers, specialist vocabulary, overlapping speech, and noisy or music-heavy sections.
- Add meaningful non-speech audio and speaker identification when needed to understand what is happening.
- Check timing and placement so captions remain readable without obscuring important visual details.
- Distinguish captions from translated subtitles: captions convey relevant audio information, while subtitles may translate speech without describing sounds.
W3C WAI notes: “If you have live captions and you post a recording, you will probably need to do minor editing for accuracy.” Read its Understanding Success Criterion 1.2.4: Captions (Live) for related guidance.
