They affect one another, but they are not interchangeable. This glossary explains what each term means and why the platform and streaming setup matter.
What happens in a live stream?
A live stream is an audio-and-video program sent from a creator to a streaming service so viewers can watch it. In a typical setup, streaming software or a device prepares the video, an encoder sends it to the platform’s ingest endpoint, and the platform processes it for playback. The precise path depends on the software, platform, and setup.
Several settings describe different parts of that process. A larger picture or smoother motion may require more data and more encoding capacity; platform processing and network conditions also affect what viewers experience. No single setting guarantees the best-looking stream in every situation.
What does bitrate mean when streaming?
Bitrate is how much data is sent each second. Twitch defines it this way in its Inspector Glossary: “Your bitrate is the amount of data you send to Twitch when you stream.” A higher bitrate uses more of the creator’s upload bandwidth and can improve picture quality, but only up to a point. If the connection cannot sustain it, viewers may experience playback problems.

Bitrate is not a resolution setting: it describes the flow of data, not the dimensions of the picture. The bitrate that makes sense depends on factors such as resolution, frame rate, encoder, content, connection stability, platform guidance, and playback conditions.
What is the difference between bitrate and resolution?
Resolution describes the dimensions of the video picture; labels such as 720p and 1080p identify resolution classes. Bitrate describes data sent per second. Raising resolution can show more picture detail, but it generally calls for more bitrate to carry that detail. YouTube’s Live API documents inbound resolution values from 240p through 2160p, plus automatic variable detection; those documented values do not mean every account, platform, or viewer supports every option. See the YouTube Live API.
Resolution is only one part of perceived quality. A high-resolution stream can still look poor if its bitrate is inadequate or unstable, or if encoding and viewer playback conditions are limiting it. Avoid treating a resolution label as a complete quality score.

What does 60 fps mean?
Frame rate, measured in frames per second (fps), is how often the video sends a new frame. Twitch’s Inspector Glossary says, “Frame rate refers to how often animation frames are sent to Twitch.” More frames can make motion look smoother, which may be useful for fast-moving gameplay, but can also demand more encoding power and bandwidth.
Twitch describes 60 fps as typical for Full HD in its own guidance, not as a universal requirement. Its Broadcasting Guidelines advise reducing frame rate if bandwidth or encoding power is insufficient. A lower frame rate can be a sensible trade-off if the stream is unstable; the right choice depends on the platform and content.
What is an encoder, and what is a codec?
An encoder is the software or device that prepares and sends a stream to the platform. In a beginner setup, it is often the streaming program rather than a separate hardware appliance. The encoder handles settings and output; many programs choose some technical details automatically.

A codec is a method for compressing and decompressing audio or video. Twitch identifies AVC as H.264 and notes that streaming software often sets codec details automatically in its Inspector Glossary. The encoder is the tool; the codec is the compression method it uses. Which codec is appropriate depends on platform support and the streaming workflow.
What is a keyframe interval?
A keyframe interval is the spacing between keyframes in the encoded video. It is an encoder setting, but there is no one interval that should be prescribed for every service and setup. Twitch warns that changing the default can make some streams difficult to view on some devices. Check the current instructions for the platform you are streaming to and avoid changing a working default without a reason.

What is stream latency, and how is it different from stream delay?
Latency is the time between capturing the stream and a viewer receiving it. Some lag is inherent in network transmission and processing. Lower latency can help when the creator needs to interact with viewers in near-real time, but the available options depend on the platform and delivery method.

Stream delay is delay deliberately added in streaming software. It is separate from unavoidable network and processing latency; adding a software delay does not make the underlying connection faster or slower. Twitch’s Inspector Glossary distinguishes intentional delay from the broader streaming process.
What is an ingest server or ingest address?
The ingest server is the platform endpoint where the creator’s outgoing stream enters the service. An ingest address identifies that endpoint. It is on the creator-to-platform side of the broadcast, before the platform prepares the stream for viewers. Twitch uses “ingest server” for the place the stream enters its network; YouTube’s API documents primary and backup ingest addresses in its Live Streams API.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does transcoding mean?
Transcoding is platform-side conversion of an incoming stream into other output forms. YouTube says it transcodes live streams to produce formats for viewers on different devices and networks in its encoder guidance. This processing is distinct from the creator’s encoder and ingest connection. Do not assume that every broadcast or viewer is guaranteed a particular selection of quality levels.

What is an ingestion protocol?
An ingestion protocol is the method used to send the stream to a platform. Protocols can differ in codec support, suitability for different resolutions, security, and latency, so protocol choice is not just another name for bitrate or picture quality. YouTube’s protocol comparison describes HLS and DASH as higher-latency options that support advanced codecs and high-resolution streaming. Consult the destination platform’s current guidance for compatibility rather than assuming one protocol is best for every stream.
How do the settings fit together?
Think of the terms as separate controls and stages, not competing quality scores:
- Resolution: picture dimensions and detail.
- Frame rate: how often frames are sent and how smooth motion can appear.
- Bitrate: data sent each second, and therefore demand on upload bandwidth.
- Encoder and codec: the tool and compression method used to prepare the stream.
- Keyframe interval: spacing between encoded keyframes.
- Ingest and protocol: where and how the stream is sent into the platform.
- Transcoding: platform-side conversion for playback.
- Latency and stream delay: respectively, end-to-end lag and delay deliberately added in software.
When a stream has trouble, check the destination platform’s current recommendations and consider whether upload bandwidth, encoding capacity, resolution, frame rate, or compatibility is the constraint. Twitch’s broadcasting guidance specifically notes the resource demands of higher resolution and frame rate, and that mismatched settings can contribute to playback issues. Platform recommendations are platform-specific and may change.
What about 24/7 streams of uploaded videos?
A live stream can be sent from a creator’s software, while a cloud service can keep uploaded videos looping to a YouTube channel without a computer running at home. StreamNeo is one such YouTube-only service: upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uses one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. This is for uploaded videos, not going live from a camera. If you want to try it, start a free first day.
