What Microphone Should You Use for Video Streaming? 5 Types Explained

For a gaming stream, start with a USB mic for simplicity, then choose dynamic or condenser based on your room. Lavalier, headset, and shotgun mics fit different placements and movement needs.

For a solo gaming streamer, a USB microphone is often the simplest connection. Choose a dynamic mic if your room is noisy or untreated and you can place the mic close; consider a condenser in a quiet room when you want a sensitive, detailed pickup. If you move around, look at a headset or lavalier. If the mic needs to sit out of frame, a shotgun can work when it is close enough and aimed carefully. No microphone type is best for every room and setup.

First, know what “microphone type” means

The five labels people commonly compare are not all the same kind of category. Dynamic and condenser describe how a microphone converts sound. USB and XLR describe how it connects. Lavalier and shotgun describe form or intended placement, while wireless describes how audio reaches a receiver. They can overlap: a USB mic can be dynamic or condenser, and a lavalier can be wired or wireless. Keep those distinctions in mind when choosing. Sennheiser’s streaming microphone guide and RØDE’s setup guide cover these different categories.

Five microphone types and when to use them

1. Dynamic: a practical choice for a less controlled room

Dynamic microphones are commonly used for live speech and loud sources. They are often less sensitive to room reflections than condensers, which can make a close-positioned dynamic mic a reasonable starting point in an untreated room. They are not noise-cancelling: keyboard clicks, fans, and other sounds can still be picked up, especially if the mic is far away or the gain is high. Keep it close and speak toward its active side. Sennheiser and RØDE describe the common applications of dynamic microphones.

2. Condenser: detail for a quiet, controlled space

Condenser microphones are sensitive and can suit voice-over, vocals, or other sources where nuanced detail matters. That sensitivity can also mean more room sound reaches the recording, so a condenser is not automatically an upgrade in a noisy gaming room. Some condenser models need phantom power; check the specific mic’s requirements and confirm that its interface or mixer can supply it before connecting.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. USB: straightforward computer connection

USB is a connection choice, not a capsule design. A USB microphone combines the mic with electronics such as preamplification and analog-to-digital conversion, so a basic one-mic streaming setup can connect directly to a computer without a separate audio interface. USB models may be dynamic or condenser, so decide the capsule type based on your room and placement rather than assuming USB describes how it will sound. RØDE’s USB-versus-XLR guide explains the workflow difference.

4. Lavalier or headset: keep the mic with the presenter

A lavalier clips to clothing and is useful when you need hands-free speech, such as while demonstrating a game setup or moving during a presentation. A headset combines headphones and a microphone, keeping the mic near your mouth as you turn or move. Check the connector and device compatibility before buying: a mic intended for one camera, phone, or wireless receiver may not connect directly to your computer. RØDE’s guide discusses these use cases.

5. Shotgun: directional pickup for camera or boom placement

A shotgun microphone is a directional option often used on a camera or boom when the mic should remain outside the shot. Aim it at the speaker; sound arriving off-axis will be quieter, and more directional pickup calls for more precise placement. A shotgun does not make a distant voice clear in a noisy room. If possible, bring it closer, point it accurately, and manage the surrounding noise. beyerdynamic’s explanation of polar patterns describes why directionality depends on aiming and does not erase distance.

Choose by your streaming setup

Your setup A sensible starting point What to consider
Solo streamer at a desk; minimal wiring USB microphone Choose dynamic or condenser based on room noise, mic distance, and desired sensitivity. USB itself does not determine the capsule type.
Untreated or noisy room Close-positioned directional microphone; a dynamic model is a common starting point Distance, gain, and pickup pattern still affect how much background sound enters.
Quiet room; voice-over or acoustic source Condenser microphone Check power needs and whether the room is controlled enough for a sensitive mic.
Modular setup, multiple sources, or room to expand XLR microphone with an interface or mixer It takes more equipment, but individual parts can be selected or replaced separately.
Moving presenter or hands-on demonstration Lavalier or headset microphone Confirm the connector and compatibility with the device or receiver.
On-camera or boom placement, mic outside the frame Shotgun microphone Keep it close enough, aim it at the speaker, and consider wind protection where relevant.
Two people facing each other Bidirectional microphone or separate microphones A bidirectional pattern captures front and rear while reducing side pickup; room noise and available recording channels matter.

