Add the clock as a separate Browser Source in the OBS scene that contains your loop video, then place it above the video in the Sources list. You can load a local HTML clock file or enter a clock webpage URL; OBS renders either as part of the scene before it goes to YouTube.
What you need before you start
- An OBS scene with the video you want to loop.
- A clock page: either a local HTML file you trust or a hosted webpage URL.
- The time zone and display format you want viewers to see. If the clock supports it, choose these before going live.
OBS’s Browser Source can display a local web page or a URL. The clock is an OBS scene layer, not a special YouTube setting. [OBS Browser Source documentation]
Add the clock as a Browser Source
- Open the OBS scene containing your loop video.
- In the Sources dock, click + and choose Browser or Browser Source (the label can vary by OBS version).
- Name the source, such as “Clock,” and confirm.
- For a clock saved on your computer, enable Local file and browse to the HTML file. For a hosted clock, enter its URL in the URL field instead. Only use a local file or webpage you trust.
- Set the Browser Source Width and Height to fit the clock page. OBS’s documented default viewport is 800 × 600 pixels; that is a default, not a recommended size for every overlay. Match the dimensions to the page and your scene layout.
- Click OK. In the Sources list, move the clock above the video source. Higher sources render over lower ones.
- In the preview, drag the clock into position and resize it. Check that its text is legible and not cropped at your stream’s output size.
For a local HTML clock, a community OBS forum example describes changing the HTML and CSS to customize its appearance and timestamp. Its default format is day/month/year with a 24-hour clock and seconds; check the file and edit it only if you are comfortable doing so. [OBS forum clock example]
Make sure the video loops underneath it
Keep the clock and the video as separate sources. Select the local video’s Media Source and confirm its Loop property is enabled; that setting repeats the file when playback reaches the end. The clock remains above it as the video repeats. [OBS media sources documentation]

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If your scene uses an OBS VLC Video source for a playlist instead, OBS says VLC must be installed for that source type to appear. Its playlist has a separate Loop Playlist property. You do not need VLC just to loop one Media Source file.
Choose a clock that suits a long stream
Local HTML clock
A local file avoids relying on a third-party clock webpage remaining available during a long stream. The exact customization depends on the file: some require editing HTML or CSS to change the format, colors, or size. Inspect community files before opening them in OBS.

Hosted clock webpage
Entering a URL is quick, but the overlay depends on the webpage and its assets staying reachable. OBS supports URL pages; that does not guarantee the availability or reliability of a particular clock provider.
Clock project with a settings dock
The OBS Clock project on GitHub documents settings for 12- or 24-hour time, optional seconds, timezone, and styling. These are features of that project, not controls built into every OBS Browser Source. The project README says it was tested on OBS 30+; that is the author’s compatibility statement, not an independent test.

Why not just use a Text Source?
OBS Text Source is suitable for static text. A live clock needs a mechanism that refreshes the time, and the documented material does not establish a native dynamic-clock option in the current Text Source UI. Use a clock page or another verified live-updating method rather than assuming static text will update itself.
Check the overlay before going live
- Confirm the clock source is visible and sits above the video in Sources.
- Check the preview for cropping, contrast, legibility, and placement at the intended output resolution.
- Verify the displayed date, time format, and timezone. If the chosen clock offers timezone selection, choose an explicit zone; label it on screen if viewers need to know which zone the time represents.
- If seconds are displayed, watch long enough to confirm they change.
- Review the final OBS output or stream preview before going live.
- If using a community HTML file, inspect it and obtain it from a source you trust.
Troubleshoot common clock overlay problems
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Clock is missing | Source visibility and Browser Source viewport dimensions. | Enable the source’s visibility and make sure its width and height are greater than zero. Recheck that the local file path or URL is correct. |
| Clock is behind the video | Order in the Sources list. | Move the clock source above the video source. |
| Text is clipped or too small | Browser viewport and position in the scene. | Adjust the Browser Source width and height, then resize or reposition it in the preview. |
| Clock stops or reloads after hiding | Shutdown source when not visible and Refresh browser when scene becomes active. | Shutdown unloads the page while hidden. Turn it off if the page must remain loaded while hidden; use refresh-on-scene-activation if you want it to reload when the scene becomes active. |
| Video does not repeat | The loop setting on the video source. | For a Media Source, enable Loop. For a VLC Video playlist, check Loop Playlist. |
| Time appears to be wrong | Clock’s timezone and date/time format. | Set an explicit timezone if the selected clock supports it, and add a timezone label when needed. Not all clock pages expose the same settings. |
Do not confuse a clock with YouTube’s break overlay
YouTube’s Live Control Room can provide a Browser Source URL for a Take a Break away slate. That is a YouTube-specific break overlay workflow, not the ordinary way to add a clock to an OBS scene. For a clock that stays over your loop video, add the Browser Source in OBS as described above. [YouTube Help: Take a break during a live stream]
