Make 30 fps working copies of your 60 fps clips, then set the live encoder to output 30 fps. A 60-to-30 fps conversion halves the frame cadence; check fast motion and audio sync in the converted files before building the playlist. YouTube accepts live input up to 60 fps, but that limit does not mean a 60 fps source must be sent when your target stream is 30 fps.
Why prepare 60 fps clips for a 30 fps stream?
A 30 fps stream sends 30 frames each second. If your playlist contains 60 fps clips, prepare 30 fps copies or make sure the playback and streaming chain outputs 30 fps. This helps align the source material with the intended live cadence. YouTube’s live documentation sets ingest limits and encoder recommendations; it does not prescribe a particular editing app or frame-conversion method.
Keep your original files and work from copies. This lets you compare the converted footage with the source and redo the conversion if motion looks poor.
Convert the clips and inspect the results
- Confirm the source and target. Check that the source files are actually 60 fps, and decide that the outgoing live stream should be 30 fps. This workflow assumes a playlist feeding a live encoder or streaming service.
- Create 30 fps working copies. A straightforward conversion reduces temporal sampling from 60 to 30 frames per second. You can use video-editing or transcoding software; YouTube does not endorse a specific offline conversion algorithm.
- Review motion and timing. Watch fast gameplay, camera pans, and other quick movement for judder or missed events. Check that audio remains in sync and that the clip duration is intact. If the result is unsuitable, try a different conversion method and compare it; motion interpolation may create visual artifacts, and the best choice depends on the footage.
- Retain suitable dimensions and image properties. Match the clips to the resolution you intend to send. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live video into output formats for viewers, but that does not replace choosing appropriate settings for your own outgoing stream.
Set the YouTube live encoder to 30 fps
For a declared 30 fps output, set the encoder’s frame rate to 30 fps. The YouTube Live Streaming API also documents a variable frame-rate detection option, paired with variable resolution. If you use automatic detection, confirm the detected rate is the one you intend to send.

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations include RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Choose bitrate by both resolution and codec; the following are YouTube’s listed live-ingest recommendations, not universal offline-export targets.

For a 30 fps playlist stream, use the 30 fps row matching your chosen resolution and codec. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its documentation describes recommended ingest settings; check the linked guidance when configuring a specific encoder because platform requirements can change.

Test the playlist before going live
Test with representative material rather than a static title card alone. YouTube advises including audio and movement similar to what the stream will contain. Confirm that the encoder is sending 30 fps, the image is stable, and audio stays synchronized. Then check YouTube’s stream health for warnings; the Live Streaming API documents issues that include a frame-rate mismatch.
YouTube says it “will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” That viewer-side transcoding does not remove the need to configure and test your outgoing stream.

RTMP/RTMPS and HLS are different ingest paths
Do not apply HLS-specific packaging requirements to an RTMP/RTMPS workflow. YouTube’s HLS guide specifies M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. Follow those requirements only when you are using HLS ingest; for other workflows, use the settings documented for that path.

- Motion looks choppy after conversion: Inspect the 30 fps copy against the original, especially during fast gameplay or pans. Try another conversion approach on a short representative sample before replacing the whole playlist.
- Audio drifts or falls out of sync: Check the converted file from beginning to end and verify duration and synchronization before adding it to the playlist. Re-export from the original if the converted copy is faulty.
- YouTube reports a frame-rate mismatch: Verify the encoder is set to 30 fps, or confirm automatic detection reports the intended rate. Check that the playback chain is not switching output cadence unexpectedly.
- The stream buffers or quality is poor: Confirm the selected bitrate matches the outgoing resolution and codec in YouTube’s live table, and check the encoder’s connection and stream-health status.
- HLS ingest rejects a stream that works over RTMP: Check HLS-specific container, codec, audio, and GOP requirements rather than reusing assumptions from an RTMP/RTMPS setup.
Copyright and playlist suitability
Preparing a file at 30 fps does not grant permission to stream it. Use gameplay footage, music, overlays, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or authorization, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. A technical conversion also does not determine whether a channel complies with YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies.