USB or XLR: choose the connection separately

USB is usually the more direct route for a single microphone connected to a computer: fewer components and less setup. XLR requires a compatible audio interface or mixer, but lets you choose and upgrade parts of the audio chain independently. Neither connection guarantees better sound. The mic itself, placement, room, gain, and compatibility all contribute. For one voice at a gaming desk, USB can be a sensible convenience; choose XLR when the modularity is worth the additional equipment. RØDE’s comparison discusses these trade-offs.

Pickup pattern and placement matter as much as the mic label

A polar pattern describes the directions from which a microphone is most sensitive. The right pattern depends on who is speaking, where the mic can go, and how much of the room you want to hear. beyerdynamic’s polar-pattern guide explains how directivity changes aiming and off-axis pickup.

  • Cardioid: Emphasizes sound from the front and attenuates sound from the rear. It is a common starting point for one speaker at a desk.
  • Omnidirectional: Picks up sound from all directions. It can suit a group or ambient recording, but also brings in more surrounding sound.
  • Bidirectional: Picks up from the front and rear while attenuating the sides. It can suit two people facing one another.
  • Supercardioid and hypercardioid: Narrower pickup areas can reduce some off-axis sound, but require more precise positioning. The amount and location of rear pickup vary by pattern.

Move the mic closer when possible, point it at the speaker, and listen for room noise before going live. Directionality can help control what the mic captures; it cannot make a distant voice intelligible by itself.

Set up the mic before your stream

  1. Check the connection and power. Connect a USB mic directly to a compatible computer port, or connect an XLR mic to a suitable interface or mixer. Check whether the microphone needs phantom power before enabling it.
  2. Position it for your format. At a desk, place the mic close enough to your mouth and speak toward its pickup side. For a lavalier, secure it on clothing; for a shotgun, aim it at the speaker and keep it as close as the shot allows.
  3. Select the right input. In your streaming or recording software, choose the microphone or interface as the audio input. If there is no signal, check the operating system’s input selection and the software’s device settings.
  4. Listen and adjust. Speak at your usual streaming volume and monitor the result. If your voice is too quiet, first check distance and input selection; raising gain can also raise room noise. If the room dominates, move closer or reduce nearby noise rather than expecting a different connector to solve it.
  5. Check for handling and breath noise. A pop filter can reduce plosive bursts such as “p” and “b”; a shock mount can reduce vibration transferred through a stand. A boom arm or stand can help keep the mic close or outside the camera frame. These accessories are useful when they solve a specific placement or noise problem, not mandatory purchases for every setup. Sennheiser’s guide describes common accessories.

Common problems and fixes

  • Your voice sounds distant or thin: Move the mic closer and speak toward its active side. For a shotgun, correct its aim before changing other settings.
  • Keyboard, fan, or room noise is prominent: Try closer placement and a directional pattern suited to one speaker. A dynamic mic may be a practical choice, but it is not immune to background sound.
  • A condenser has no signal: Check the model’s power requirements and the interface or mixer’s settings and connection.
  • Your computer or streaming app cannot find the mic: Confirm the cable and connector are compatible, then select the intended device as the input in both system and application settings.
  • Plosive pops or desk bumps are audible: Adjust the mic’s position, add a pop filter for plosives, or use a shock mount to reduce stand vibration.
  • A lavalier does not connect as expected: Verify that its connector and any receiver are compatible with the computer or recording device; physical connector fit alone does not ensure compatibility.

Or let it run in the cloud

Choosing a microphone affects the audio you capture; it does not determine how a pre-recorded video stays live on YouTube. If you also want a 24/7 YouTube stream without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, it plays your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
