For most YouTube creators who want a free, flexible desktop setup, OBS Studio is the better default. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want a guided setup with built-in alerts, overlays, and widgets—and are willing to consider its optional paid Ultra plan for features such as multistreaming. Neither is a proven performance winner: there is no controlled, current comparison showing that one consistently uses fewer resources than the other.
OBS vs. Streamlabs at a glance
| What matters | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Creators who want free, open-source software and control over scenes, audio, plugins, and scripts. | Creators who want an integrated setup with themes, overlays, alerts, and widgets. |
| YouTube workflow | Live streaming and video recording. | YouTube Live streaming, recording, and screen recording. |
| Cost model | Free and open source. | Basic features are free; Ultra is optional and includes benefits such as multistreaming, VIP support, and premium overlays. Current price not stated by the cited product information. |
| Operating systems | Windows 10/11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux, according to the OBS homepage. | Windows and macOS in current Streamlabs support guidance. |
| Performance verdict | No controlled same-hardware, same-scene benchmark establishes that either program is generally lighter or faster. | |
These are both viable choices for streaming gameplay to YouTube. The practical distinction is how much control you want to configure yourself versus how much creator tooling you want integrated into the app.
Choose OBS if you want control and flexibility
OBS Studio builds a broadcast from scenes and sources. A scene can combine items such as a game or application window, images, text, browser windows, a webcam, or a capture card. You can arrange different scenes for gameplay, starting screens, breaks, and other parts of a stream, then switch among them while live.
Its audio mixer supports per-source filters, including noise gate and noise suppression. Studio Mode lets you preview changes before sending them live; Multiview displays several scene previews; hotkeys support keyboard control. Plugins and scripts extend the software for creators who want to customize their setup. Those options offer significant control, but also mean you may need to assemble and tune more of your workflow yourself. OBS’s official site describes its feature set and supported platforms.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Streamlabs Desktop if integrated tools matter more
Streamlabs Desktop combines the streaming application with features such as alerts, widgets, themes and overlays, and an app store. Its documented onboarding flow includes signing in, selecting the free Starter or paid Ultra plan, importing OBS settings if desired, choosing a theme, and adding sources such as a camera, microphone, or capture device. That guided, integrated approach may suit creators who want those tools close at hand; it is not evidence of a measured ease-of-use advantage.
Streamlabs documents streaming to YouTube Live as well as recording and screen recording. Basic features are free, while Ultra is optional; multistreaming requires Ultra. The company’s public Desktop repository describes the app as built on Electron and OBS and says the project is powered by OBS. That shared technology does not mean the two applications have identical features or behave identically. See Streamlabs’ product guidance for its current feature and setup details.

Operating-system support may decide it
If you use Linux
OBS is the clear choice between these two based on the official platform listings: OBS lists Linux, while Streamlabs’ current support guidance covers Windows and macOS. The Streamlabs repository also lists Windows and macOS, though repository wording may not reflect every release detail.
If you use Windows or macOS
Both are candidates. OBS’s homepage lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13.0 or newer. Streamlabs’ system-requirements guidance gives Windows and macOS requirements and recommends 8 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended. Those are vendor guidelines, not a promise that a particular game, scene, and output configuration will run well.

Does Streamlabs use more resources than OBS?
There is no supported universal answer. A fair performance comparison would need the same computer, game or capture source, scene complexity, output settings, and workload measured in both programs. No controlled current head-to-head benchmark under equivalent conditions is established here, so claims that OBS is always lighter—or that Streamlabs is always faster or more reliable—go beyond the evidence.
If performance is your deciding factor, test your own scene before committing. Use the same resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, sources, and game conditions in each app; check dropped frames and system load during a representative session. A simple scene and a layered scene with browser widgets or animated overlays are different workloads, so test the one you actually plan to run.

A practical decision guide for YouTube creators
- Pick OBS if you want a free, open-source default, run Linux, or expect to tune scenes, audio filters, hotkeys, plugins, or scripts.
- Pick Streamlabs Desktop if an integrated onboarding flow and built-in alerts, overlays, and widgets are worth more to you than keeping the setup minimal.
- Check the plan before relying on a feature. Streamlabs basic features are free, but multistreaming requires Ultra; confirm the current plan details before subscribing.
- Test your real workload if your computer is near its limits. Software choice alone does not establish performance; the game, scene, sources, and output settings matter too.
For a YouTube stream that should stay live around the clock
OBS and Streamlabs Desktop are desktop broadcasting tools. If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than broadcast a live gameplay session from your computer, StreamNeo is a different option: it runs the stream in the cloud so your home computer does not have to stay on.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live broadcast. Bottom line: which should you use?
Start with OBS if you want the strongest general-purpose default for a YouTube desktop stream: free, open source, broad documented platform support, and extensive control. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if its built-in creator tools and onboarding fit the way you want to work, especially if you have checked whether the features you need are free or require Ultra. For resource use, decide by testing your own scene—not by assuming either product wins on every computer.
