Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a sharper, steadier YouTube livestream, match your encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the upload capacity you can sustain—not the highest settings available. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Test with realistic motion and audio, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and diagnose buffering by finding out whether it affects one viewer or many.
Choose a live-stream configuration that your connection can sustain
Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate work as a set. A higher resolution or frame rate can require more bandwidth, and YouTube’s recommended bitrate changes with the chosen codec and video settings. Start with the visual quality your stream needs, then check that both the encoder and your actual outbound connection can handle it.
The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended live-stream bitrate targets; they are not upload-encoding presets. YouTube’s help pages do not show a publication date for these recommendations, so treat them as platform guidance and verify the current settings in YouTube Help when configuring a stream.
| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are targets, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will deliver clean playback. YouTube also lists minimum bitrates—for example, 1080p60 is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264—but a minimum is not the same as its recommended target. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the complete table, including other resolutions.

Pick a codec your encoder and workflow support
YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video with RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 frames per second, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); AV1 is not supported for HDR. HLS may be an option if an encoder does not support the required RTMP capabilities. Encoder menus and available combinations vary, so use the options your encoder actually supports rather than assuming every combination is available.
Keep live settings separate from video-upload settings
YouTube publishes separate recommendations for live ingestion and uploaded video encoding. Do not copy a VOD upload preset into a live encoder simply because the resolution names match. Use the live encoder page for the bitrate and stream requirements in this guide.
What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
Use YouTube’s recommended target for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate only if your available upload capacity can sustain it with headroom. YouTube says total outbound stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. If you send a primary and backup stream, count both bitrates before adding that margin.

- Measure upload capacity at the streaming location and around the time you expect to broadcast. Download speed does not establish upload capacity.
- Account for other devices and traffic sharing the connection. Their use can reduce the capacity available to your encoder.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and target bitrate that fit the capacity left after allowing for variation and the recommended headroom.
- Test the chosen settings under realistic conditions; a speed test alone does not promise that the connection will sustain the stream throughout the event.
YouTube’s streaming tips give the 20% recommendation and explain bandwidth planning. A wired connection can remove some wireless variability, but it cannot create more upload capacity or guarantee that an unreliable connection will hold.

Set the encoder’s live-stream details
Beyond the core bitrate choices, YouTube’s encoder guidance includes technical recommendations that some software exposes directly and some workflows handle automatically. Use the encoder’s supported controls; do not treat every advanced item as a required manual setting.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Use progressive scan and square pixels. YouTube’s advanced guidance also lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit video; YouTube’s guidance lists 10-bit for HDR.
- For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC.
- For AV1 at 3840×2160 or above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns.
For HDR, confirm that the entire path—from source and encoder to ingestion settings—supports the format you intend to send. Do not select HDR merely because an encoder offers a toggle.

Protect the stream key
YouTube describes a stream key as similar to a password and address: it lets the encoder send a feed YouTube can accept. Keep it private, including in screenshots and shared setup notes. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the replacement. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
How do I stop my YouTube livestream from buffering?
First establish whether buffering is isolated to one viewer or is affecting people on different networks. One person’s playback problem can be local; reports across separate networks make the stream or encoder a more likely place to investigate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing before the event and monitoring stream health, while its troubleshooting guidance uses the scope of reports to direct diagnosis.
- One viewer reports buffering: compare playback on your own device and ask how that viewer is watching. Their device or connection may be the issue.
- Several viewers on one shared network report it: investigate that audience network and its available capacity.
- Viewers on different networks report it: inspect the encoder output, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection.
If the stream already looks or sounds poor in the encoder’s own output, troubleshoot the feed before changing YouTube playback settings. Check which audio and video sources are routed to the encoder, review encoder errors, check CPU load, and inspect the local recording. Update encoder software if it is out of date. If the encoder output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection and contact your ISP if it is problematic. For a third-party encoder that cannot start, YouTube advises obtaining a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder.

Why does my YouTube stream look blurry?
A blurry stream can start with a bitrate that is too low for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and visual content, or with a source that is already soft. Compare the encoder’s actual output with YouTube’s recommended target for that exact configuration, then inspect the source and encoder feed. If the encoder’s own preview or local recording is blurry, the problem is upstream of viewer playback. If the encoder output is clear but viewers report poor quality, check stream health and the upload connection.
Do not raise bitrate past what the connection can sustain in the hope of fixing softness: exceeding available upload capacity can destabilize the stream. If the recommended target does not fit with headroom, lower the resolution or frame rate, or choose a supported codec with a lower recommended target, then test again.

- Choose a conservative resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on measured upload capacity and headroom.
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the event, as YouTube’s streaming tips advise. Test the complete scene, including motion, audio routing, overlays, and any backup path.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check stream health messages before announcing the broadcast.
- Confirm the event appears on your channel and watch page, then test playback from a viewer surface such as a phone.
- Verify that the local archive is intact and growing. If using primary-to-backup failover, test the switch before the event.
- During the broadcast, monitor audio, video, health messages, and the archive. Stop the encoder after YouTube’s event has stopped.
The two-hour and 15-minute timings are YouTube’s published operational recommendations, not guarantees that setup or stream health will be trouble-free.
Choose latency for the kind of stream you are running
Latency is the time from capture by the camera or encoder to display to viewers. Lower latency can make interaction feel quicker, but YouTube warns that it may increase playback buffering. If the broadcast is not interactive, lower latency may offer little benefit; prioritize playback resilience instead. YouTube’s improve-for-low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams, which use normal latency. See YouTube’s latency and stream settings guidance.
DVR is a separate viewer feature: it lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue from their paused point. Consider whether that behavior suits the event, rather than confusing DVR with encoder latency.
